본 연구는 1960-70년대 서부 미니멀리즘의 작업 경향에서 드러난 지역성을 통해 이들의 독자성을 고찰하고자 한다. 서부 미니멀리즘은 로스앤젤레스 화단이 주체적으로 형성한 예술 운 동이라는 의의가 있다. 서부 미니멀리즘은 동시대 뉴욕 미니멀리즘과 유사성을 공유함에도 불구 하고, 이들은 로스앤젤레스의 지역성에 기반한 독자성을 형성하였다. 이들의 독자성이 구축되는 과정은 회화 매체를 주축으로 이루어졌으며, 이는 뉴욕 미니멀리즘과 구별되는 주요한 지점이다. 이에 본 연구는 서부 미니멀리즘의 지역성이 특히 이들의 회화 작업에서 드러났음에 주목한다. 20세기 중반 기존 추상표현주의를 모방하던 로스앤젤레스 화단은 셰이프트 캔버스 및 하드 엣지 형태의 비(非)-전통적 회화 작업을 통해 서부 미니멀리즘을 발단시켰다. 이후 서부 미니멀리즘은 동시대 팝아트와 맞물려 피니쉬 페티쉬(Finish Fetish)로 이어졌다. 이때 피니쉬 페티쉬는 로스 앤젤레스 자동차 문화라는 지역성을 바탕으로 로스앤젤레스 팝아트로서의 정체성을 구축하였 다. 또한, 서부 미니멀리즘의 회화에 대한 지속적 관심은 1970년대 오브제 및 공간 작업으로 전 환한 일부 작가들의 회화로의 복귀로도 나타난다. 회화의 복귀는 3차원 형태의 작업으로 총체적 으로 전환한 뉴욕 미니멀리즘과 비교되는 서부 미니멀리즘의 특징이다.

This paper explores categorial properties of ECM and control infinitive complements in English. Paying special attention to the head-to-head relation between 1 and C in the two types of complements, it proposes that I-to-C movement is prerequisite for the selectional checking in control infinitives.

Being a rare form of sentence formation, not many languages seem to have Tag question constructions as English does (Culicover 1992:193). Besides, Cuenca (1997:4) notes that the English Tag question construction has received less and less attention in the later period of generative syntax, due to the colloquial characteristics of the construction. Of the two major distinct approaches to English Tag question constructions including Mono-clausal approaches such as Klima (1964), Arbini (1969), and den Dikkien (1995), and bi-clausal approaches such as Huddleston (1969), Culicover (1992), McCawley (1998), and Sailor (2009), the current paper proposes a Minimalist approach to Tag Question Construction using a series of Head movement, Focalization of vP, a Polarity reversing functional projection, PolP, which contains an abstract morpheme [NEG], and adjunction mechanism. Through these thorough and meticulous steps, the English Tag question construction receives a Minimalist facelift.

본 논문은 첫째, 현재 학계와 대중에 의해 통용되는 다양한 지식을 바탕으로 미니멀리즘 음악에 관한 서로 대조되는 두 가지 방식의 정의를 이끌어냈다. ‘수렴하는’ 정의는 초기 미니 멀리즘 음악을 설명하는 정치적 · 사회적 · 미학적 조건 및 음악외적 형태를 바탕으로 미 니멀리즘 음악을 특정 맥락에 위치시킨 것이다. 한편 ‘발산하는’ 정의는 변화하고 발전된 미 니멀리즘 음악을 지칭하기 위한 것으로서, 앞서 언급했던 네 가지 조건을 부분적으로만 충족 시키거나 이런 조건으로 범주화되지 않는 다양한 음악을 미니멀리즘 음악으로 정의하는 방 식이다. 둘째, 본 논문은 이런 두 가지 방식의 정의가 동시에 존재할 수 있는 원인을 고찰했다. 이 런 현상은 언어가 특정 대상을 명확하게 지시할 수 없다는 근본적인 문제에서 비롯되며, 이 단어가 지칭하는 음악이 너무도 급격하게 변해왔고, ‘미니멀’이라는 용어가 형용사이며 애매모호 한 뜻을 갖고 있다는 점에서 유발되었다. 셋째, 본 논문은 이런 두 가지 방식의 정의가 미니멀리즘 음악의 수용에 미치는 영향을 탐 구했다. 우선 미니멀리즘 음악의 의미는 수렴하고 그리고 발산하는 이분법적인 개념으로 존 재하며, 수렴이 발산을 억압하는 형태로 표상된다. 그리고 청자는 단어 내부에 작동하는 이 런 역학관계에 의해 미니멀리즘 음악을 받아들일 때 ‘수렴하는 상(像)’을 이 음악 경험 이전 에 전제한다. 다만 이런 억압의 구도가 항상 긍정적이거나 부정적인 방식으로 활용되는 것은 아니며, 사례에 따라 미니멀리즘 음악의 대중 소통가능성으로 나타나기도, 때로는 미니멀리 즘 음악에 대한 경시로 나타나기도 한다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 미니멀리즘 음악이라는 기표가 독특한 방식으로 작동하는 이러한 상황 자체가 미니멀리즘 음악 고유의 특성이라 보았다. 또한 본 논문은 위와 같은 일련의 논 의를 바탕으로 미니멀리즘 음악을 다음과 같이 정의 내렸다. 미니멀리즘 음악이란, 이 음악이 수용되는 과정에서 그 기원인 극도로 미니멀한 형태를 계속해서 상상하도록 유도되는 음 악이다. 또한 미니멀리즘 음악이란, 그 안에 포함된 특정 음악 요소를 미니멀한 무언가로 보 고자하는 욕망과 관계되어 있는 음악이다.

Kim Young-roung. 1999. A Minimalist Analysis of Weak Crossover Effects. Studies in Modern Grammar 16, 89-101. This paper aims to find out a more persuasive theory of a weak crossover principle by comparing some linguists` arguments concerning crossover phenomena. By reviewing various examples regarding weak/strong crossover and linking preferred to coindexation, this paper shows that a minimalist explanation of linking renders it possible to account for weakest crossover data without the use of null epithets, while scrutinizing the environments of the so-called weakest crossover phenomena. A linking approach can finesse weak crossover effects. This paper also notes that the constructions with psych verbs are judged more acceptable than those without psych verbs. Following Chomsky`s (1993) assumption that objects move out of the VP to Spec AgrO for case-checking at LF, we can find further evidence favoring a linking approach to weak crossover effects.

Yong-Suk. 1999. Syntax of Wh-Interrogatives: A Minimalist Perspective. Studies in Modern Grammar16, 39-88. This paper argues for two kinds of minimalist proposals concerning the constructions of wh-interrogatives: (i) the computational system of human language (C_(HL)) guarantees the same LF forms for wh-interrogatives of natural languages in accordance with the minimalist principle of poverty of interface interpretation, and (ii) the mechanism of unselective binding must be embodied as an LF principle for the scope-interpretation of wh-in-situ`s in multiple wh-interrogatives. The argumentation here proves that, for wh-interrogatives in English and Korean, the minimalist version of Kim`s (1988, 1990) LF uniformity hypothesis, proposed in this paper, must be adopted against such competing analyses as are suggested by Chomsky (1981, 1980, 1995), Huang (1982), Pesetsky (1982, 1984, 1987), Lasnik & Saito (1984), May (1985), Aoun (1985, 1986), Nishigauchi (1986), Choe (1987) and Watanabe (1992, 1993) among others, implying, from the perspective of minimalist assumptions, that the Q-.feature in C is virtually [-interpretable] at LF in all natural languages.

Kim Young-young. 1998. A Minimalist Approach to Pair-List Readings. Studies in Modern Grammar 14, 107-124. A sentence can have two interpretations based on the scope of WHs and quantifiers. QR raises ambiguity at LF. May (1985) claims the drop of the requirement that sentences be disambiguated at LF. In a sentence in which WHs and quantifiers mutually c-command each other, ambiguity arises according to the scope of WHs and quantifiers at LF. This ambiguous sentence is called pair-list readings by Homstein(1995). This paper purposes to study the configuration that supports such pair-list readings and the quantifiers that should be adjoined to IP and VP to support pair-list readings. The ECP/MBR relations concerning pair-list readings are reviewed. For pair-list readings to emerge, WHs should be functionally interpreted with a quantifierbound pronoun. I have found that the pair-list readings can be explained in terms of the Minimalist theory.
