PURPOSES : This paper presents the experimental results of tests conducted on concrete produced with air-cooled (AS) and water-cooled (WS) ground blast-furnace slag exposed to multi-deterioration environments of carbonation and scaling.
METHODS : Carbonated and uncarbonated concrete specimens were regularly monitored according to the ASTM C 672 standard to evaluate the durability of concrete exposed to both scaling and combined carbonation and scaling conditions. Additionally, mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, and surface electric resistivity, were analyzed. RESULTS : It was found that concrete specimens produced with AS and WS had a beneficial effect on the mechanical properties because of the latent hydraulic properties of the AS and WS mineral admixtures. Moreover, carbonated concrete showed good scaling resistance in comparison to uncarbonated concrete, particularly for concrete produced with AS and WS. CONCLUSIONS : The improved scaling resistance of carbonated concrete showed that AS is a suitable option for binders used in cement concrete pavements subjected to combined carbonation and scaling.
PURPOSES: The scaling of a concrete surface caused by the combined effects of frost and de-icing salts is one of the main reasons for the need to repair transportation infrastructures in cold-climate regions. This study describes the results of attempts to determine the scaling resistance of concrete incorporating mineral admixtures such as fly ash, GGBFS, and silica fume, and subjected to the actions of frost and salt.
METHODS : Conventionally, to evaluate the fundamental properties of concrete, flexural and compressive strength measurements are regularly performed. Based on the ASTM C 672 standard, concrete is subjected to 2%, 4%, and 8% CaCl2 salt solutions along with repeated sets of 50 freeze/thaw cycles, and the scaling resistance was evaluated based on the mass of the scale and a visual examination.
RESULTS : It was observed that silica fume is very effective in enhancing the scaling resistance of concrete. Meanwhile, concrete incorporating GGBFS exhibited poor resistance to scaling, especially in the first ten freeze/thaw cycles. However, fly ash concrete generally exhibited the maximum amount of damage as a result of the frost-salt attack, regardless of the concentrations of the solutions.
CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the scaling resistance of concrete is highly dependent on the type of the mineral admixture used in the concrete. Therefore, to provide a durable concrete pavement for use in cold-climate regions, the selection of a suitable binder is essential.
Recently, the concern on the deterioration of concrete pavement due to de-icing salts and its counter measurements has been increased. Especially, a scaling phenomenon of concrete is defined as a general loss of surface mortar or mortar surrounding the coarse aggregate particles on a concrete surface. This problem is typically caused by the expansion of water due to freezing and thawing cycles and the use of de-icing chemicals. This paper discusses the testing conditions of freezing-thawing and scaling resistance.

Recently, scaling of pavement concrete is becoming problem by excessive use of deicer. The current study measured durability of concrete not considering multi-deterioration using design and construction mixing used general concrete pavement.
Domestic expressway are exposed to damage of combined deterioration by excessive use of deicer and a lot of cost is required for maintaining damage structures. Therefore now is the time that durability of subsidiary concrete structures is required to enhanced in order to reduce maintenance cost of structures and to promote road safety.
In this study measured scaling resistance of concrete using the 4% CaCl2 used in the ASTM C 672 and 3% NaCl used in the MTO LS-412.
This study evluated the Freeze-thaw and scaling resistance characteristic of high early-strength low heat cement concrete. The result Freeze-thaw and scaling resistance appeared to be excellent, and using high early-strength low heat cement can be applied to concrete structures of road facilities.
As the use of de-icer on expressway is increased, scaling resistance on pavement surfaces due to freezing-thawing is decreased. In this study, scaling test methods and specifications for concrete is investigated to evaluate freezing-thawing resistance of concrete.
