World-class zoos have been recognized proponents of both animal welfare and wildlife conservation. The Korean zoos are in controversy over its existence, citing poor role performance. As one of the efforts to protect animals’ welfare and enhance wildlife conservation, leading zoos have been accredited through the inspections and evaluations. To improve the quality of Korean zoos, an accreditation standard that fits for Korean environment needs to be set. Out of various zoo accreditation standards around the world, we compared each category of all five publicly available accreditation standards; the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the United States(AZA), Canada's Accredited Zoos and Aquarium(CAZA), European Association of Zoos and Aquaria(EAZA), Zoological Association of America(ZAA), and the Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquariums(PAAZA). Based on the analysis result, we established 10 essential categories that were finally approved by the Focus group interview; animal welfare and care and management, veterinary care, conservation, education and interpretation, governing authority, staff, finance, physical facilities, safety and security, and master & strategy plan. This minimum zoo accreditation standards would enlighten the path to improve animal welfare and wildlife conservation of Korean local zoos.

동물원은 야생동물이 대중에게 전시용으로 사육되는 곳이다. 동물원의 역할과 기능은 교육, 연구, 정서적 효과·레저 오락, 자연 보호종 보존이다. 이 연구는 국내동물원의 환경풍부화 현황에 대해 알아보고 향후 방향성 제시하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 우리는 정형행동을 보이는 동물들의 환경은 열악할 것이라고 예상하였다. 연구방법은 런던동물원 협회에서 제시한 Animal Welfare Assessment Process (AWAP)를 참고하여 국내동물원 중 J동물원과 S동물원을 대상으로 환경풍부화에 관한 복지 수준을 평가하였다. 8개의 세부항목으로 이루어져 있고, 아시아코끼리, 미어캣, 표범, 반달가슴곰, 호랑이, 늑대, 다람쥐원숭이를 복지 수준 평가동물로 선정하였다. J동물원의 늑대와 반달가슴곰의 환경은 자연환경과 유사하게 조성되었지만, 나머지 동물들의 환경은 열악하였다. S동물원의 환경은 대체적으로 좋았으나 표범의 사육장의 크기는 다른 동물들에 비해 넓지 않았다. 우리의 가설과 대부분 일치하였지만, 환경이 잘 되어있어도 정형행동을 보이는 경우도 있었다. 따라서 사람 기준이 아닌 동물 기준에서 자연생태계와 최대한 비슷한 환경으로 조성해야 함을 제시한다.

Environmental enrichment is the process of providing stimulating environments for zoo animals in order for them to demonstrate their species-typical behavior, to allow them exercise control or choice over their environment, and to enhance their well-being. We are aimed to provide the available knowledges about the animal enrichment programs for zoo animals through literature review. As the results, we reviewed the design of stimulating and naturalistic enclosures, the housing etc. Enrichment includes the design of stimulating and naturalistic enclosures, the housing of appropriate social groups in zoo, and the introduction of objects, sounds, smells or other stimuli in the animal’s environment. Conclusionally, environmental enrichment is just as critical to Zoo animal welfare as nutrition and veterinary medicine. At the zoos, enrichment will be an integral part of the daily care of the species in the collection.

How do people aware of the role of the zoo, and the zoo had previously had their effects on the image, visit the zoo to determine the factors that influence the need for research on what is felt. The purpose of this study is intended for students and parents before and after the program Zoos intimacy and excitement in any situation that action says about the attributes, intimacy (emotional interest) is saying about the differences appear. 본 연구는 서울대공원 동물원에서 실시되고 있는 5개 해설프로그램의 만족도와 인식변화를 참가자 설문을 통해 분석하였다. 연구결과 프로그램의 전체 만족도는 높았으나, 이 중 참가자 태도에서 상대적으로 낮은 만족도를 보였으며 학부모가 안전성 측면에서 우려하는 정도가 높은 것으로 분석되었다. 각 프로그램 간 만족도는 프로그램별로 차이가 있는 것으로 분석되었으나 내용만족도에 있어서는 차이가 없었다. 마지막으로 각각의 동물해설 프로그램은 다소의 차이는 있으나 동물원에 대한 긍정적 인식변화에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 동물원의 환경해설 프로그램은 동물원에 대한 정보를 보다 효과적으로 전달할 수 있는 매개로 작용하는 것을 확인하였으며, 동물원의 기능이 단순한 전시기능이 아닌 교육과 연구 등 다양하게 이루어지고 있다는 것을 통해 관심 또한 증대시킬 수 있는 효과적인 수단으로 작용하는 것으로 판단되었다. 이에 동물원 환경해설 프로그램을 보다 활성화 시킬 필요성이 있었다.
