성서를 문학으로 볼 수 있느냐에 대한 논쟁이 계속되고 있지만 분명한 사실은 성서가 풍부한 문학성을 가지고 있다는 것이다. 성서는 초월적인 하나님의 세계를 비초월적인 인간의 언어로 기록하고 있는 책으로 하나님은 인간 세계에 자신을 계시하기 위해 인간의 언어와 소통 방법을 사용한다. 다시 말해, 성서에서 하나님은 실제적인 사람들을 통해 인간의 상황과 경험의 범위 안에서 인간의 언어와 표현방법을 통해 자신의 뜻과 섭리를 전달한다. 그래서 성서에는 문학에서 볼 수 있는 소통 방법과 표현법들이 수없이 나타난다. 즉, 다양한 상징 들과 직유, 은유, 평행법 등을 비롯한 다양한 수사법들과 내러티브, 서정시, 서사시, 비극, 풍자, 우화, 축혼가, 비가, 찬가, 웅변, 계시문학, 지혜문학, 서간문 등 다양한 문학 양식들이 사용된다. 따라서 성서가 전달하는 메시지를 올바르게 이해하기 위해서는 문학적인 접근으로 성서를 읽고 해석하는 것이 필수적이다. 문학적인 접근은 우리로 하여금 성서가 가진 풍부한 문학성을 감동적으로 느끼게 해주고 성서가 제공하는 경험의 세계에 생동감 있게 참여하게 함으로써 성령의 감동으로 기록된 하나님의 말씀을 효과적으로 전달해 주는 해석방법이라는 점에서 어떤 다른 접근보다 유용하고 가치를 가진다.

Despite the controversy about regarding the Bible as literature, it is evident that the Bible has excellent literacy. Therefore, for the good interpretation of the Bible it is vital to adapt the methods of literary scholarship to the reading and understanding of the Bible. The Bible includes many literary genres, literary devices, figures of speech, symbols, and images, which are used as the useful vehicle for expressing the invisible God and his providence. It also attempts to communicate with human beings through human language which acts as a mediator between God and man. Hence it is not easy to find any other way better than the literary approach when trying to seek a correct meaning of the Bible. The literary understanding of the Bible has many merits and values in that it helps us to experience the Bible vividly and enables us to grasp the deeper meaning of God’s will.
