정은궐의 󰡔홍천기󰡕는 하늘의 신비로운 섭리와 인간 삶의 현상을 종교적 관점에서 예술적으로 담아내는 작품이다. 인간은 기본적으로 하늘과 땅 사이에서 살아갈 수밖에 없는 존재이다. 또한 인간은 본능적으로 욕망과 분노의 감정을 지니고 있으며, 그것이 강렬하게 분출될 때 마가 자리하게 된다. 마는 강력한 욕망이나 분노에 자신을 내맡긴 사람을 자신의 먹잇감으로 삼는 파괴적 요소이다. 그러나 인간은 물신에만 의지하며 살아갈 수 없고, 형이상학적 가치를 추구하며 살아갈 수밖에 없는 존재이다. 소설에서 천재적 화공인 홍은오는 산수화와 초상화를 통해 여백이 드러내는 미학적 가치를 보여준다. 부친의 재능을 이어받은 홍천기 역시 여백을 중시하는 화풍으로 예술가의 길을 걸어간다. 몸 안에 마가 자리한 하람은 천문에 능한 자로 자기의 눈으로 세상을 보는 홍천기와 천생연분의 관계를 이룬다. 이들의 삶과 사랑은 여러 신령한 존재와 상호작용한다. 신령함이 부재한 인간과 사회에는 마에 자리를 내어준다. 물신숭배로 채색된 현대인 초상화의 두 눈동자에 신령함이라는 여백의 공간을 마련할 필요가 있다. 그 여백은 상상력을 바탕으로 한 예술적 승화와 영적 도약을 통해 이루어질 수 있다.

Eun-kweol JEONG’s Red Sky artistically portrays the harmony of mystic universe and human life. Mankind basically lives between earth and sky. In addition, humans are intrinsically vulnerable to desire and fury, and can be easily infatuated with an evil spirit, especially when they are exposed to the strong emotion of desire or fury. The demon activates a destructive power when it takes the body and soul of a human nature. However, the aesthetic and spiritual values are important in the lives of human beings. Eun-oh HONG, the master painter, emphasizes the importance of margin in painting. A love between Haram, the blind noble man, and Chun-gi HONG, the talented painter, is accomplished by the help of mystical spirituals of the universe. In modern society, human nature also needs an empty space for the artistic imagination and the spiritual life.
