        Propolis collected from botanical sources by honey bee, has been used as a popular natural remedies in folk medicine throughout the world. This study was conducted to assess growth inhibitory effects of ethanol extracts of propolis (EEPs) from 20 different regions in South Korea on human intestinal bacteria as well as BACE-1, AChE inhibitory, antioxidant, antiproliferative, and anti-human rhinovirus activities. Correlation coefficient (r) analysis of the biological activities of EEP samples was determined using their 50% inhibition concentration or minimal inhibitory concentration values and their polyphenol or flavonoid contents in 20 Korean EEP samples. Correlation coefficient analysis showed that total polyphenol contents may be negatively correlated with DPPH free radical scavenging activity (r = –0.872) and total flavonoid content has no correlation with the activity (r = 0.071). No direct correlation between BACE-1 inhibition, AChE inhibition, or antiproliferative activity and total polyphenol or total flavonoid content in Korean EEP samples was found.

        This study was conducted to determine the toxicity to adult Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Aphis gossypii Glover of 88 plant essential oils and six experimental spray formulations containing bitter orange or marjoram oil was examined using the vapor-phase mortality and spray bioassays. Results were compared with those of two conventional insecticides deltamethrin and dichlorvos. As judged by 24 h LC50 values, bitter orange oil (0.0212 and 0.0192 mg/cm3) was the most active material, followed by marjoram, celeryseed, and cypress oils (0.0239-0.0508 and 0.0209-0.0542 mg/cm3). These essential oils were significantly less toxic than dichlorvos, respectively. These essential oils were consistently more toxic to adult M. persicae in closed versus open containers, indicating that toxicity was achieved mainly through the action of vapor. Bitter orange oil and marjoram oil applied as 1% spray provided complete mortality toward two aphid species adults. Reasonable aphid control in greenhouses can be achieved by a spray formulation containing the 1% oil as potential contact-action fumigant.

        The longevity and fecundity of Naranga aenescens adult were investigated at temperatures of 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, and 32.5°C. Adult longevity was influenced by temperature but there was no temperature effect of fecundity. Longevity decreased with increasing temperature: it was highest at 15°C (22.2 ± 3.51 days) and lowest at 32.5°C (6.2 ± 0.32 days). Total fecundity was highest at 25°C (1693 eggs) and lowest at 15.0°C (1115 eggs). The oviposition period was longest at 20°C (8.8 ± 0.57 days) and shortest at 32.5°C (4.1 ± 0.21 days). The oviposition model presented in this study consisted of two reproductive components (total fecundity and age-specific oviposition rate) and a survival component (age-specific survival rate). The relationship between adult developmental rate and temperature was described by the Logan 6 model (r2=0.98, p<0.0001).The age-specific survival rate was explained by a exponential function (r2=0.98, p<0.00001). The age-specific cumulative oviposition rate was described by the two-parameter Weibull function (r2=0.95, p<0.00001). Temperature-dependent fecundity was estimated using the Briere-2 model (r2=0.91, p<0.0125). Daily egg production of N. aenescens in relation to adult age and temperature was estimated.

        The present study investigated the role of central GABAA and GABAB receptors in orofacial pain in rats. Experiments were conducted on Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 230 and 280 g. Intracisternal catheterization was performed for intracisternal injection, under ketamine anesthesia. Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)-induced thermal hyperalgesia and inferior alveolar nerve injury-induced mechanical allodynia were employed as orofacial pain models. Intracisternal administration of bicuculline, a GABAA receptor antagonist, produced mechanical allodynia in naive rats, but not thermal hyperalgesia. However, CGP35348, a GABAB receptor antagonist, did not show any pain behavior in naive rats. Intracisternal administration of muscimol, a GABAA receptor agonist, attenuated the thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia in rats with CFA treatment and inferior alveolar nerve injury, respectively. On the contrary, intracisternal administration of bicuculline also attenuated the mechanical allodynia in rats with inferior alveolar nerve injury. Intracisternal administration of baclofen, a GABAB receptor agonist, attenuated the thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia in rats with CFA treatment and inferior alveolar nerve injury, respectively. In contrast to GABAA receptor antagonist, intracisternal administration of CGP35348 did not affect either the thermal hyperalgesia or mechanical allodynia. Our current findings suggest that the GABAA receptor, but not the GABAB receptor, participates in pain processing under normal conditions. Intracisternal administration of GABAA receptor antagonist, but not GABAB receptor antagonist, produces paradoxical antinociception under pain conditions. These results suggest that central GABA has differential roles in the processing of orofacial pain, and the blockade of GABAA receptor provides new therapeutic targets for the treatment of chronic pain.

        The activation of glial cells in the spinal cord has been contribute to the initiation and maintenance of pain facilitation induced by peripheral inflammation and nerve injury. The present study investigated effects of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), injected subcutaneously or intracisternally, on the expression of microglia and astrocytes in rats. Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammation was employed as an orofacial chronic inflammatory pain model. A subcutaneous injection of 40 μL CFA into the vibrissa pad was performed under 3% isoflurane anesthesia in SD rats. Immunohistochemical analysis for changes in Iba1 (a microglia marker) and GFAP (an astrocyte marker), were performed 5 days after CFA injection. Subcutaneous injection of CFA produced increases in Iba1 and GFAP expression, in the ipsilateral superficial lamia I and II in the medullary dorsal horn of rats. Subcutaneous treatment with BoNT-A attenuated the up-regulation of Iba1 and GFAP expressions induced by CFA injection. Moreover, intracisternal injection of BoNT-A also attenuated the up-regulated Iba1 and GFAP expressions. These results suggest that the anti-nociceptive action of BoNT-A is mediated by modulation activation of glial cells, including microglia and astrocyte.

        α-Viniferin (AVF), a trimer of resveratrol, is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect via inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). It has been reported that up-regulated COX-2 and iNOS are expressed in colon cancer tissues of humans and rodents as well as pre-neoplastic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) of rodents. In this study, chemopreventive effects of AVF were assessed in Caco-2 cells as well as azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal tumorigenesis in mice. Anti-tumor effect of AVF with regards to apoptotic induction was assessed by TUNEL and caspase-3 expression in human colon cancer Caco-2 cells. For development of ACF, AOM was administered with to mice intraperitoneally at a dose of 10 mg/kg once a week for 3 weeks. To induce colitis-related colon cancer, mice were administered a single dose of AOM (10 mg/kg) and 2% dextran sodium sulfate in drinking water. Mice treated with 0.05 and/or 0.1 mg of AVF by gavage showed significantly reduced development of ACF and colorectal tumors. Immunofluorescence detection in Caco-2 cells showed reduced COX-2 and iNOS expression, whereas cleavage of caspase-3 and apoptotic cell numbers increased upon AVF treatment. Immunostaining showed reduced expression levels of COX-2 and iNOS expression along with increased cleaved caspase-3 expression increased upon AVF treatment. These results suggest that AVF has chemopreventive effects on colorectal cancer via anti-inflammatory potential and pro-apoptotic activity.

        본 연구는 숲의 종류에 따른 노인들의 산림치유 효과를 분석하기 위하여 실시하였다. 숲의 종류는 상수리나무숲과 편백나무숲이며 덕진노인복지회관을 이용하는 평균 72.2세의 노인 23명을 대상으로 조사하였다. 숲 체류 전과 30분 체 류 후에 기분상태평가와 뇌파를 측정하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 뇌파분석결과 상수리나무숲에서 안정 및 이완 효과의 빈도는 높았으나 효과의 정도는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았으며 편백나무숲에서는 안정 및 이완 효과의 빈도와 정도 모두 높았으며 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 숲의 유형에 따라 α파 발생량은 숲종류별로 차이가 없었으나 β파 발생량은 편백나무 숲에서 높았으며 두 숲 사이에 유의한 차이가 있었다. 기분상태 분석결과 상수리나무숲과 편백나무숲은 기분상태를 긍정적으로 개선하는데 효과가 있었으나 숲 종류별로는 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다. 생리적 지표와 심리적 지표의 상관관계를 분석한 결과 상수리나무숲에서는 뇌파 변화량과 기분상태평가 점수 사이에 관계성은 없었으나 편백나무숲에서는 절대 알파파의 변화량과 기분상태평가 총점 변화량 사이에 정적 관계가 나타났다.

        본 연구는 외국제품에 대한 중국 소비자의 제품 평가 및 태도에 영향을 미치는 대표적인 감정적 요인으로 소비 자 적대감에 관심을 가진다. 보다 구체적으로 본 연구는 중국 소비자의 미국, 일본, 그리고 한국에 대한 적대감의 라이프스타일에 따른 차이, 그리고 중국 소비자의 이들 3개국에 대한 적대감 효과의 차이를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 상해, 북경, 청도, 심양, 성도 등 중국 내 5개 주요 도시의 840명의 성인 소비자들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 중국 소비자들의 라이프스타일과 미국, 일본, 그리고 한국에 대한 적대감, 그리고 이들 국가의 전반적 제품에 대한 중국 소비자들의 제품평가 및 제품에 대한 태도에 관한 자료를 수집하였다. 연구결과, 중국 소비자의 라이프스타일은 과시적 유행추구형, 합리적 개성추구형, 전통적 보수지향형으로 나누 어졌으며, 중국 소비자들의 미국. 일본, 한국에 대한 적대감은 라이프스타일의 유형에 따라 상이하게 나타났다. 또한 중국 소비자들의 미국, 일본, 그리고 한국에 대한 적대감이 이들 국가의 전반적인 제품에 대한 평가 및 태 도에 미치는 영향도 다르게 나타났다.

        A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code is developed for predicting nonequilibrium flowfields over Mars entry probes. The numerical scheme is based on the cell-vertex finite volume method for a prismatic unstructured mesh system. Internal energy excitations and chemical reactions with finite rates are considered by introducing the two-temperature model of Park. Eight chemical species, C, N, O, CO, N2, NO, O2, and CO2, and nine chemical reactions are considered in the calculations. The developed code is verified in terms of prediction of heat flux to the body surface near the stagnation point of a Mars entry probe flying with the velocity of 6 km/s. The calculated heat flux reasonably agree with the calculated result in the past studies.

        The rice green caterpillar Naranga aenescens Moore (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of important destructive insect pests to Poaceae including rice and corn. We investigated the development periods of N. aenescens egg, larva, pupa and total immature at eight constant temperatures of 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, and 32.5°C, respectively. N. aenescens developed successfully from egg to the adult stage at all temperatures tested except 15.0°C. Developmental rate of N. aenescens increased as temperature increased from 15.0 to 30.0°C but declined at 32.5°C except pupa stage. The lower developmental threshold (LDT) and thermal constant (K) was estimated by linear regression. Higher temperature threshold (TH) and lower temperature threshold (TL) were calculated by two nonlinear functions. LDT and K from egg to adult emergence were 12.01°C and 330.84DD. The temperature range of N. aenescens from TL to TH using performance model (24.03) was wider than that from SSI model (19.77). Developmental completion of N. aenescens was described using a two-parameter Weibull distribution model. The adult emergence frequency of N. aenescens over full range of constant temperatures was simulated using developmental rate functions and Weibull function.

        본 연구는 숲의 종류별로 숲의 이미지와 만족도 및 신체적․정서적 측면의 치유지각 효과를 분석하기 위하여 실시한 것이다. 숲의 종류는 편백나무숲, 졸참나무숲, 소나무숲으로 분류하였으며 단일 임상으로 이루어진 대상지를 선정하여 평가를 진행하였다. 평가는 각 숲별로 60명의 피험자에 의해 이루어졌으며 평균연령 68.6세이다. 편백나무숲은 쾌적하고 편안하며 친밀한 이미지, 졸참나무숲은 평범하면서도 안정된 개방적인 이미지, 소나무숲은 아 름답고 쾌적하며 자연스러운 이미지로 평가되었으며 숲의 이미지구조는 정연성, 어메니티, 공간특이성, 정감성 인자로 구분된다. 숲의 만족도는 졸참나무숲이 높게 평가되었다. 편백나무숲은 정연성 인자가, 졸참나무숲은 정연성 및 공간특 이성인자가, 소나무숲은 어메니티 인자가 만족도에 영향을 미친다. 모든 숲에서 피험자들은 신체적 ․정서적 측면에서 개선이 되었다는 치유효과를 지각하고 있으며 특히 정서적 측면에서 치유지각의 효과가 높다. 신체적 치유지각은 숲 종류별로 차이가 없었으나 정서적 측면에서는 소나무숲이 가장 높았으며 다음은 졸참나무숲, 편백나무숲 순으로 숲 종 류 상이에 유의적인 차이가 있었다. 숲 만족도와 정서적 측면의 치유효과 사이에는 정적인 상관 관계가 있었다.

        We present a novel method to implement time-delayed propagation of radiation fields in cosmo- logical radiative transfer simulations. Time-delayed propagation of radiation fields requires construction of retarded-time fields by tracking the location and lifetime of radiation sources along the corresponding light-cones. Cosmological radiative transfer simulations have, until now, ignored this “light-cone effect” or implemented ray-tracing methods that are computationally demanding. We show that radiative trans- fer calculation of the time-delayed fields can be easily achieved in numerical simulations when periodic boundary conditions are used, by calculating the time-discretized retarded-time Green’s function using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method and convolving it with the source distribution. We also present a direct application of this method to the long-range radiation field of Lyman-Werner band photons, which is important in the high-redshift astrophysics with first stars.

        The brachiocephalic muscle in domestic mammals is formed as a homology of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the clavicular part of the deltoid muscle since it results from reduction of the clavicle as a clavicular intersection. The cranial insertions of the brachiocephalic muscle vary among species in domestic mammals. In the dog, the brachiocephalic muscle comprises three parts, which arise from the clavicular intersection and insert at the humerus, the dorsal cervical raphe, and the mastoid process of the temporal bone. These three parts are named the cleidobrachial muscle, the cervical part of the cleidocephalic muscle, and the mastoid part of the cleidocephalic muscle, respectively. This complexity could confuse veterinarians and complicate surgical procedures in this area. Information about the normal structure of this muscle, and any variation therein, would help to avoid such situations. During dissections of a male cross-breed dog, we found that the brachiocephalic muscle had two bellies located on the mastoid part of the cleidocephalic muscle that extended from the clavicular intersection to the wing of the atlas and the mastoid process of the temporal bone. They were innervated by the accessory nerve and the ventral branches of the second, third, and fifth cervical nerves, and they were supplied by the ascending branch of the superficial cervical artery. These bellies were considered to be a rare variation of the muscle. This is the second report of a brachiocephalic muscle variation in a dog, in which the mastoid part of the cleidocephalic muscle was made of two bellies inserted independently. Such variations should be considered during anatomical dissections and surgical procedures.

        In this paper, we have considered the modeling and analyses of categorical data. We modeled binary data with categorical predictors, using logistic regression to develop a statistical method. We found that ANOVA-type analyses often performed unsatisfactory, even when using arcsine-square-root transformations. We concluded that such methods are not appropriate, especially in cases where the fractions were close to 0 or 1. The logistic transformation of fraction data could be a promising alternative, but it is not desirable in the statistical sense. The major purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that logistic regression with an ANOVA-model like parameterization aids our understanding and provides a somewhat different, but sound, statistical background. We examined a simple real-world example to show that we can efficiently test the significance of regression parameters, look for interactions, estimate confidence intervals, and calculate the difference between the mean values of the referent and experimental subgroups. This paper demonstrates that precise confidence interval estimates can be obtained using the proposed ANOVA-model like approach. The method discussed here can be extended to any type of fraction data analysis, particularly for experimental design.

        A rod-shaped, Gram-negative chlorpyrifos-methyl (CM) degrading bacterium (designated strain KR200) was isolated from a Korean rice paddy soil and was further tested for its substrate specificity against 11 insecticides and its sensitivity against eight commercial antibiotics. Based on morphological, biochemical, and molecular characteristics, this bacterium showed greatest similarity to members of the order Flavobacteriales and was shown to be most closely related to members of the Chryseobacterium proteolyticum group. Strain KR200 hydrolyzed CM to 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) but could not degrade TCP further. The isolate was also able to degrade chlorpyrifos, dicrotophpos, monocrotophos, and carbaryl at 300 μg mL–1 but diazinon, dimethoate, and furathiocarb at 100μg mL–1. The ability to degrade CM was found to be encoded on the chromosome. Genes encoding resistance to amphotericin B, polymixin B sulfate, and tetracycline were also located on the chromosome. This bacterium merits further study as a potential biological agent for the remediation of soil, water, or crop contaminated with organophosphorus (OP) compounds because of its greater biodegradation activity and its broad specificity against a range of OP insecticides.
