In East-Asia, before modern times, writings in several countries were written in Han Character. At that time, because the world of East-Asia belonged to Han Character and Classics cultural sphere, for the political, diplomatic and cultural communication naturally they needed Han Character writing. This Han Character writing were used around nobility. The middle ages was a society for nobility, thus language of ruling activity was mainly Han Character. As a result, the lower class was neglected from Han Character writing, the language of ruling class. Until 20th century the countries in East-Asia that wrote sentences in Han Character were China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and so on. Of course, although these countries used Han Character to write, each level, contents and historic process of Han Classics are different. But there was no difference in that they had used sentences in Han Character. From the beginning of 20 century, all of east-Asia countries writing pattern and education system going different own way. However, now in the each East-Asia country, Han character and subject (old classics with Han character) education is very important. Therefore, we need to do mutual recognition about language education in Asian sphere have Han Character in common being developed newly .Also, we need to recognize that not only Han Character vocabulary but also Han Classics have a connection and exchange studies about it. I hope in this symposium, we need to the chance to understand new relation sharing 'Han Character vocabulary' in Asian sphere. We can expect scientific development through trades of various learning and education methods or theory about Han Classics and Han Character in each country. So, I suggest as follows for this exchange. 1. Holding international conference on learning and teaching of Han Characters in Asian languages regularly. Annually or biennially, holding a symposium which have principles of own expense, attending 10 or so representing each countries. 2. Carrying out common study to develop. It is hard for the moment , building a database of basic data for each countries' formal change and sentence study and developing a database of Han Classics and Han Character 3. Concluding simple treaty about international exchange among the scholars who attended to conferences. That is, it is not only symposium but exchange between department and department or department and faculty. 4. Publishing international academic journal in AHCI level which represent Han Classics and Han Character education in Asian Han Character culture sphere. In this case, it is not around certain society in certain country but is around scholars and society in Asian sphere. Fifth, holding a conference in circulation system to open and manage the homepage concerned about this. In homepage, it will offer the contents about symposium, notice and results, collecting project, VOD service about key note lecture during symposium, links of each country's society and thesis services published at international academic journal and so on. These are can be hard for the moment, if we push ahead actively, we can do them. Just, it is important we share what recognition for ourselves. Without forming a bond of sympathy, international can be stopped at one-off event. Therefore I suggest exchange with the suggestions . Of course we can't accomplish all of them at once. It can be desirable that we expects gradual development by starting from the part of them. Finally, study and exchange through this symposium doesn't stop at self-contentment but is for the development of Asia for future and peaceful bonds.
The purpose of this study is investigation of understanding levels and utilities of the earth science educational terms written by Chinese characters. Kim and Koh (2003)'s analysis of the earth science concerned vocabularies in science textbooks for 3rd to 6th grades of elementary school. In the books, earth region vocabularies were derived from 70% to 80% words of Chinese, below 10% of pure Korean, and other languages. Jeong et al.(2007) analyzed 9th grade(middle school grade of the Korea) students' understanding about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters depending on their learning style and attitudes toward science. They selected the eight students, the students were judged middle level of science. Students were divided into four groups: verbal-high attitude toward science, verbal-low attitude toward science, visual-high attitude toward science, and visual-low attitude toward science learners. Researchers had three types of questionnaires including Korean character type, picture type, and Korean and Chinese characters type to how developing the students' understanding about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters. The results of data indicated that the 9th grades students' understanding showed no significant difference by their different learning style, and yet demonstrated higher level of understanding in Korean and Chinese characters type questionnaire rather than Korean characters type only or picture type. On the other hand, the level of students’ understanding both in Korean characters type and picture type was equal. In conclusion, it seems more effective learning earth science terms written by Chinese characters when they were provided with both Korean and Chinese characters.Jeong et al.(2007) analyzed 10th grade students’ understanding level about earth science terms written in Chinese characters according to learners’ characteristic. In older to investigate the responses followed their various characteristics, first of all, proper scientific terms were selected, and then corresponding questions about them were offered as subjects, which consisted of Korean characters type, picture type, and Korean and Chinese characters type. During paper test and interview, the questions were given to fifteen students from general high school. The results of the study are as follows; Students in formal operation level and field independency answered very well and also the terms of Chinese characters type and picture type improved the students' understanding and memorization. Generally, Chinese characters have more positive influence on their learning than negative. Therefore, in general, it seems that more effective to explain the sound and meaning of terms in detail. In addition to give learners enough time to draw a picture about each terms by themselves when scientific terms are delivered to students in Chinese characters in class.Lee et al,(2002) investigated that whether 11th grades students with more knowledge of Chinese Character get higher academic adaptability in inquiry activities using the concept and understanding level of earth science terms than the students with less knowledge of Chinese Character. They analyze which relationship exist between two groups. The students with more Chinese Character knowledge show high understanding level and high corrected answer rate in inquiry questions. However, the students with little knowledge also high corrected answer rate in inquiry question, but there is only a little difference on the level of concept understanding for earth science education is linearly connected from elementary school to high school. In a prior study, researchers reported that Chinese Character learning will help understanding concept better but the lack of knowledge about Chinese Character will not be obstacle to understand the concepts in earth science, futhermore to do inquiry activities using the concept. Under the college education, however, science terms written by Chinese characters in science major tend to compare with the highschool abruptly. In order to get a complete concepts of new science terms, learning of the Chinese characters is needed. In conclusion, Chinese Characters learning will help understand new knowledge in college education and is very efficient at translation of science literatures written by foreign language without confusion.
A Chinese reader will need to memorize approximately 3000 unique logographs to cater everyday reading. These words are learned through extensive copying. Learners are taught a specific sequence that has been present for thousands of years. However, the relationship between stroke sequence and Chinese reading ability has yet to be thoroughly studied. Theoretically speaking, a reader only needs to identify the words and this could be done without learning the correct sequences. Brain imaging studies suggested that Chinese reading ability might be related to visualspatial processing in the working memory. Therefore this study aims to investigate the relationship between visualspatial memory based on Chinese related stimulus and to find out if stroke sequence is really needed in reading Chinese. 40 grade 1 students were recruited from a primary school in Beijing. Subjects are tested for their Nonverbal IQ, reading performance, stroke and constituent memory span, as well as their stroke sequence accuracy on familiar and unfamiliar words. Results indicated that stroke span is significantly correlated with reading performance, and is also predictive for stroke sequence scores. Constituent span however has nothing to do with reading performance but are predictive of the stroke sequence accuracy for unfamiliar words. Stroke sequence, on the other hand, is robustly correlated with reading performance. The overall stroke sequence accuracy is a significant predictor in reading performance. Stroke sequence accuracy for familiar words is also a significant predictor in stroke sequence accuracy for unfamiliar words. In short, stroke span proves to be more important than constituent span. Also, accurate stroke sequence is a very important factor affecting Chinese reading ability.
