Dongseok Kim & Yong-Ha Kim. 1999. Cost of Merge and Move. Studies in Modern Grammar 17, 33-66. In this paper we argue against Chomsky`s (1995, 1998) assumption that Merge preempts Move, and claim that Merge and Move have the same status with respect to economy. We assume, following Collins (1997), that Merge involves copy and Merge just like Move, and the unique difference is that Move involves copying an already introduced element, whereas Merge involves copying a new element from the lexicon. Under this assumption, Numeration is unnecessary and Procrastinate is eliminated in favor of local economy. On the basis of Object Shift and multiple specifier constructions in Korean, we have shown that Merge as well as Move apply as Last Resort, and that whether to apply Merge or Move is contingent on the properties of the features that must be satisfied at each stage of a derivation. As a principle to decide between them, we have proposed Narrow Domain Principle and proved it successfully works on a wide range of relevant constructions.

Yong-Suk. 1999. Syntax of Wh-Interrogatives: A Minimalist Perspective. Studies in Modern Grammar16, 39-88. This paper argues for two kinds of minimalist proposals concerning the constructions of wh-interrogatives: (i) the computational system of human language (C_(HL)) guarantees the same LF forms for wh-interrogatives of natural languages in accordance with the minimalist principle of poverty of interface interpretation, and (ii) the mechanism of unselective binding must be embodied as an LF principle for the scope-interpretation of wh-in-situ`s in multiple wh-interrogatives. The argumentation here proves that, for wh-interrogatives in English and Korean, the minimalist version of Kim`s (1988, 1990) LF uniformity hypothesis, proposed in this paper, must be adopted against such competing analyses as are suggested by Chomsky (1981, 1980, 1995), Huang (1982), Pesetsky (1982, 1984, 1987), Lasnik & Saito (1984), May (1985), Aoun (1985, 1986), Nishigauchi (1986), Choe (1987) and Watanabe (1992, 1993) among others, implying, from the perspective of minimalist assumptions, that the Q-.feature in C is virtually [-interpretable] at LF in all natural languages.

Kim, Yong-Ha. 1999. Scrambling and Economy of Representation. Studies in Modern Grammar 16, 1-38. Scrambling is known to have mixed properties of A-movement and A´-movement. One of the defining characteristics of A-scrambling is that scrambled elements can bind anaphors in their c-command domain. On the other hand, A´-scrambling has the undoing property, which can be best attributed to the reconstniction effect and hence is a typical A`-movement property. Work in the minimalist program generally explains these dual properties of scrambling by assuming that there are two kinds of scrambling in the fast place. However, it is very dubious to treat seemingly identical operations as different ones. Thus, it seems reasonable to take a unified approach to scrambling if there is any possible way to do. In this paper, we suggest a unified way of explaining the dual properties of scrambling in the framework of Chomsky`s (1995) minimalist program. We regards scrambling as a case of MSC. The unique feature of scrambling, under our approach, is that its identity as A-movement or A´-movement is not determined a priori. Rather, scrambled elements are only affected by deleted strong features of functional heads. What is predicted from our approach is that scrambling can take place only when all necessary feature-checking is completed.

Four cast iron pipe sections containing 3 styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) gaskets (1 joint and 2 end caps) were filled with water and maintained at approximately 40 psi internal pressure. The pipe sections were placed inside 16 gallon drums filled with initially clean sand. Three of the tanks were subsequently contaminated with gasoline, gasoline spiked with pyrene and naphthalene, and toluene. The forth tank served as a control. The water inside each pipe was monitored over time for organic chemical contamination. Permeation of organic chemicals into the water inside the pipe systems was found to occur in all 3 contaminated pipe systems after approximately 100 days as measured organic chemicals concentrations were significantly above those in the uncontaminated cell. Flushing experiments in which the water inside the contaminated pipes was replaced with initially clean water showed that organic chemical concentrations inside the pipe rapidly (12 days) reached their preflushing levels.

Yong-Suk Kim. 1998. Some A´-Dependencies in Korean. Studies in Modern Grammatical Theories 12, 53-82. This paper concerns some A´-dependency constructions involving null operator movement in Korean. This paper argues that the analysis of null operator movement accompanied with the strong binding condition should be adopted for topicalization of Korean, and then illustrates that this kind of analysis can be extended to some other conshructions such as relativization and null object constructions in Korean but not scrambling. In addition, I will make an attempt to explore how these constructions and the computation of null operator movement can be adapted to the recent framework of Chomsky`s (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996) minimalist program.
