Surface contaminants may attach to surfaces or objects in the radiation controlled area to cause radiation exposure, or spread out to the general environment by person and object exiting the radiation workplace. Accordingly, in radiological safety control, surface contamination monitoring is one of the important factors in workplace monitoring. When obtaining the measurement results for the monitoring, the results are accompanied by uncertainty since measurements contain numerous errors. Accordingly, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published the ISO 7503 series which is comprehensive and detailed guidelines on the measurement and evaluation of surface contamination. ISO 7503-3 especially presents a mathematical model for the contamination measurement and provide calculation guidelines on measurement uncertainty evaluation, decision threshold and detection limit. This paper is focused on reevaluating and comparing the surface contamination monitoring method applied to radiation safety management practice and its results based on the measurement and evaluation method set by the International Organization for Standardization. The evaluation was performed in accordance with ISO 7503, and the current reporting method for measurement results was compared with the method recommended in ISO 11929 publication.

In south Korea, most of uranium deposits are distributed in the Ogcheon belt, which is one of two late Precambrian to Paleozoic fold belts (the Imjingang and Ogcheon belts). A study site of the Ogcheon metamorphic belt (OMB) in Hoenam-myun, Boeun-gun was selected for the natural analogue study by preliminary site investigation for several candidate study sites. Three boreholes were drilled in the site and some rock cores and groundwater samples were taken from the boreholes. Various analytical studies for the samples are now being performed. Thus, in this study, various basic characteristics of the study site such as occurrence, geological, mineralogical, and chemical properties were investigated for a future study. Base rocks containing uranium in the OMB are usually black slate and coaly slate. Coaly slate usually shows a higher content of uranium and larger grain size of uranium than black slate. Uranium minerals found in the OMB are uraninite, uranothorite, brannerite, ekanite, coffinite, francevillite, uranophane, autunite, and torbernite depending on the base rock types. Uranothorite is abundant in black slate whereas uraninite is mostly abundant in coaly slate. Chemical compositions of the solid and groundwater samples from the study site were also analyzed by using ICP-MS/OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) and XRF (X-ray Fluorescence). This will contribute to determine uranium minerals in the solid samples and uranium speciation in the groundwater. The results of this study will contribute to performing future natural analogue studies in domestic uranium deposits and provide basic information and knowledge for understanding long-term geochemical behaviors of radionuclides in a high-level radioactive repository.

Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is the main source of high-level radioactive wastes (HLWs), which contains approximately 96% of uranium (U). For the safe disposal of the HLWs, the SNF is packed in canisters of cast iron and copper, and then is emplaced within 500 m of host rock surrounded by compacted bentonite clay buffer for at least 100,000 years. However, in case of the failure of the multi-barrier disposal system, U might be migrated through the rock fractures and groundwater, eventually, it could reach to the biosphere. Since the dissolved U interacts with indigenous bacteria under natural and engineered environments over the long storage periods of geologic disposal, it is important to understand the characteristics of U-microbe interactions under the geochemical conditions. In particular, a few of bacteria, i.e., sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), are able to reduce soluble U(VI) into insoluble U(IV) under anaerobic conditions by using their metabolisms, resulting in the immobilization of U. In this study, the aqueous U(VI) removal performance and change in bacterial community in response to the indigenous bacteria were investigated to understand the interactions of U-microbe under anaerobic conditions. Three different indigenous bacteria obtained from different depths of granitic groundwater (S1: 44–60 m, S2: 92–116 m, and S3: 234–244 m) were used for the reduction of U(VI)aq. After the anaerobic reaction of 24 weeks, the changes in bacterial community structure in response to the seeding indigenous bacteria were observed by high-throughput 16S rDNA gene sequencing analysis. The highest uranium removal efficiency of 57.8% was obtained in S3 sample, and followed by S2 (43.1%) and S1 (37.7%). Interestingly, SRB capable of reducing U(VI) greatly increased from 4.8% to 44.1% in S3 sample. Among the SRB identified, Thermodesulfovibrio yellowstonii played a key role on the removal of U(VI)aq. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that the dspacing of precipitates observed in this study was identical with that of uraninite (UO2). This study presents the potential of U(VI)aq removal by indigenous bacteria under deep geological environment.

Time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy were used to study the interaction of U(VI) and natural organic matters (NOMs) in groundwater. Various types of groundwaters (DB-1, DB-3 from KURT site and OB-1, OB-3 from a U deposit in Ogcheon metamorphic belt) were used as samples. Pulsed Nd-YAG laser at 266 nm (Continuum Minilite) was used as the light source of TRLFS. The laser pulse energy of 1.0 mJ was fixed for all measurements. The luminescence spectrum was recorded using a gated intensified chargecoupled device (Andor, DH-720/18U03 iStar 720D) attached to the spectrograph (Andor, SR-303i). EEM spectra were measured using a spectrofluorometer (Horiba Scientific, Aqualog) equipped with a 150 W ozone-free xenon arc lamp. Excitation spectra were recorded by scanning the excitation wavelength from 200 to 500 nm. Emission spectra were measured using a CCD in the wavelength range of 242–823 nm. In the case of the recently collected DB-1 samples, it was observed that the U and NOM quantities decreased compared to the samples collected before 2016. For some DB-1 samples, the amount of dissolved organic carbon indicating the presence of NOM was significantly reduced, and changes consistent with this phenomenon were observed in the EEM spectrum. The time-resolved luminescence characteristics (peak wavelengths and lifetime) of U(VI) in the DB-1 samples agree well with those of Ca2UO2(CO3)3(aq). This U(VI) species remains stable, even in samples taken five years ago. The estimated amounts of U and NOM from the spectroscopic data of DB-3, OB-1, and OB-3 samples are relatively low compared to DB-1 samples. When a known amount of U(VI) was mixed in each groundwater, the time-resolved luminescence spectrum exhibited a characteristic spectral shape different from the expected luminescence intensity. This phenomenon is presumed to be due to the interaction between U(VI) and NOM in groundwater. The results of this study suggest that the chemical speciation of NOM as well as U(VI) is required to understand U behavior in groundwater.

In Korea, borated stainless steel (BSS) is used as spent fuel pool (SFP) storage rack to maintain nuclear criticality of spent fuels. As number of nuclear power plants and corresponding number of spent fuels increased, density in SFP storage rack also increased. In this regard, maintain subcriticality of spent nuclear fuels was raised as an issue and BSS was selected as structural material and neutron absorber for high density storage rack. Because it is difficult to replace storage rack, corrosion resistance and neutron absorbency are required for long period. BSS is based on stainless steel 304 and it is specified in the ASTM A887-89 standard depending on the boron concentration from 304B (0.20-0.29% B) to 304B7 (1.75-2.25% B). Due to low solubility of boron in austenitic stainless steel, metallic borides such as (Fe, Cr)2B are formed as secondary phase metallic borides could make Cr depletion near it which could decrease the corrosion resistance of material. In this paper, long-term corrosion behavior of BSS and its oxide microstructures are investigated through accelerated corrosion experiment in simulated SFP condition. Because corrosion rate of austenitic stainless steel is known to be dependent on the Arrhenius equation, a function of temperature, corrosion experiment is conducted by increasing the experimental temperature. Detail microstructural analysis was conducted with scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer. After oxidation, hematite structure oxide film is formed and pitting corrosions occur on the surface of specimens. Most of pitting corrosions are found at the substrate surface because corrosion resistance of substrate, which has low Cr content, is relatively low. Also, oxidation reaction of B in the secondary phase has the lowest Gibbs free energy compared to other elements. Furthermore, oxidation of Cr has low Gibbs free energy which means that oxidation of B and Cr could be faster than other elements. Thus, the long-term corrosion might affect to boron content and the neutron absorption ability of the material.

The fundamental characteristics of groundwater colloids, such as composition, concentration, size, and stability, were analyzed using granitic groundwater samples taken from the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) site by such analytical methods as inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, field emission-transmission electron microscopy, a liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector, and dynamic light scattering technique. The results show that the KURT groundwater colloids are mainly composed of clay minerals, calcite, metal (Fe) oxide, and organic matter. The size and concentration of the groundwater colloids were 10–250 nm and 33–64 μg·L−1, respectively. These values are similar to those from other studies performed in granitic groundwater. The groundwater colloids were found to be moderately stable under the groundwater conditions of the KURT site. Consequently, the groundwater colloids in the fractured granite system of the KURT site can form stable radiocolloids and increase the mobility of radionuclides if they associate with radionuclides released from a radioactive waste repository. The results provide basic data for evaluating the effects of groundwater colloids on radionuclide migration in fractured granite rock, which is necessary for the safety assessment of a high-level radioactive waste repository.

The role of the women divers (Haenyo and their unique meeting place (Buleok)of peace to solve disputes is another feature of Jeju Peace Island that recommends it as a locus for peace action. Sammu speaks of neighbourly-ness, although the concept itself refers to three elements lacking on Jeju: The Thief, the Gate and the Beggar. Going deep into the peasant past, Jeju islanders held virtues ``diligence, thrift and interdependence”. This meant that no one was moved to become a thief, there was no need for a secure Gate and, so, the Beggar was not found either. Jeju Islander society and culture was without avarice and promoted values of independence, self-reliance and honor. Entry to a traditional Jeju compound was barred by a Jeongnang or log that showed that the homeowner was away and, so, no one crossed the threshold out of respect. All of this may sound rather negative and stern were it not for Samryeo, the “Three Treasures” in the developing heritage of Jeju peace culture, taken to be Nature (folklore, native industries), Crops of special use, such as marine products and, today, tourism; finished off with Generosity of the beauty of nature, including controls on the level of industry so as to preserve the natural blessings. Whilst in keeping with the three-part philosophy of ancient Jeju, Samryeo is a development from 1960 and more recent times, as Jeju and South Korea recovered from the Jeju Tragedy. Indeed, it is only in 2003(English edition in 2013) that the final definitive report on these disturbing events has been compiled and published. Like the Mangaian war ax, the Jeju Tragedy is a constant reminder of the need for peace and the avoidance of violence and war for harmony of civilization.”.

When we think about an idea of United Nations Tolerance Program UNTP, it is important for us to share memory with world citizens that we had 2314 veterans from 11 countries in the Busan U.N. Forces Cemetery since January of 1951. Recently, we had 13 veterans, who got buried coming from 4 Americans, 3 Hollanders, 2 Frenchmen, 2 Germans, 2 Englishmen, 1 Canadian and 1 headband after they died in their countries. (Joongang daily newspaper June 19, 2022). "I believe that creating a fifth office of the UNTP in Republic of Korea (Seoul, Busan, Kyunggi or Jeju Island), as a twin organization of the UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya, would provide a geopolitical balance to the international organization and a useful base for peace island studies in the conflict laden region of East Asia. Establishing this office in S. Korea(Seoul, Busan, Kyunggi or Jeju Island), with its unique geographical location as a hub for peace talks and environmental negotiations between Russia, North Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan, would contribute to peace and development in the region." The effect of oxidation time on the characteristics and mechanical properties of spent nuclear fuel cladding was investigated using Raman spectroscopy, tube rupture test, and tensile test. As oxidation time increased, the Raman peak associated with the tetragonal zirconium oxide phase diminished and merged with the Raman peak associated with the monoclinic zirconium oxide phase near 333 cm−1. Additionally, the other tetragonal zirconium oxide phase peak at 380 cm−1 decreased after 100 d of oxidation, whereas the zirconium monoclinic oxide peak became the dominant peak. The oxidation time had no effect on the tube rupture pressure of the oxidized zirconium alloy tube. However, the yield and tensile stresses of the oxidized nuclear fuel cladding tube decreased after 100 d of oxidation. The results of the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were represented with the in-situ Raman analysis result for the oxide characteristics generated on the cladding of spent nuclear fuel.

We assume that, even though Jeju Island ‘Peace’ Cherry Trees (1913), happened at different time and places, it connects each other as (1919) and Busan UN Forces Cemetery (1951) as an important connected diplomatic event of Provisional Government and Republic of Korea positively. Especially, it will bring a significant positive impact to Asia Community if we organize 2023 Korean Week Event: The First Korea Congress (1919) and Busan UN Forces Cemetery (1951) and suggest the invitation issues of UN Asia Headquarters to the Republic of Korea (2023) into Busan metropolitan city(Seoul, Kyunggi, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province) of Republic of Korea. We also assume Korean’s tolerance philosophy will Koreans to unite each other together if they will succeed to share spirit of tolerance from Busan UN Forces Cemetery. We have 2314 graves from 11 countries at the graveyard for UN Forces in Busan, which was built as the UN Headquarters Cemetery in January of 1951 and used as memorial space for participation in the Korean War, who had involved the War beyond their sacrifices. Recently we had 13 veterans, who got buried coming from 4 Americans, thre Hollanders, 2 Frenchmen, 2 Germans, 2 Englishmen, 1 Canadian and 1 headband after they died in their countries. Graphite is widely used as a reflector or moderator in nuclear reactors, and since it is exposed to high flux neutron irradiation, long-lived radioactive isotopes such as C-14 are formed. Therefore, quantitatively prediction of production amount is a very essential task for reliable radioactive waste management. In this study, considering nuclear reactions such as (􀝊, 􀟛) reaction by thermal neutrons and elastic scattering, various characteristics such as the rate of formation of C-14 and energy distribution of thermal neutrons according to the penetration depth from the graphite surface were numerically analyzed. The evaluation was carried out in consideration of the average energy of neutrons and reaction/collision cross-sectional area at given energy, and a comparative study was also performed when the thermal neutrons were in thermal equilibrium and when they were not. The numerically evaluated results were compared qualitatively with the experimental study, and methods to further increase the accuracy were also discussed.
