A new soybean cultivar for soy-paste, “Mansu”, was developed from the cross between ‘Suwon 192’, which was tolerant to disease, late maturing and high yielding, and ‘Suwon 196’ which was early maturing and large seed by soybean breeding team in the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) to make new variety having large seed and high yielding. A promising line, SS97213-2B-3SSD-39-1-1, was selected and designated as the name of ‘Suwon 236’. It was characterized by regional yield trials (RYT) for three years from 2004 to 2006 and released as the name of “Mansu”. It has a determinate growth habit, purple flower, grey pubescence, pale green seed coat, yellow cotyledon, large spherical seed (26.5 grams per 100 seeds). Maturity date is 4 days later than the check cultivar, Taekwang. The average yield of Mansu was 2.93 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out for three years from 2004 to 2006 which was 7 percent higher than that of the check cultivar, Taekwang.

This study was conducted to clarify the relation of the species of genus Sorbus in Korea based on multivariate analysis for the morphological characteristics and DNA polymorphism. Twenty-eight quantitative characters were assessed and analyzed by the principal component analysis and UPGMA cluster analysis. From the principal component analysis of 28 quantitative characters, three principal components (PC’s) explained the variation of inter-specific relations among the genus Sorbus. The first PC’s explained 58.95% of the variation with the Eigenvalue of 16.5, and the second and third PC’s showed the Eigenvalue of 8.3 and 3.1 and explained 88.74% and 100.0% of the variation, respectively. Especially, the first PC’s was related in order of the fruit width (FW) and length of terminal leaflet (LTL), petal length (PL), width of terminal leaflet (WTL), and diameter of winter bud (DWB). The second and third PC’s were involved in order of the No. of leaflet (NL), No. of fruit per fruiting lateral (NFL), length of upper rachis (LUR), and diameter of rachis (DR), No. of pistil (NP), respectively. Cluster analysis using them UPGMA method based on the principal components of four species of the genus Sorbus divided into two groups. Group Ⅰ comprises Sorbus commixta and S. sambucifolia var. pseudogracilis, and Group Ⅱ consists of S. amurensis and S. aucuparia. The pattern of DNA polymorphism of the 56 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers revealed that different taxa shared different sets of bands, and DNA analysis is useful for taxonomic study on the genus Sorbus.

“Ilyeop” (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton), a new cultivar for leaf vegetable, was developed from a cross between Ipdeulkkae1 and YCPL187 at the National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA, in 2001. For the cultivation of leaf vegetable perilla, the plants are grown with a spacing of 10 × 5 cm between rows and plants and all branches are removed to harvest uniform leaves from main stem, indicating that the amount of the next harvesting leaf is a important characteristic for the growth of the plant. “Ilyeop” grows vigorously and yields high quality leaf with higher amount of the next harvesting leaves composed with a check cultivar, “Ipdeulkkae1”. “Ilyeop” has five days of earlier seed maturity (Oct. 24) than that of “Ipdeulkkae1” under natural condition, less chance of frost damage is expected. The flowering date of “Ilyeop” is same with that of “Ipdeulkkae1” in winter cultivation with night break treatment.

“Bora” is a new perilla (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton) cultivar developed from a cross between Ipdeulkkae1 and YCPL199 at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA, in 2001. Purple backside leaf color is one of the most important characteristics for the high quality perilla leaf. “Bora” has purple backside leaf color in all climate condition, while a check variety, Ipdeulkkae1 has too light color during summer season or in high temperature condition. “Bora” matures at October 18th and has 79 cm of the stem length, shorter than that of Ipdeulkkae1. Although leaf yield is 11% less than that of a check variety Ipdeulkkae1, the harvested leaf number of “Bora” is similar with that of Ipdeulkkae1. The cultivar is appropriable in all area of Korea for the leaf harvesting cultivation whereas it is restricted to southern part of Korea South Gyeongsang and South Jeola provinces, for the seed harvesting cultivation.
