Kang Hui-suk. 2014. The Intervention of Linguistic Policy in Sound Changes and Novel Language: Focusing on a Sound Change from ‘o to u’ in Words used in the Seoul area. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 22(1). This study looked at the change from o to u appearing in the modern Korean language period and its developmental process in words used in the Seoul area, and how the change has been evaluated in the process of establishing normative linguistic policies such as the <Revised Collection of Standard Korean Language> and the <Standard Language Rules>. As a result of this speculation, the following was discovered: the common change from o to u in sub-dialects of the Korean language has been accepted in the process of revising the standard language to have the status of the standard language. However, the expansion of o to u which has been evaluated to have the typical character of the mid-land dialect including words used in Seoul has been evaluated negatively. As a result, it was discovered that the innovative forms of the change from o to u have the status of non-standard language. Also, this study speculated on the influence negative recognition has on the expansion of the change and the exclusive attitude the evaluation of the standard language has had on novel language by writers who came from Seoul. With the winning novels of the Lee sang Literary Award as the subjects of the study, the expansion of o to u occurred only in grammatical morphemes in the location of non-beginning words in novels published from the 1970s to the 1980s. Recently, such expansion has hardly been seen.

Yang Myung-hee, Kang Huisuk and Park Dong-geun. 2013. A Sociolinguistic Study on the name of Korean and Koreans' language attitudes toward the name: Focused on teenage high school students and their parents. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 21(3). This paper aims to compare the characteristics of name and language attitudes towards name of teenage high school students and their parents. This thesis carried out a nationwide survey and as a result drew out several important conclusions. First, the percentage of Sino-Korean name was the highest; the rate of the native name of teenage high school students is two times higher than that of their parents, and more male students had Sino-Korean name than female students. Second, the percentage of parents taking part in the naming process was 60% in parents generation, whereas the percentage of parents and grandparents respectively taking part in the naming process were similar in teenage high school students. This result indicates that grandparents became to play a bigger role in the naming process due to their socio-economic status. Third, the percentage of using the generation character(hangryeol) decreased in teenage high school students, indicating that people are not bound to traditions. Fourth, the rate of female parent who were unsatisfied with their names was the highest. It suggests that there was a social preference of a son to a daughter. Fifth, the parents replied that the most desirable namer is father, followed by naming specialist, and students replied father followed by grandparents. Sixth, the number of students who answered that fetus names are necessary was two times bigger than their parents, and it seems likely that fetus names will be popular in the future as well. Hereafter, by carrying out nationwide surveys of different age groups(their late teens and 40's or 50's), this paper intends to study how the characteristics of Korean name and Koreans' language attitudes towards it changed through different age groups. Kang Hui-suk. 2012. A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Fetus Naming and Its Diffusion. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 20(2). pp. 33-61 . This study attempted a socilinguistic analysis on the fetus naming and its diffusion as a new custom. The subjects of the study were 248 first-graders of elementary schools, 175 young children from nurseries and 423 parents who are living in Gwangju and Damyang in Jeonnam. The results are summarized as follows: First of all, the types of fetus naming and naming principles were analysed and it was discovered that most of fetus names were Korean, not Chinese, such as bokdeongi, teunteuni or ttolttori while real names were usually Chinese. Real names were made by parents or name experts in consideration of Saju or meanings of names after babies were born. However, fetus names were given by their parents in the early or middle periods of pregnancy. As a result of examining how many children had fetus names in each class, it was discovered that 43.5% of the first graders had fetus names and 76.9% of young children in nurseries had them. It shows that the custom of fetus naming is expanding very fast and such expansion was found both in urban and rural areas. When motives to give fetus names were analysed, it was discovered that parents intended to talk to their babies calling their names every day, thinking the fetus are lives with personality. They believed that when names are called frequently, the meanings of the names can be achieved. 66.5% responded that fetus names are necessary. Also, parents felt babies exist through fetus names. The names weremeans of conversation and worked to enhance friendliness and rapport between parents and their babies. The names gave helps to prenatal care as well as delivered what parents expect to the babies, enhanced rapport between parents and babies, removed anxiety of pregnancy and added happiness to their life.

This study aims to identify the origin and usage of ‘-s n’, a suffix for male title, shown in dialects of Jeollanamdo, and based on the results, to describe the aspect of differentiation of Jeonnam dialects through the suffix of ‘-s n’. This study examines the different types of ‘-s n’, its usage, the meaning in term of dialect geography and characteristic of its social and the results are summarized as follows: First, previous studies sought for the origin of ‘-s n’ from ‘S nnim’, but this study is to find its origin from grammaticalization based on the dialect type of ‘S ngwon’ like ‘S won~Sewan’. Second, the title of ‘-s n’ has diverse sub-categories such as ‘name+ last name+s n’, ‘name of the place wives come from+last name+s n’, ‘name of previous residence+last name+s n’, ‘occupation+last name+ s n’, and ‘nickname+last name+s n’ in addition to ‘last name+s n’. However, according to social and cultural features of the community the title is used, especially, whether the community is nobility village (Banchon) or civilian village, its specific usage is different. Third, as the title of ‘-s n’ exist only in the eastern part of Jeonnam, it has different aspects from that of western part. In particular, it was connected with ‘-t' k’, a suffix of female title, and the identification following one’s husband was established instead of kinship terms, which works as an important factor that made Jeonnam dialects categorized into east and west. Fourth, today, the use of the title ‘-s n’ is limited to older people, in the civilian village rather than nobility village and used by men rather than women in higher rate.

The primary purpose of this investigation is to show geographical and social variation and the direction of change of ‘Taekho’ (terms of address of household) in Jeonnam Dialects by observing types, systems, and use. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows. First, the main function of ‘Taekho’ in Jeonnam Dialects is not to designate terms of address of a household but to designate the byname of a married woman. Besides, it functions as modifiers of various kinship terms. Secondly, with a few exceptions, ‘Taekho’ in Jeonnam Dialects are divided into two types, that is, geononymy and the title of 'husband+ t’ k(떡)'. Originally, ‘Taekho’ developed in a gentry village and diffused to neighbouring commoner villages. However, the title of 'husband+t’ k(떡)' developed in a commoner village in the eastern dialects of Jeonnam. This is a principal component differentiating the dialects of Jeonnam into two subgroups. Lastly, terms of address of a household are used more frequently by the older generation. As a result, the function of ‘Taekho’ is to relatively weaken terms. Nowadays, teknonymy and fictive kinship terms of address have expanded in their range of use throughout the Jeonnam region.
