The process optimization of directed energy deposition (DED) has become imperative in the manufacture of reliable products. However, an energy-density-based approach without a sufficient powder feed rate hinders the attainment of an appropriate processing window for DED-processed materials. Optimizing the processing of DEDprocessed Ti-6Al- 4V alloys using energy per unit area (Eeff) and powder deposition density (PDDeff) as parameters helps overcome this problem in the present work. The experimental results show a lack of fusion, complete melting, and overmelting regions, which can be differentiated using energy per unit mass as a measure. Moreover, the optimized processing window (Eeff = 44~47 J/mm2 and PDDeff = 0.002~0.0025 g/mm2) is located within the complete melting region. This result shows that the Eeff and PDDeff-based processing optimization methodology is effective for estimating the properties of DED-processed materials.

Stainless steel, a type of steel used for high-temperature parts, may cause damage when exposed to high temperatures, requiring additional coatings. In particular, the Cr2O3 product layer is unstable at 1000oC and higher temperatures; therefore, it is necessary to improve the oxidation resistance. In this study, an aluminide (Fe2Al5 and FeAl3) coating layer was formed on the surface of STS 630 specimens through Al diffusion coatings from 500oC to 700oC for up to 25 h. Because the coating layers of Fe2Al5 and FeAl3 could not withstand temperatures above 1200oC, an Al2O3 coating layer is deposited on the surface through static oxidation treatment at 500oC for 10 h. To confirm the ablation resistance of the resulting coating layer, dynamic flame exposure tests were conducted at 1350oC for 5–15 min. Excellent oxidation resistance is observed in the coated base material beneath the aluminide layer. The conditions of the flame tests and coating are discussed in terms of microstructural variations.

Powder quality, including high flowability and spherical shape, determines the properties of additively manufactured products. Therefore, the cheap production of high-quality powders is critical in additive manufacturing. Radio frequency plasma treatment is an effective method to fabricate spherical powders by melting the surface of irregularly shaped powders; in the present work, mechanically milled Zr powders are spheroidized by radio frequency plasma treatment and their properties are compared with those of commercial Zircaloy-2 alloy powder. Spherical Zr particles are successfully fabricated by plasma treatment, although their flowability and impurity contents are poorer than those of the commercial Zircaloy-2 alloy powder. This result shows that radio-frequency plasma treatment with mechanically milled powders requires further research and development for manufacturing low-cost powders for additive manufacturing.

The effect of post-heat treatment on the coating characteristics and the fatigue strength of the gas flame thermally sprayed Stellite alloy coatings on carbon steel were investigated. The fatigue fracture surfaces of the heat treated samples were observed using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). For as-sprayed samples, there was considerable scattering in the fatigue life due to the presence of the pores in the coating. After the post-heat treatment to improve the microstructural characteristics of the coating layer, the fatigue strength of the specimens was greatly improved, increasing with increasing the coating thickness. For the specimens with the 0.3mm and 0.5mm thick coating, the fatigue cracks originated in the substrate region just below the interface. On the contrary, for the specimens with the 1.0mm thick coating, they nucleated at the pore within the coating, and the fatigue strength was 2.6 times higher than that of the substrate due to the high fatigue resistance of the coating.

The copper oxide nano powders were synthesized by levitational gas condensation(LGC) method, and their high heterogeneous catalytic effects of oxidation of 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4- hydroquinone (TMHQ) and catalase activity were studied. The observation of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that most of these nano powders are uniform in size, with the average particle size of 35 nm. The nano powder consists of mainly , but it is aged to CuO phase. The catalytic effect which was clarified by oxidation of TMHQ and catalase depends on the amount of cuprite phase and the particle size.

nano cubes with high catalase activity were synthesized by reduction of freshly prepared Cu in distilled water at and their catalase activities of were studied. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that most of these nanocubes were uniform in size, with the average edge length of 30 nm. Selected area electron diffraction of TEM revealed that the nanocube consisted of single crystalline , but it changed to CuO phase. The catalase activity depends on the amount of both cuprite phase and surface area.

Nanoscale Cu-Ni alloy nanopowders have been produced by a pulsed wire evaporation method in an inert gas. The effect of Cu-Ni alloy nanopowders as additives to motor oil on the tribological properties was studied at room temperature. The worn surfaces were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Cu-Ni alloy nanopowders as additives lowered coefficient of friction and wear rate. It was found that a copper containing layer on the worn surface was formed, and deposited layers of the metal cladding acted as lubricant on the worn surface, reducing the friction coefficient. It was clearly demonstrated that Cu-Ni alloy nanopowders as additives are able to restore the worn surface and to preserve the friction surfaces from wear
