        We report a facile and versatile strategy to prepare multi-dimensional nanocarbons hybridized with mesoporous SiO2. Carbon nanoplatelets (CNPs, two-dimensional structure of nanocarbons) were combined with carbon nanotubes (CNTs, onedimensional nanocarbons) to form multi-dimensional carbons (2D–1D, CNP–CNTs). The CNP–CNTs were synthesized by directly growing CNTs on CNPs. A simple solution-based process using TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) resulted in coating or hybridizing CNP–CNTs with mesoporous silica to produce CNP–CNTs@SiO2. The nanocarbons’ surface area significantly increased as the amount of TEOS increased. Electrochemical characterizations of CNP–CNTs@SiO2 as supercapactior electrodes including cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge in 3 M KOH (aq) reveal excellent-specific capacitance of 23.84 mF cm−2 at 20 mV s−1, stable charge–discharge operation, and low internal resistance. Our work demonstrates mesoporous SiO2 on nanocarbons have great potential in electrochemical energy storage.

        Quarantine Pest Research Facility (QPRF) had been built in Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for study on exotic pests at 2018. This facility was constructed to prevent effective containment for preventing accidental escape of insects. We tested a developmental and susceptibility of pesticides (Fluxametamide, FLX and Hydramethylnon, HMT) on beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua for testing containment level of QPRF. S. exigua showed 22.5 days at 28±1℃ and 26.5 days at 25±1℃ with 60±5% RH for entire life cycle. LC50 of FLX and HMT to 5th instar larvae for 24h revealed as lower than 1ppm and 100ppm, respectively. Also, there is no release of adults in QPRF and confirmed by sex pheromone trap during winter season.

        붉은불개미는 남미가 원산인 외래해충으로써 기후변화로 인한 기온 상승과 국가간 교역량의 증가를 통해 전세계적으로 서식범위를 확장해 나가고 있다. 국내에서는 붉은불개미가 2017년 9월 부산 감만항에서 처음 발견된 이후 올해까지 4차례 추가로 발견되어 국내 침입 및 정착 가능성이 점차 증가하고 있다. 곤충에서 인슐린 신호체계는 일반적으로 산란, 생장 및 발육, 대사계, 스트레스 저항성에 관여하는 것으로 널리 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 붉은불개미의 인슐린에 대한 생물학적인 기능을 이해하기 위해 인슐린 수용체(insulin receptor)의 발현을 억제한 후 나타나는 생리적 변화를 관찰하였다. 그 결과 체내빙결점(supercooling point)에 영향을 미쳐 붉은불개미의 저온생리에 영향을 준다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

        To compensate for the critical shortage of human organs for allotransplantation, xenotransplantation studies using genetically modified pigs are being performed in Korea. Two types of pigs that are used are α1,3-galactosyltransferase gene knockout (GalT KO) pigs and GalT KO+hCD46 (human complement regulatory protein) pigs. The present study measured the gestation time, birth weight, daily growth rate, and heart weight of both kinds of transgenic minipigs. The gestation period for both types of pigs was 117∼119 days. There was no difference in the body weight of GalT KO (—/+) and GalT KO (—/—) piglets, but GalT KO+hCD46 (—hCD46+/+) pigs were significantly heavier at birth than were GalT KO+hCD46 (—hCD46+/—hCD46+) pigs. During the first 10 weeks of life, the daily weight gain of GalT KO+hCD46 (—hCD46+/—CD46+) piglets, which are considered the optimal type for xenotransplantation, was 0.19 kg. The weight of hearts from GalT KO piglets up to two months of age was affected more by body weight than by age. Transgenic pigs showed no differences in gestation period or reproductive ability compared with normal pigs. These results comprise basic data that may be used in xenotransplantation studies and transgenic animal production in Korea.

        Transgenic chickens have been spotlighted as an highly potent bioreactor for their fecundity, short generation time, and eggs associated with mass production of protein. In this study, we generated transgenic chickens exhibiting oviduct specific expression of human growth hormone fused to human transferrin for oral administration. Gene of the modified growth hormone located at downstream ovalbumin promoter (∼3.6 kb) was introduced to stage X blastodermal cell employing retrovirus vector system. Several transgenic chickens were successfully generated. However, genomic analyses showed unexpected deletion within the transgene. The modification of the transgene seemed to occur during germ cell formation because the deletion was detected only from the sperm DNA of the G0 founder animal. There was no evidence of deletion in the somatic cell DNA samples of the same chicken. Consequently, same pattern of the deletion was confirmed in both somatic and germ cells of the G1 progeny.

        Periodontitis results from the activation of host immune and inflammatory defense responses to subgingival plaque bacteria, most of which are gram-negative rods with lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) in their cell walls. LPSs have been known to induce proinflammatory responses and recently it was reported also that they induce the expression of microRNAs(miRNAs) in host cells. In our current study therefore, we aimed to examine and compare the miRNA expression patterns induced by the LPSs of major periodontopathogens in the human gingival epithelial cell line, Ca9-22. The cells were treated with 1 μg/ml of E. coli (Ec) LPS or 5 μg/ml of an LPS preparations from four periodontopathogens Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) for 24 h. After small RNA extraction from the treated cells, miRNA microarray analysis was carried out and characteristic expression profiles were observed. Fn LPS most actively induced miRNAs related to inflammation, followed by Aa LPS, Pi LPS, and Ec LPS. In contrast, Pg LPS only weakly activated miRNAs related to inflammation. Among the miRNAs induced by each LPS, miR-875-3p, miR-449b, and miR-520d-3p were found to be commonly up-regulated by all five LPS preparations, although at different levels. When we further compared the miRNA expression patterns induced by each LPS, Ec LPS and Pi LPS were the most similar although Fn LPS and Aa LPS also induced a similar miRNA expression pattern. In contrast, the miRNA profile induced by Pg LPS was quite distinctive compared with the other bacteria. In conclusion, miR-875- 3p, miR-449b, and miR-520d-3p miRNAs are potential targets for the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal inflammation induced by subgingival plaque biofilms. Furthermore, the observations in our current study provide new insights into the inflammatory miRNA response to periodontitis.

        네모집날도래과의 Goerodes sinuatus (Martynov)와 바수염날도래과의 Psilotreta falcula Botosaneanu와 P. locumtenens Botosaneanu를 남한에서 처음으로 기록하였다. 사육에 의하여 Goerodes elongatus (Martynov)는 유충단계를 처음으로 밝혔고, 그간 혼동되었던 Psilotreta kisoensis Iwata 와 P. locumtenens Botosaneanu의 유충과 성충관계를 밝혔다.
