This study was conducted to evaluate the feeding value of black soldier fly pupa (BSFP) on fecal microorganism, immunoglobulinm egg quality and egg production laying hens. One hundred twenty laying hens were assigned to 4 treatments (0, 5, 7 and 10% BSFP) with 3 replicates for 8 weeks. The formulae of 4 experimental diets were modified to contain 18% CP and 2,900 kcal/kg. All the treated groups differed in feed intake, egg production, egg weight and egg mass compared to those of a control group. The egg weight and production were increased (p < 0.05) in BSFP groups compared to the control. The HDL-C was increased (p < 0.05) in BSFP groups compared to the control. The level of immunoglobulin IgG and Haugh unit were increased (p < 0.05) in BSFP groups compared to the control. These result suggested that the addition of BSFP to the layer diet could improve the egg quality and the laying performance.

Larvae black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, is beneficial because its larvae feed on organic materials derived from plants, animals and humans and promote the recycling of food waste and organic materials. Chymotrypsin serine protease is one of the main digestive proteases in the midgut of and is involved in various essential processes. In a previous study, a gene encoding a chymotrypsin-like protease, Hi-SP1, was cloned from the larvae of Hermetia illucens and characterized. The objective of this study was to compare the digestive enzyme activity with various enzymes such as papain, protease and α-chymotrypsin. And also, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the Hi-SP1 against the spoilage relate bacteria. The growth of the bacteria was inhibited in nutrient broth containing the Hi-SP1.

The invasive black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, has been paid much attention as an excellent organic matter decomposer. We conducted the nationwide survey and the population genetic study using a mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase 1 gene to understand its genetic diversity and distribution pattern in Korea. The results show that it has successfully settled down in South Korea and there are only 10 haplotypes and the populations of the insect are highly differentiated. The results indicate that only few maternal lineages were introduced and their dispersal was restrained due to their short distance flying tendency since their introduction.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of the Black Soldier Fly(BSF) larvae on growth performance, carcass rate, and fatty acid profile of chicken meat in broiler chicks. Four hundred eighty 1-d-old broilers(Ross 308) were distributed into 3 treatments with 4 pens at 30 birds per replicate. Treatments were corn-soybean meal based broiler diet (control) and the basal diet replaced with BSF at the level of 3 and 6% respectively. Viability was not different significantly. Body weight gain was higher in control than other treatments. Feed intake was not statistically different of treatments. Feed conversion ratio was lower in ontrol than other treatments. Relative weight of breast meat was significantly increased in all treated groups than in control. But, another relative weights of chicken meat cuts (thigh, wing, neck, back) were not significantly different among the groups. In conclusion, it could be suggested that dietary supplementation of Black Soldier Fly larvae could beneficially improved the performance on broiler

In order to establish artificial indoor rearing techniques for the black soldier fly (BSF), we developed indoor rearing instructions and collection manual for each developmental stage of the fly. The fly collection was conducted between June and October at 1 month interval. Calf feed and food waste were most effective to attract adults. Collection efficiency is higher from the trap installed in a shady spot than that in an open spot. It was highest to collect flies in August and September. As the egg-laying medium for the artificial egg collection, calf feed and food waste were most effective. The optimal number of the medium (W*D*H=60*40*15cm) was 8 for 2000 adults (male:Female=1:1) in the egg-laying net (W*D*H=4*2*2m). Flower foams and wooden blocks with holes were used as egg-laying sites. Adult females preferred the holes on average 3~5mm in diameter and 7~10mm in depth for oviposition. Larvae reared in low density (2~4 individuals/㎠) showed superior practical traits than those reared in an overcrowded environment (6~10 individuals/㎠). It is important to place the fly pupae in moist sawdusts (humidity: 20~40%), since a pupa tends to hide in a refuge. Adult insects should be employed for laying eggs for food waste processing immediately after emergence. When treated at 10℃ for 10 days after pupation, emergence rate of the insect was still 93.3%. By keeping pupae at the low temperature, emergence timing could be manipulated with about 10 day flexibility.

There are tens of millions of animal deaths annually due to infectious diseases such as AI (Avian Influenza) and footand- mouth disease. Currently, eco-friendly and economical methods of disposal of the resulting animal carcasses are being studied. Among them, the black soldier fly (Hermetia Illucens, BSF) is attracting attention as an alternative to disposal methods that cause environmental pollution, such as incineration or landfills, because of its strong organic decomposition ability. In this study, the efficiency of BSF larvae for decomposition of broiler, pig, or duck was determined. Disposal ability relative to BSF larva level was measured for each. Our results confirmed that all three animals could be decomposed after 48 hours when BSF larva were injected at greater than 300% of the weight of the carcass.

Much research on Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) is underway in the disposal of food waste. In addition to food waste treatment, it has received much attention in the industrial using of by-products such as feed, compost, and antibiotics. In this study, the treatment efficiency of organic wastes and larval growth were investigated according to the amount of input. The organic wastes used in this study were chicken carcasses and food waste. In case of carcass treatment, to the exclusion of bones and feathers, it was treated about 83 percent. Food waste was completely treated in 48 hours when 50 percent of the weight of the food was put into the larvae. The maximum larval growth was observed with 10 percent injected, from 0.076 g to 0.254 g. However, there was no difference in the growth of larvae when 30 percent or more was added.

Since 2013, due to the London Convention prohibiting marine dumping of waste, many problems have occurred because food waste generated every day must be handled on the ground. Owing to recent institutional efforts and various technical studies for eco-friendly food waste treatment, various methods of treating food waste using insects have been studied. However, efficiency of Korean food waste treatment is in fact known to be low due to the high salinity of Korean food waste. In this study, we evaluated the treatment efficiency of food waste with various salt and moisture contents by the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). The results showed that the moisture content does not affect food waste treatment efficiency by the black soldier fly and the decomposition ability of food waste is good even at salt contents as high as 3%.

Ocean dumping of all of the land waste was banned from 2014 by the London Convention. Therefore, the development of new technology to handle the huge amount of food waste are urgently sought. In particular, we were able to handle the garbage by using the Hermetia illucens by 2013 Presidential Decree. During this situation, we've been studied how to remove food waste by using Hermetia illucens as Environmentally harmless insect. In this study, four kinds of sample as a food waste, pork, bean-curd and boiled rice and mixed waste were selected. We tried to find efficiencies with different type we selected respectively. Efficiency of pretreated food waste with the form of the porridge was compared to rarefood waste efficiency.
