The buffer is a critical barrier component in an engineered barrier system, and its purpose is to prevent potential radionuclides from leaking out from a damaged canister by filling the void in the repository. No experimental parameters exist that can describe the buffer expansion phenomenon when Kyeongju bentonite, which is a buffer candidate material available in Korea, is exposed to groundwater. As conventional experiments to determine these parameters are time consuming and complicated, simple swelling pressure tests, numerical modeling, and machine learning are used in this study to obtain the parameters required to establish a numerical model that can simulate swelling. Swelling tests conducted using Kyeongju bentonite are emulated using the COMSOL Multiphysics numerical analysis tool. Relationships between the swelling phenomenon and mechanical parameters are determined via an artificial neural network. Subsequently, by inputting the swelling tests results into the network, the values for the mechanical parameters of Kyeongju bentonite are obtained. Sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the influential parameters. Results of the numerical analysis based on the identified mechanical parameters are consistent with the experimental values.

A compacted bentonite buffer is a major component of engineered barrier systems, which are designed for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. In most countries, the target temperature required to maintain safe functioning is below 100°C. If the target temperature of the compacted bentonite buffer can be increased above 100°C, the disposal area can be dramatically reduced. To increase the target temperature of the buffer, it is necessary to investigate its properties at temperatures above 100°C. Although some studies have investigated thermal-hydraulic properties above 100°C, few have evaluated the water suction of compacted bentonite. This study addresses that knowledge gap by evaluating the water suction variation for compacted Korean bentonite in the 25–150°C range, with initial saturations of 0 and 0.22 under constant saturation conditions. We found that water suction decreased by 5–20% for a temperature increase of 100–150°C.

The sorption of Eu on MX-80 bentonite in Na–Ca–Cl solutions is investigated at a molal proton concentration (pHm) range of 3 to 10 and an ionic strength (I) range of 0.1 to 6 m (mol·kgw−1). The sorption equilibrium of Eu on MX-80 is achieved within 14 to 21 d at I = 0.1 and 6 m. The sorption distribution coefficient (Kd) values of Eu for MX-80 increase as pHm increases from 3 to 6 for all I values, and they are independent of pHm between 8 and 10 at I ≥ 0.5 m. Meanwhile, at I = 0.1 m, the Kd value at pHm = 10 is slightly lower than those at pHm = 8 and 9. The Kd values are not affected by the I values between 0.5 m and 6 m, whereas the Kd value at I = 0.1 m is greater than those at I ≥ 0.5 m, except at pHm = 10. A two-site protolysis nonelectrostatic surface complexation and cation exchange sorption model is applied to the Eu sorption data for I ≤ 4 m, and the equilibrium constants of the sorption reactions are estimated.

The buffer material plays a role in preventing the excessive rise in temperature generated from the high-level radioactive waste by dissipating the decay heat to the rock. For this reason, the buffer material must have thermal properties to ensure the performance of the deep geological repository. This study measured the thermal conductivity of sand-bentonite according to the mixing ratio to improve the thermal properties. The compacted buffer was manufactured with a sand-bentonite mixing ratio of 6:4, 7:3, and 8:2 with 9 to 12% water content. As a result, the thermal conductivity increases as the ratio of sand increases. As a further study, it is necessary to experiment on whether sand-bentonite’s hydraulic, mechanical, and chemical performance is suitable for the stable operation of a repository.

Colloid-facilitated migration has been significantly concerned with the acceleration of the radionuclide mobility in the HLW repository. In the repository system, the compacted bentonite, which is the buffer material, could be the major source for colloid generation; hence, the understanding of colloid generation from the bentonite is the essential to expect the colloid-facilitated radionuclide migration. This study aimed to investigate the colloid generation using a bentonite-based micro-scale flow path system, which called microfluidics. In order to fabricate the microfluidics, direct milling method was applied to make a mold by computer numerical control. The fabricated mold applied to prepare the microfluidic chip by Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), in which the size of microchannel was designed to be one micrometer. Initially, sylgard 184 and curing agent mixed and stirred for 10 min, afterwards the bubbles in the paste was removed in the vacuum desiccator for 30 min. Then the paste was poured into the mold, and finally dried for 4 hours at 80°C in a dry oven. The compacted Ca-bentonite chip was prepared by the cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method with the dry density of 1.6 g·cm−3. The microfluidic chip and compacted bentonite chip were assembled by an acryl jig, the flow rate was adjusted by 20 mL syringe equipped syringe pump. The degree of colloid generation accompanied with the erosion of bentonite was gravimetrically examined after the experiment. The effect of the pH and ionic strength on the colloid formation was investigated through the particle size, stability and aggregation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first examination for the colloid generation using microfluidics; these results would give information to understand the colloid formation from the compacted Ca-bentonite in the HLW repository system.

Increasing thermal conductivity of buffer materials makes the disposal tunnel and hole spacings in high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repositories decrease, so that the area of the HLW repository decreases, which gives more choices to choose the HLW repository site and economical cost savings to construct HLW repositories. Thus, developing enhanced buffer materials with improved thermal conductivity is needed. One of the methods to develop enhanced buffer materials is to add additives to the bentonite which is main material for buffer materials. Most additives have high thermal conductivity, but most additives do not swell or less swell than bentonite, so that the swelling pressure of the enhanced buffer materials by additives decreases compared to the swelling pressure of pure bentonite buffer materials. Swelling pressure is an important performance criterion to design buffer materials. Thus, it is important to confirm the swelling pressure of the enhanced bentonite. However, it is not simple to measure the swelling pressure of the buffer materials and furthermore, it takes several days to measure the swelling pressure of the buffer materials. For these reasons, swelling index can be considered to predict the swelling pressure of the enhanced buffer materials relatively. In this study, it was investigated through tests how the swelling index of bentonite-sand mixtures change according to the amount of sand and it was found that the linear relationship between swelling index and sand amount in the bentonite-sand mixtures.

Bentonite is considered as buffer of engineered barrier for retardation of radionuclide migration. Bentonite has low permeability, high swelling and high sorption capacity for radioactive nuclides. Properties have been widely investigated under various geochemical conditions simulating deep geological environments. The chemical stability of bentonite is an important factor in evaluating the long-term stability of the bentonite buffer. However, the presence of impurities in bentonite clays can reduce the retention capacity for retardation of radionuclide migration value of bentonite. Therefore, the bentonite purification is necessary. In the present study, grade improvement of montmorillonite was conducted using ultrasonic and froth flotation methods. As a result of confirming the grade of montmorillonite according to the optimal ultrasonic intensity for ultrasonic irradiation is 1.0 kHz of bentonite in Gyeongju (KJ-II) increased from 60% to 78%. In case of froth flotation method using PSS (0.1 mM) as a reagent, the grade of montmorillonite increased up to 90%.

Various models have been proposed to describe the swelling behavior of buffer in high level waster repository. One of the most notable models, the Barcelona Basic Model (BBM), is a mechanical model that simulates the behavior of unsaturated ground and is widely applied to soils that undergo large expansion due to water. Among the BBM parameters of Kyeongju bentonite, which is found in Korea, there are no experimental data for parameters that describe the unsaturated state. Such hydromechanical properties should be characterized through experimental programs. However, such experiments are highly complicated and require long periods of time to produce an unsaturated state through different methods according to the suction range. Although there are several studies in which geotechnical parameters were obtained through a back analysis instead of direct experiments, few studies have employed machine learning methods for the identification of geotechnical parameters. In this study, instead of direct experiments, the results of a relatively simple swelling pressure experiment was compared to the numerical analysis results to propose a method of determining some of BBM parameters. Influential factors were identified by a sensitivity analysis and the values of the factors were estimated using an artificial neural network and optimization method. The obtained parameters were applied to the numerical model to estimate the swelling pressure growth, which was subsequently compared to the experimental value. As a result, it was found that there was no significant difference between the two swelling values.

A geological repository system consists of a disposal canister with packed spent fuel, buffer material, backfill material, and intact rock. Among these, the bentonite buffer is one of the most important components to assure the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). As the bentonite buffer is installed as a block type, it is important to fabricate homogeneously. Generally, floating die method and cold isostatic press (CIP) method are used to fabricate bentonite blocks. In this paper, two bentonite blocks were produced using float die method at first, and CIP method was additionally applied to just one block. After that, several samples were cored from two blocks. The dry density and water content of several samples produced from two blocks were measured.

Bentonite is the most probable candidate to be used as a buffer in a deep geological repository with high swelling properties, hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, and radionuclide sorption ability. Among them, the radionuclide sorption ability prevents or delays the transport of radionuclides into the nearby environment when an accident occurs and the radionuclide leaks from the canister, so it needs to be strengthened in terms of long-term disposal safety. Here, we proposed a surface modification method in which some inorganic additives were added to form NaP zeolite on the surface of the bentonite yielded at Yeonil, South Korea. We confirmed that the NaP zeolite was well-formed on the bentonite surface, which also increased the sorption efficiency of Cs and Sr from groundwater conditions. Both NaP and NaX zeolite can be produced and we have demonstrated that the generation mechanism of NaX and NaP is due to the number of homogeneous/heterogeneous nucleation sites and the number of nutrients supplied from an aluminosilicate gel during the surface modification process. This study showed the potential of surface modification on bentonite to enhance the safety of deep geological radioactive waste repository by improving the radionuclide sorption ability of bentonite.

Safe storage of spent nuclear fuel in deep underground repositories necessitates an understanding of the long-term alteration of metal canisters and buffer materials. A small-scale laboratory alteration test was performed on metal (Cu or Fe) chips embedded in compacted bentonite blocks placed in anaerobic water for 1 year. Lactate, sulfate, and bacteria were separately added to the water to promote biochemical reactions in the system. The bentonite blocks immersed in the water were dismantled after 1 year, showing that their alteration was insignificant. However, the Cu chip exhibited some microscopic etch pits on its surface, wherein a slight sulfur component was detected. Overall, the Fe chip was more corroded than the Cu chip under the same conditions. The secondary phase of the Fe chip was locally found as carbonate materials, such as siderite (FeCO3) and calcite ((Ca, Fe)CO3). These secondary products can imply that the local carbonate occurrence on the Fe chip may be initiated and developed by an evolution (alteration) of bentonite and a diffusive provision of biogenic CO2 gas. These laboratory scale results suggest that the actual long-term alteration of metal canisters/bentonite blocks in the engineered barrier could be possible by microbial activities.

Extensive studies have been conducted on thermal conductivity of bentonite buffer materials, as it affects the safety performance of barriers engineered to contain high-level radioactive waste. Bentonite is composed of several minerals, and studies have shown that the difference in the thermal conductivity of bentonites is due to the variation in their mineral composition. However, the specific reasons contributing to the difference, especially with regard to the thermal conductivity of bentonites with similar mineral composition, have not been elucidated. Therefore, in this study, bentonites with significantly different thermal conductivities, but of similar mineral compositions, are investigated. Most bentonites contain more than 60% of montmorillonite. Therefore, it is believed that the exchangeable cations of montmorillonite could affect the thermal conductivity of bentonites. The effect of bentonite type was comparatively analyzed and was verified through the effective medium model for thermal conductivity. Our results show that Ca-type bentonites have a higher thermal conductivity than Na-type bentonites.
