As Korea has recently become a multicultural society, English teachers acknowledge the need to address anti-racism in the classroom. However, how to raise students’ racial awareness and ways to incorporate racial issues into English language instruction have not been sufficiently studied in the Korean teacher education context. The aims of this study were to provide pre-service English teachers with a guide to implementing antiracist pedagogy in their language teaching and assessing its impact on their racial literacy development and to examine how pre-service English teachers’ racial literacy can be developed through multiple self-reflective practices and microteaching experiences in their teacher education programs. This paper first introduces an anti-racist curriculum for pre-service English teachers intended to raise their multicultural awareness, and then provides multiple educational resources and teaching strategies to help them become culturally responsive language teachers. The paper concludes with some pedagogical implications regarding the necessity of including culturally responsive teaching in teacher education programs.

This study explores the ways in which sociocultural perspectives on English language education can contribute to teacher education the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Three key words that represent the relationship between sociocultural perspectives and English teacher education—context, interaction, and social practice—can each be linked to the key concepts of criticality, multimodality, and action research. Teachers of English need to be ready for the forthcoming changes in the AI era, for which they must be equipped with a critical ability to focus on issues and needs in the Korean context. This ability can be applied in teaching students various types of interactions, especially those involving the use of computers, and will create opportunities for teachers to conduct research of their own and cultivate a professional teacher identity. This study concludes by recommending substantial changes in the current pre-service and in-service English teacher education programs in accordance with these key concepts.

In this paper, we explore how English language teacher education could be envisioned in different ways if one were to adopt a ‘social’ approach toward English language education. More specifically, drawing on our experience, which we gathered as Korean faculty members of two Canadian universities, with the help of reflexive inquiry, we highlighted the importance of fostering critical intercultural competence among language teachers. Focusing on a small-scale case study of Korean teacher candidates who participated in a short-term community-based service learning in Canada, our analysis examines how to train English teachers to develop their own intercultural understanding through experiential learning activities, so they can better develop intercultural competence among their students. We argue that a critical understanding of linguistic and cultural diversity is an essential component of English language teacher education in increasingly diverse EFL classrooms across South Korea in the era of globalization, transnationalism, and multilingual/ multiculturalism.

There has been an increasing demand for effective on-line English teacher education programs due to the advantages including cost efficiency and easy access. Despite the provision of a variety of on-line English teacher education programs, only a small number of studies on on-line in-service education program for English teachers have been carried out. This study aims to provide a basic model of on-line in-service English language teacher education based on the critical awareness. To do this, previous studies on on-line in-service English language teacher education in Korea and abroad were critically reviewed and key issues were derived. They are top-down approach to on-line teacher education curriculum development, unsustainability of teacher education, disconnection of teacher education to practice, insufficient establishment of community of practice, and deficiency of reflection on teaching practice. Three on-line English teacher education programs were selected and evaluated by using these key issues. It is suggested that bottom-up approach to curriculum development, establishment of community of practice for the sustainability of teacher education, and reflective learning for connecting teacher education to real classroom practice be included as key components for effective on-line teacher education.

This study aims at exploring the theoretical perspectives and research related to second language teacher identities. In particular, this paper focuses on the studies on the identities of English teachers in the Korean educational system. Major findings are as follows: First, based on the previous literature on teacher identities, teacher identities are defined as dynamic, multidimensional, and changing, as they continuously interact with individual, social, and cultural contexts. Second, it was found that studies have focused on (1) the meta-analyses of English teacher identities, (2) native-speaking English teacher identities, (3) the identities of non-native-speaking English teachers co-teaching with native-English-speaking teachers, (4) the identities of non-native-speaking English teachers including pre- and in-service teachers, and (5) teacher identity development through teacher education activities. Lastly, this paper brings up issues and suggestions on the formation and development of English teacher identities. It also offers directions for the future research on professional identities of second language teachers.

The role of the teacher in the EFL context is a key to success for the improvement of learners' English abilities. Research has been conducted on how to improve English teacher education system in Korea to cultivate competent English teachers. However, few attempts were made to examine how the English teacher education system in general has changed in the last few decades. This study aims to revisit the English teacher education system in Korea on the basis of the teacher education models. For this, the pre- and in-service English teacher education research and programs are reviewed and analyzed. At least two new changes are recognized. The current pre-service program has become more English education oriented compared to past programs. In the in-service program, a new perspective of "teacher development" has been adopted to emphasize teachers' self-reflection. Several practical ideas were suggested for both pre- and in-service English teacher education programs so as to meet teachers' needs and the changes in the Korean EFL environment.

The study examined the 2009 overseas program of the SNU Intensive English Teacher Training Program (IETTP) to evaluate overall management and its effects for future improvements. Following an overview of the 2009 overseas program, the present study provides the results of the program survey and English proficiency tests that were conducted on 42 trainees. The results indicated that the program was successful in terms of its management and improving English teachers' English proficiency. Especially, the trainees showed strong satisfaction for school visits, culture excursions, and special lecture series which exposed them to invaluable experience of looking into an English speaking country. Three suggestions were proposed in terms of managing and evaluating the overseas program of the IETTP. First, the IETTP needs to take proaction in identifying the needs of in-service English teachers and to reflect those needs in its overseas program. Second, the IETTP needs to develop a customized overseas program which can best support main goals of its overall six-month training program. Lastly, an evaluation of the program needs to incorporate more than just a survey method to triangulate the outcome of the study.

This paper purposes to show a need for an effective commensuration between the questions of the National Examination for English Teacher Recruitment and the curricular components of the Departments of English Education. It analyzes the questions of Recruitment Exam for the past 12 years and the curricular components of the Departments of English Education of six representative universities sampled on a location basis, in order to see whether or not the curricula of Departments of English Education are adapted and are commensurate with the categories of the questions of the Teacher Recruitment Examination. This paper claims that, when the curricular components of the Departments of English Education are designed for the Teacher Recruitment Exam, this would be a better way in view of helping to get students over the hump of passing the Teacher Recruitment Examination.
