Childrena zenobia is very hopeful as an industrial insect for its beautiful color and long life span. This study was conducted to establish the mass rearing methods of C. zenobia to develop it as an industrial insect.
C. zenobia appeared in the high mountains of about 1,000m above sea level at Pocheon and Gapyoung during high temperature season from July to August, and in the low mountains of about 400m above sea level at Yeoncheon on September. The first oviposition time after mating took 27.8±9.0 days and the number of eggs per female was 180. The life span of adult was 39.3±20.2 days in male and 59.0±18.7 days in female. The hatchability of F1 generation showed high rate over 80% at 20∼30℃, while the rate of F5 generation was very low under 5%. The proper food for rearing the larva was Viola papilionacea. The developmental period from 1st larva to adult was 63.6±5.1 days and the hatching time was 8.7±0.9 days at 20℃ and 48.0±3.3 days and the hatching time was 8.1±1.2 days at 25℃.
These results seemed to be very suggestive that C. zenobia could be massively reared in the condition of indoor rearing room resulting in the utilization of it as an industrial insect for various regional festivals.
Precautionary measures are cost-effective for the introduction and management of industrial insects. However, the Influx of exotic pests has not been managed very well in Korea, because of the system problems such as the lack of quarantine facilities. Additionally, there is no managing facilities or regulations for their installation according to the categories about industrial insects in Korea. Firstly, we studied the foreign guidelines for arthropod containment system such as ACLs(Arthropod Containment Levels) and the applicable guidelines for insect quarantine facilities in Korea. Secondly, we classified the types of industrial insects by their characteristics and considered the practicable guidelines for installation of quarantine facilities according to the industrial insect types. Lastly, with the related references including the details about installation and management for LMO(Living genetically Modified Organism) research facilities, we discussed appropriate guidelines for installation and management of pest quarantine system in Korea.
Currently, honeybee colonies are not stable and suffer from the infection of pathogens, affecting the pollination. For the alternatives to this difficulty, Bombus terrestris has been imported and used for pollination in agricultural fields. Although imported insects for pollination are very useful, the potential risk exposing to novel pathogens has been raised. To assess the risk primarily, we designed and synthesized PCR primers for detection of pathogens and parasites in B. terrestris. The samples were obtained from companies importing B. terrestris or field collections and genomic DNAs not showing physical shearing were purified. PCR for detection of pathogen- or parasite-specific gene revealed several DNA fragments were amplified in expected molecular size including Kashmir Bee Virus, Varroa jacobsoni, V. rindereri, Acarapis woodi and Aspergillus flavus. These amplified DNA fragments are in the process of cloning for DNA sequencing to confirm the target gene amplification. We also have plans to optimize the PCR conditions for each amplified target gene and try to develop biomarkers for diagnosis.
Stick insect has several peculiarities like parthenogenesis, unique external features and dropping oviposition, so it is very hopeful to use for industrial insect. The oviposition was established by only female without fertilization with sperm of male which was not discovered during this study. The oviposition period was 37.3±14.9 days and the number of eggs per female was 41.5±16.5 eggs. The hatchability was 73.3% at 25℃and 66.7% after low temperature treatment(8℃, 60 days). The developmental periods and the length of egg were 100.9±4.2 days and 0.33±0.0cm, respectively, and the adult's life span was 49.7±16.0days. Differently other research which reported five nymph stage, the developmental stages of nymph showed five(62.9%) or six(37.1%) stages. The duration and the length of nymph increased according to the increase of nymph stage. Stick insect preferred the leaf of American locust, White oak, Chestnut, Bush clover in order but could be reared with food of the leaf of all these trees. Stick insects are herbivorus but made an attack each other when encountered in the small space. For sustaining mass rearing of stick insect, it is needed that the development of artificial diet and high density rearing method.
To evaluate environment of farm lands using indicator insects and evaluation indices, the insect abundance of which is one of the major criteria for the evaluation of agricultural environment of farm land in urban areas and industrial complex, three sites (Ansan, Daesan, Suncheon) were designated and monitored from 2004 to 2006. The flora of agricultural land was more than urban areas and industrial complex of that in three sites. Soil, water and air pollution of urban areas and industrial complex were more serious than those of agricultural land in three sites. Overall population of insects were high from June to August in the surveyed three sites. Collected insects in agricultural land were 12 order, 106 family and 166 species, those in urban areas were 11 order, 102 family and 148 species, and in industrial complex were 11 order, 100 family and 152 species. Species and population belonging to Coleoptera was dominant in the surveyed sites. The insect diversity indices of farm land were 2.36 in agricultural land, 1.92 urban areas and industrial complex. And agricultural environment of agricultural land was good, urban areas was common and industrial complex was poor. Based on the major criteria of evaluation items, the criteria were selected as diversity index over 2.1, insect indicator Pheropsophus javanus in agricultural land, diversity index 1.5-2.0, insect indicator Nephotettix cincticeps in urban areas, diversity index below 1.5, insect indicator Pagria signata in industrial complex.
