Graphene-modified melamine sponges (RGO-MSs) were prepared, as adsorbents with photothermal conversion ability, utilizing solar energy to achieve heavy oil temperature rise, viscosity reduction, and efficient adsorption recovery of highly viscous oil. The RGO-MSs were prepared through a simple impregnation method. The photothermal performance and heavy oil adsorption performances of RGO-MSs with different densities and thicknesses were observed. It was found that as the density increases, the thermal conductivity of RGO-MS increases too, leading to the increase of the average oil absorption rate. The reduction of thickness is beneficial to improving of the adsorption rate. The prepared RGO-MS with a density of 21.5 mg/cm−3 and a height of 1 cm (RGO-MS-3-1) shows excellent mechanical properties and fatigue resistance. Cyclic adsorption–desorption of RGO-MS-3-1 was achieved through extrusion/ ethanol washing. After 10 cycles of reuse through extrusion, the adsorption capacity decreased from 52.90 to 50.02 g g− 1, with a loss of 5.4%. The material was then washed with petroleum ether and ethanol in turn. Its adsorption capacity can restored to 98.8% of the initial value, showing a promising application prospect on heavy oil leakage treatment. The easily prepared RGO-MS exhibits excellent light absorption and photothermal oil adsorption properties, providing a good solution for the problem of heavy oil leakage at sea.

In this study, we investigate the impact of Isophorone diisocyanate functionalized graphene oxide (IPDI-GO) on the flame retardancy of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). IPDI-GO was synthesized and introduced into the RPUF matrix. The flame retardancy of RPUF was significantly enhanced by the incorporation of IPDI-GO, as evidenced by a reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) by 25% and total smoke production (TSP) by 15% in comparison to pure RPUF when IPDI-GO was incorporated at 3 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that IPDI-GO contributed to the formation of a compact, continuous char layer on the RPUF surface. This study underscores the potential of IPDI-GO as a promising flame retardant additive for RPUF.

Dimethyl silicone oil is widely used due to its excellent thermal stability and good wetting properties. In this study, a series of thermal conductive materials was prepared by physically blending and chemically loading graphene as a thermal conductive filler into dimethyl silicone oil, and their thermal conductivity and tribological properties were investigated. The thermal conductivity of the composites was tested by a thermal conductivity meter and a thermal imaging camera, while the tribological properties of the composites were evaluated using a CSM friction and wear tester. The results showed that both thermal conductivity and tribological properties were improved to a certain extent. The particle size and amount of graphene had a significant influence on the thermal conductivity. For graphene with a single particle size, the thermal conductivity increased with increasing graphene content. The friction coefficient under dry friction conditions was significantly reduced by adding graphene to the silicone oil, as revealed by the friction and wear test.

Owing to the great demand for portable and wearable chemical sensors, the development of all-solid-state potentiometric ion sensors is highly desirable considering their simplicity and stability. However, most ion sensors are challenged by the penetration of water and gas molecules into ion-selective membranes, causing unstable and undesirable sensing performances. In this study, a hydrophobic ionic liquid-modified graphene (Gr) sheet was prepared using a fluid dynamics-induced exfoliation and functionalization process. The high hydrophobicity and electrical double-layer capacitance of Gr make it a potential solid-state ion-to-electron transducer for the development of potentiometric sodium-ion ( Na+) sensors. The as-prepared Na+ sensors effectively prevented the formation of the water layer and penetration of gas species, resulting in stable and high sensing performances. The Na+ sensors showed a Nernstian sensitivity of 58.11 mV/[Na+] with a low relative standard deviation (0.46), fast response time (5.1 s), good selectivity (K < 10− 4), and good durability. Furthermore, the Na+ sensor demonstrated its feasibility in practical applications by measuring accurate and reliable ion concentrations of artificial human sweat and tear samples, comparable to a commercial ion meter.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to experimentally analyze the flexural strength characteristics of cement mortar mixtures simultaneously incorporated with graphene oxide (GO) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, and to understand the composite effect of those on enhancing resistance against the initiation and progression of micro-cracks, as well as the control of macro-cracks in flexural behavior. METHODS : Cement mortar(w/c=0.5) specimens for flexural strength test, mixing 6 mm and 12 mm PVA fibers at 1% and 2% volume ratios, were fabricated. Additionally, specimens incorporating GO at a cement weight ratio of 0.05% were prepared for each mixture to analyze the effect of GO. Therefore total eight types of mixture were prepared. The fabricated specimens were subjected to flexural strength tests after curing in waterbath for 7 and 28 days. Concurrently, digital images for analyzing deformation in accordance with loading history were obtained at a rate of 20 Hz using the DIC technique. Through displacement and strain calculation via DIC, the flexural behavior characteristics of the mixtures combined with GO and PVA fibers were precisely analyzed. Furthermore, the composite effect on flexural behavior characteristics when GO and PVA fibers are incorporated was discussed. RESULTS : For the PVA fiber-reinforced cement mortar mixture, the incorporation of 0.05% GO increased the crack initiation load by up to 23%, and the maximum resistive load after cracking by up to 24%. Moreover, introducing GO into the PVA fiber-reinforced mixture increased the flexural strain just before cracking by approximately 30 to 50%, while the maximum resistive load after cracking exhibited similar strain levels with or without GO incorporation. Therefore, under flexural behavior, the integration of GO might delay crack initiation by increasing the strain concurrent with the rise in flexural stress before crack occurrence. It also seems to contribute to reducing crack expansion by synergistically interacting with PVA fibers after crack occurrence. CONCLUSIONS : It was experimentally examined that the flexural strength of PVA fiber reinforced cement mortar is improved by incorporating GO. Moreover, GO enhances resistance of crack occurrance and reduces crack propagation in combination with PVA fibers. This study suggests that simultaneous incorporation of GO and PVA fibers can synergistically improve the performance of cement composites.

Combination of liquid-phase exfoliation and hydrothermal method has progressed in recent years mainly on production of 2D materials. In this study, graphene was successfully synthesized via combinatorial of liquid-phase exfoliation and hydrothermal method with the aid of various conductive surfactants perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylate (PTCA), lithium perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylate (LiPTCA) and sodium perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylate (NaPTCA). The effect of the lithium ( Li+) and sodium ( Na+) cations toward the efficiency of the graphene exfoliation process and its electrical properties was thoroughly investigated. Based on the characterization techniques, it is revealed that NaPTCA is the ideal conductive surfactant to exfoliate graphene sheets. X-ray diffraction spectra verified that the Na+ cation certainly can enhance the exfoliation process by expanding the interlayer spacing. The lateral size of the graphene sheets with Na-PTCA surfactant was the smallest (4.17 μm) as observed from SEM micrograph. The maximum concentration of the graphene yield was achieved up to 0.151 mgmL− 1 in NaPTCA surfactant alongside with excellent electrical conductivity of 746.27 Sm− 1 and relevant specific capacitance of 129 Fg− 1.

A promising approach to enhance catalytic performance of supported heterogeneous nano-metal catalysts is to uniformly disperse active nanoparticles on the support. In this work, N-doped carbon-modified graphene (G@NC) nanosheet is designed and prepared to anchor Pd–Fe bimetallic nanoparticles (Pd–Fe/G@NC). The N-doped carbon modification on graphene surface could construct a sandwich-like structure (G@NC), which not only prevented the re-stacking of graphene nanosheets but also provided confined space for stable anchoring of bimetallic Pd–Fe nanoparticles. Benefitted from the unique structural property and synergetic effect of metal Pd and Fe species, the as-obtained Pd–Fe/G@NC composite displays excellent catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction with a turnover frequency of 613.2 min− 1, which is far superior to that of the mono-metal counterparts (Fe/G@NC and Pd/G@NC). More importantly, Pd–Fe/G@NC catalyst also exhibits favorable catalytic performance in the reduction of other nitroaromatic compounds (nitrobenzene, 4-nitrotoluene, 4-chloronitrobenzene, and so on). In addition, Pd–Fe/G@NC can catalyze the oxidation of furfuraldehyde to furoic acid with a high yield of 88.64%. This work provides a new guide for rationally designing and developing advanced supported heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst.

In this study, UiO-66-NH2 was synthesized and incorporated with graphene aerosol (UiO-66-NH2/GA) and ethylenediamine functionalized graphene oxide (UiO-66-NH2/GO-NH2). These composites were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet–visible light spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. UiO-66-NH2/GO-NH2 exhibited 93% adsorption of quinoline in 5 h, UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2/GA presented 80.4% and 86.5%, respectively. The high adsorption observed on UiO-66-NH2/GO-NH2 was attributed to the unique electronic properties, and hydrogen bonding between the nitrogen atom of quinoline and NH2- phenyl fragment of UiO-66-NH2, and N–H of ethylenediamine. GO also offered combined strong π–π interactions on its surface, and the oxygen coverage (~ 50%) on GO within the structure is responsible for the formation of strong hydrogen bonds with quinoline. Theoretical calculation suggested that UiO-66-NH2/GO-NH2 presented a more favourable adsorption energy (− 18.584 kcal/ mol) compared to UiO-66-NH2 (− 16.549 kcal/mol) and UiO-66-NH2/GA (− 13.991 kcal/mol). These results indicate that nanocomposites have a potential application in quinoline capture technologies in the process of adsorptive denitrogenation.

Chemical incorporation of epoxy-modified graphitic layers in epoxy/novolac phenolic resin matrices was carried out through co-curing of epoxy and novolac resins using triphenylphosphine as catalyst. First, (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) was grafted on graphene oxide (GO) surface to obtain epoxidized GO layers. Then epoxy resin and GPTMS-modified GO were incorporated into thermosetting reaction using novolac resin in the presence of triphenylphosphine. Covalent attachment of GPTMS-modified GO to the resin matrices resulted in a hybrid composite with high thermal characteristics. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were used for approving modification of GO with GPTMS. The images resulted from scanning and transmission electron microscopies exhibited GO layers with lots of creases turning to smooth layers with a few thin ripples after modification with GPTMS. TGA results showed that thermal characteristics of resins were improved by the addition of GPTMS-modified GO. Char residue of the hybrid composites containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of GPTMS-modified GO reached 28.1 and 34.3%, respectively. Also, their maximum thermal degradation temperature was also increased by the incorporation of GPTMS-modified GO.

We have studied a method to prepare polydopamine-modified reduced graphene oxide-supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt– PDA–RGO). The Pt–PDA–RGO nanocomposites were synthesized by a wet-coating process, which was induced by selfpolymerization of dopamine. As an eco-friendly and versatile adhesive source in nature, dopamine could be easily adhered to surfaces of organic material and inorganic material via polymerization processes and spontaneous adsorption under weak alkaline pH conditions. To apply the unique features of dopamine, we synthesized Pt–PDA–RGO nanocomposites with a different quantity of dopamine, which are expected to preserve the improved Pt adsorption on graphene, resulting in the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The morphology and micro-structure were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Compared to pristine Pt–deposited RGO (Pt–RGO), Pt–PDA–RGO (30 wt% dopamine against RGO) nanocomposites showed a superior electrochemical active surface area for a methanol oxidation. This could be related to the fact that the optimized c

Polyurethane (PU) nanofibers containing graphene oxide (GO) and Ag doped functionalized reduced graphene oxide (Ag-RGO) were successfully prepared via the electrospinning technique. The uniform distribution of GO sheets along with Ag nanoparticle in the nanofibers was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the elemental mapping technique. X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetric analysis verified the presence of GO and Ag in the bicomposite nanofibrous mats. Antibacterial tests against Escherichia coli demonstrated that the addition of GO and Ag-RGO to the PU nanofiber greatly enhanced bactericidal efficiency. Overall, these features of the synthesized nanofibers make them a promising candidate material in the biomedical field for applications such as tissue engineering, wound healing, and drug delivery systems.

Graphene oxide (GO) can be used as a membrane material itself or a nanofiller to enhance gas separation performance of polymer membranes. Since GO has high CO2 affinity due to some polar groups, particularly GO membranes or GO/polymer membranes have been extensively studied for CO2 separation. Although ultrathin GO membranes show outstanding CO2 separation properties, the gas permeance through GO membranes is still low owing to high tortuosity caused by high aspect ratio of GO sheets. In this study, mixed-matrix membranes consisting of modified GO (as a dispersed phase) and high permeable polymer were prepared by combining each advantage of GO and high permeable polymer for improving gas separation performance. Both single-gas and mixed-gas permeation experiments were conducted with or without humidified feeds for post-combustion CO2 capture.

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) process have attracted much attention in the field of wastewater treatment and desalination, respectively. However, MBR has membrane fouling which is the major obstacle in maximizing their efficiency. Also, for the RO process, low energy efficiency still remains unanswered in RO process. In this study, it is demonstrated that the application of graphene oxide (GO) to membrane fabrication can be a novel strategy to overcome the residual problems. In detail, GO was applied to fabrication of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane for improving anti-biofouling capability of membrane. Furthermore, addition of GO enhanced mechanical strength of highly porous support layer, which enabled the thin-film composite RO membrane to have 1.6 to 4 times higher water flux compared to other RO membranes.

Size-sorted graphene nanoplatelets are highly desired for fundamental research and technological applications of graphene. Here we show a facile approach for fabricating size-sorted graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatelets by a simple centrifugal method using different dispersion solvents. We found that the small-sized GO nanoplatelets were more effectively separated when dispersed in water or dimethylformamide (DMF) than in an alkali aqueous solution. After several iterations of the centrifugation, the sizes of GO in the supernatant solution were mostly several micrometers. We found that the GO area was not strongly correlated with the C-O content of the GO dispersed in water. However, the size-sorted GO nanoplatelets in DMF showed different C-O content, since DMF can reduce GO nanoplatelets during exfoliation and centrifugation processes.
