        The main constituent of green tea, catechins have been reported to have numberous biological activites including antimutagenic, antibacterial, hypocholesterolemic, antioxidant and antitumor properties. In the present study, we examined the protective effect of catechin on UVB-induced skin damage. Catechin (3 mg/mouse) was topically treated to dosal area of SHK-1 hairless mouse daily for 2 weeks. UVB (100 mJ/㎠) was also treated soon after application of catechin alone or with catechin for 2 weeks. Catechin reduced UVB-induced infiltration of inflammatory cells, fibrosis of cells and collagen-fiber formation. In addition, catechin also prevented UVB-induced DNA fragmentation and apoptosis cell number, but not changed p53 level. Furthermore catechin inhibited UVB-induced cell proliferation. There results showed that catechin have preventive effect against UVB-induced skin damages, and these effects could contribute to the antitumor promotors activity.

        본 연구는 자연생태관 조성계획지인 강원도 평창군 용평면 노동리 노동계곡을 대상으로 식생조사를 실시하여 자연생태관 조성에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 수행되었다. 노동계곡의 조사구에서 출현한 관속식물은 총 56과 121속 152종 24변종 2품종이며, 본 조사에서 감소추세종으로 관중과 도깨비부채가, 한국특산종으로 노랑무늬붓꽃이 출현하였다. 식물군락은 자연군락인 신갈나무-당단풍군락과 인공군락인 일본잎갈나무군락, 잣나무군락으로 구분되었으며, 신갈나무-당단풍군

        A survey was conducted to assess the food-purchase behavior of 197 Taejon full time housewives 30 to 49 years of age. Food purchase was assessed using a questionnaire and the resulting data were analyzed using SPSS programs. Demographic data revealed that most of the households have three to five family members and that the Engel Indices of the participating households were mostly between 10 and 30%. Noticeable results of the food purchase assessment are as follows. In the grain and grain products items, the low-education group purchased more rice and barley than the high-education group, whereas the high-education group purchased more glutinous rice, brown rice, bread, macaronis and spaghetti than the low-education group. In the vegetable items, the low-education group purchased more Chinese cabbage and radish than the high-education group, while the high-education group purchased more head lettuce, broccoli and sweet pepper than the low-education group. In the meat items, the beef purchase was higher in the high-education than in the low-education group, while the pork purchase was higher in the low-education than in the high-education group . In the processed meat items, ham was the most favorite purchase item regardless of the education level. In the fish and shellfish items, Pacific cod and Alaska pollack were purchased more in the low-education than in the high-education group, and salmon and dried icefish strip were purchased more in the high-education than in the low-education group. No items in fruit group showed significant differences in the purchase amount between the low-education and the high-education group although the latter purchased more imported-fruits such as melons, kiwis, grapefruits, and oranges. Dairy products such as milk, cheese and butter were purchased more in the high-education than in the low-education group. It was also found that both the number of food items and the consumption of foods coming from animals were higher in the high-education than in the low-education group.

        본 연구는 계룡산국립공원 내의 군산보호구역의 산림식생을 대상으로 식물사회확적 방법으로 산림군락을 분류하고, 각 군락과 입지환경과의 상관관계를 분석하여 계룡산국립공원에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 조사하였다. 계룡산 군산보호구역 내 총 94개 조사구를 분석한 결과, 식물군락은 졸참나무군락(Quercus serra-ta community)과 신갈나무군락(Quercus mongolica community)으로 구분되었다. 졸참나무군락은 해발고가 낮고 경사가 완만한 지역에, 신갈나무군락은 해발고가 높고 경사가 급한 지역에 분포하였다. 졸참나무군락은 하위군락인 때죽나무아군락(Styrax japonica subcommunity)과 소나무아군락(Pinus densiflora subcom-munity)으로 구분되었으며, 신갈나무군락은 하위군락으로 전형아군락(typical subcommunity)과 철쭉꽃아군락(Rhodoendron schlippenbachii scbcommunity)으로 구분되었다.

        PangYak-Happyon(方藥合編) is probably the most widely circulated and highly valued as an indispensable manual of medical prescriptions among the practising Korean herb-doctors since its first publication in 1884. The book was compiled by a man named Hwang Toyon(黃度淵, 1807~1884), who established himself in the nations capital, Seoul, as a practioner in Oriental Medicine for many years and later became very famous for his competence as a doctor. He is known to have served even as the chief attending physician on the reigning monarch, King Kojong. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the structure or composition of the book and evaluate the reliability and effective value as a manual in the medical field. The paper also dealt with the significant role the book has been playing in Korean medical field, even into present day. One of the conclusions the author reached through this study is that the book is so well organized in many ways to serve as the most useful guidance for the doctors, and some of the concrete aspects of the organization is examined in detail in this paper.

        The analysis of hazardous heavy metals, such as Pb, Cd and As, was conducted from the porcelain dinnerwares. Total 374 samples of those products in the domestic market were purchased for the study. All the samples were extracted by 4% acetic acid solution, followed by the analysis with AAS(Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). As a result, Pb and As were detected maximum 8.63 ㎍/ml, 2.58 ㎍/ml, respectively. Cd was found in a sample as 0.10 ㎍/ml.

        To keep enterprise's competitiveness on condition of the automatic manufacturing system such as FA, FMS and CIM, all the maintenance problems should be considered seriously in not only production and maintenance but also related industrial safety. As we analyze in the surveys for the maintenance management of domestic enterprises and the causes of Industrial accident, there will be necessity of drawing up countermeasures for prevention of industrial accidents and for ensuring expertise maintenance technologies. Based on these analyses, this study studied the safety information system, maintenance management information system, and the machinery condition diagnosis technique by using of the knowledge-based system under the internet environment. This web based knowledge-based diagnosis system can easily provide not only the knowledge of expert about deterioration phenomenon of industrial robot, but also the knowledge of relating safety and facility on everywhere, everytime. Therefore, when we use this system, it is expected to improve the efficiency of business processes in the production and safety.

        A survey was conducted to examine the effect of food irradiation education on college students' knowledge and acceptance of food irradiation. The instrument for the knowledge and acceptance of food irradiation was administered before and after food irradiation education, to 150 students majoring in food and nutrition or food technology in the Chungnam National University. Before the education approximately 93% of the respondents did not know that radioactivity dose not remain in food after irradiation; whereas, after education half of them thought that radioactivity dose not remain in irradiated food. Knowledge about food irradiation has improved through education. The education significantly increased all the mean scores of need for food irradiation and willingness to use irradiated foods for the six food groups (p<0.01). The education significantly decreased the mean scores of concern about the irradiated food for all the six food groups (p<0.01). Although the responses to irradiated foods are, in general, negative or neutral even after education, the mean scores of acceptance of the irradiated foods have improved through education in all the six food groups (p<0.01). In conclusion, this study showed that food irradiation education may positively affect the college students' knowledge and acceptance of food irradiation, and that the development of both the appropriate detection methods to identify irradiated foods and the education programs to enlighten the college students are needed.

        A survey was conducted to examine the knowledge and acceptance of food irradiation in order to provide baseline data required in the development of food irradiation education programs for college students. 150 students majoring in food and nutrition or food technology in the Chungnam National University were chosen for a survey. The results are as follows. First, college students' knowledge about food irradiation is scanty. Knowledge assessment showed that 56% of the participants had previously heard of food irradiation. 68% of the respondents thought that radioactivity remains in food after irradiation and 25.3% of them were not sure whether radioactivity remains in food after irradiation or not. Only half of the respondents thought that nutrient loss due to irradiation is equal to or lower than that due to cooking or freezing. Second, approximately 56% of the respondents showed that food irradiation is somewhat or strongly needed for meat or fish; whereas, over 60% of them showed that food irradiation is not needed for grain, vegetable and fruit. Almost 40% of the respondents were seriously concerned about irradiation of vegetables and fruits; whereas, they showed less concern about spice irradiation. More than half of the respondents were not willing to use irradiated food in all the six food groups. Third, the correlation analysis showed that the need of food irradiation is negatively correlated with concerning about the irradiated fish and fruits, but positively correlated with willingness to use irradiated food in all the five food groups, except in spices. Concern about the irradiated food is negatively correlated with willingness to use irradiated food from all the six food groups. Fourth, almost all the respondents (over 90%) agreed that the irradiated food labeling is required as well as the development of proper methods to identify irradiated foods.

        본 연구는 울릉도 성인봉 주변에 생육하고 있는 너도밤나무군락의 섬조릿대하위군락, 전형하위군락, 일색고사리하위군락에 대한 토양단면 및 토양의 이화학적 특성을 조사하여 울릉도 산림토양의 기초자료를 제공하고, 하위군락별 토양특성의 차이를 조사하기 위해 실시되었다. 하위군락별 토양단면의 형태는 하위군락간에 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다. 하위군락간 토양의 이화학적 요인분석에 있어서 0-10cm 토양 깊이에서 Ca함량에서만 유의적인 차이가 나타났을 뿐, 다른 요인들은

        A amylase producing bacteria were isolated from tofu residue and identified as Bacillus sp. according to the morphological and biochemical properties, which were named Bacillus sp. GM7330 and Bacillus sp. GM7312. The cultural condition for the production of amylase was showed on 5% tofu residue added 3% glucose and 0.15% yeast extract. And incubated during 72 hrs at 30℃, Bacillus sp. GM7330 and Bacillus sp. GM7312 were producing amylase of 488 units and 341 units.

        Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to detect irradiated chicken eggs, to investigate the effect of irradiation dose on the ESR signal intensity and to identify the stability of radicals under 77 days of storage. Raw chicken eggs were irradiated with doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 5 kGy at room temperature using a Co-60 irradiator. The samples were prepared by separating, drying and powdering shells from the raw eggs. The irradiated chicken egg shells presented an asymmetric absorption in shape at g₁=2.0023±0.00004 and g₂=1.9979±0.00005, different from the non-irradiated ones. The strength of the ESR signal increased linearly with the applied doses (to 5 kGy). The intensity of the ESR signals after irradiation were stable even after 77-day of storage at 5℃ and/or room temperature.

        This paper is to study population ecological characteristics, including growth parameters, survival rate, instantaneous coefficients of natural and fishing mortalities, and age at first capture of the soft-shelled clam, Mya japonioa in the intertidal zone of South Sea in Korea. For describing growth of the clam a von Bertalanffy growth model was adopted, The von Bertalanffy growth curve had an additive error structure and the growth parameters estimated from a non-linear regression were SH<SUB>∞</SUB>=79.83mm, K=0.26, and t<SUB>0</SUB>= -0.01. Survival rate (S) of the soft-shelled clam was 0.26 (SD=0.02). The instantaneous coefficients of natural mortality (M) was estimated to be 0.78/year and fishing mortality (F) 0.57/year for the soft-shelled clam. The age at first capture (t<SUB>c</SUB>) was estimated as 2.69 year. The mean densities of the soft-shelled clam by bottom type were 3.40 inds./m²(SE=0.18) in the sand, 63.4 inds./m²(SE= 0.53) in the muddy sand, and 0 inds./m2 (SE=0) in the gravelly sand. The mean densities of the soft-shelled clam by 3 different areas were 4.88 inds./m²(SE=0.09), 2.61 inds./m²(SE=0.13), 7.20 inds./m²(SE=0.18), respectively and the biomass of the clam were estimated as 131mt, 121mt, 665mt, respectively. An yield-per-recruit analysis showed that the current yield-per-recruit of about 8.30g with F=0.57/year and the age at first capture (t<SUB>c</SUB>) 2.69 year, was lower than the maximum possible yield-per-recruit of 9.60g. Fixing to at the current level and increased fishing intensity (F) could produce an increase in the predicted yield-per-recruit from 8.30g to about 9.40. However, estimated yield-per-recruit increased to 1.30g by decreasing to from the current age (2.69 year) to age two with F fixed at the current level. Yield-per-recruit was estimated under harvest strategies based on F<SUB>max</SUB> and F<SUB>0.1</SUB>.
