For decontamination and quantification of trace amount of tritium in water, an efficient separation technology capable of enriching tritium in water is required. Electrolysis is a key technology for tritium enichment as it has a high H/T and D/T separation factors. To separate tritium, it is important to develop a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer having high hydrogen isotope separation factor as well as high electrolyzer cell efficiency. However, there has not been sufficient research on the separation factor and cell efficiency according to the composition and manufacturing method of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) Therefore, it is necessary to study the optimal composition and manufacturing method of the MEA in PEM electrolyzer. In this study, the H/D separation factor and water electrolysis cell efficiency of PEM electrolyzer were analyzed by changing the anode and cathode materials and electrode deposition method of the MEA. After the water electrolysis experiment using deionized water, the D/H ratio in water and hydrogen gas was measured using a cavity ring down spectrometer and a mass spectrometer, respectively, and the separation factor was calculated. To calculate the cell efficiency of water electrolysis, a polarization curves were obtained by measuring the voltage changes while increasing the current density. As a result of the study, the water electrolyzer cell efficiency of the MEA fabricated with different anode/cathode configurations and electrode formation methods was higher than that of commercial MEA. On the other hand, the difference in H/D separation factor was not significant depending on the MEA fabrication methods. Therefore, using a cell with high cell efficiency when the separation factor is the same will help construct a more efficient water electrolysis system by lowering the voltage required for water electrolysis.

Concrete decontamination tools capable of removing the nuclear contaminated surface are necessary to minimize the amount of concrete waste generated in the process of decontamination and dismantling of nuclear power plants. Laser scabbling is a decontamination technique that removes the contaminated surface layers concrete surface by inducing internal explosion. The application principle of laser scabbling technology uses the porous nature of concrete including moisture. When high thermal energy is applied to the concrete surface, an explosion at pores is induced along with an increase in water vapor pressure. High-powered laser beam can be an effective induction source of local explosive spalling on concrete surface. In this study, the scabbling test using a 5 kW highpowered fiber laser was conducted on the concrete blocks to establish the optimal conditions for surface decontamination. It was also measured the volume peeled off the concrete surface under the conditions of two different laser head speeds. Furthermore, we tested the removal efficiency of radioactive concrete particles generated during high-power fiber laser scabbling process. A 5 kW laser beam was applied to the concrete surface at two different laser head speeds - 120 mm/min and 600 mm/min. The laser beam repeatedly moved 200 mm horizontally and 40 mm vertically within the concrete block. The amount of surface concrete removed from concrete block was calculated from the measurement of the volume and mean depth using a 3D scanner device (laser-probed Global Advantage 9.12.8(HEXAGON)) for the two different the laser head speeds. By increasing the laser head speed, less explosive spalling occurred due to shorter contact time of the laser beam with the concrete. The laser head speed of 600 mm/min reduced about 89% of the waste generated by shallow depth of scabbling as compared to the waste generated at the laser head speed of 120 mm/min. The fiber laser scabbling system was developed for surface decontamination of radioactive concrete in nuclear power plants. Tests were performed to find the optimum parameters to reduce the generation of particulate waste from the contaminated concrete surface by controlling the laser head speeds. It was confirmed that the wastes from surface decontamination was reduced up to 89% by increasing laser head speed from 120 mm/min to 600 mm/min. It was also observed that the cylindrical tube effectively vacuumed the debris generated by the explosive spalling into the collector. Removal efficiencies of concrete particles were measured greater than 99.9% with ring blower power of 650 air watt of the filter system.

The physicochemical similarities of hydrogen isotopes have made their separation a challenging task. Conventional methods such as cryogenic distillation, Girdler sulfide process, chromatography, and thermal cycling absorption have low separation factors and are energy-intensive. To overcome these limitations, research has focused on kinetic quantum sieving (KQS) and chemical affinity quantum sieving (CAQS) effects for selective separation of hydrogen isotopes. Porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOF), covalent organic frameworks (COF), zeolites, carbon, and organic cages have been studied for hydrogen separation. This study have the literature review for previous research on D2/H2 adsorption and analyzes the D2/H2 adsorption behaviors of hydrogen isotopes for various zeolite using BET at 77 K. The study predicts the D2/H2 adsorption selectivity based on the results obtained with BET. These hydrogen isotope adsorption fundamentals provide a foundation for future processes for tritium separation.

The mobility of radionuclides is largely determined by their radiological properties, geochemical conditions, and adsorption reactions, such as surface adsorption, chemical precipitation, and ion exchange. To evaluate the safety assessments of radionuclides in nuclear sites, it is essential to understand the behavior and mechanism of radionuclides onto soils. Since nuclear power plants are located in coastal areas, the chemical composition of groundwater can vary depending on the intrusion of seawater, altering the adsorption distribution coefficient (Kd) values of radionuclides. This study examines the impact of seawater on the Kd values of clay minerals for cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr). The results of Cs+ adsorption experiments showed a broad range of Kd values from 36 to 1,820 mL/g at an initial concentration of 1 mg/L and a high sorption coefficient of 15-613 mL/g at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L. Montmorillonite, hydrobiotite, illite, and kaolinite were ranked in terms of their CEC values for Cs+ adsorption, with hydrobiotite having the highest adsorption at 1 mg/L. The results of Sr adsorption experiments showed a wide range of Kd values from 82 to 1,209 mL/g at an initial concentration of 1 mg/L and a lower adsorption coefficient of 6.68-344 mL/g at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L. Both Cs+ and Sr2+ demonstrated lower Kd values at higher initial concentrations. CEC of clays found to have a significant impact on Sr2+ Kd values. Ca2+ ions showed a significant impact on Sr2+ adsorption distribution coefficients, demonstrating the greater impact of seawater on Sr2+ compared to Cs+. These findings can inform future safety assessments of radionuclides in nuclear sites.

The removal of cesium (Cs) from contaminated clay minerals is still a challenge due to the limited efficiency of the process. Thus, this study aimed to enhance the removal for Cs+ ions during the conventional acid washing process by incorporating a bead-type adsorbent. Polyacrylonitrile-based nickel potassium hexacyanoferrate (NiFC-PAN) was utilized as the Cs adsorbent to selectively adsorb Cs+ ions in a strongly acidic solution that contained competing ions. To enable easy separation of clay particles and protect the adsorbent from harsh environmental conditions, PAN was deliberately constructed as large beads. The synthesized adsorbent (NiFC/PAN in a 2:1 ratio) displayed high selectivity for Cs+ ions and had a maximum capacity of 162.78 mg/g for Cs+ adsorption in 0.5 M HNO3 solution. Since NiFC-PAN exhibited greater Cs selectivity than the clay mineral (hydrobiotite, HBT), adding NiFC-PAN during the acid washing substantially increased Cs desorption (73.3%) by preventing the re-adsorption for Cs+ ions on the HBT. The acid treatment in the presence of NiFCPAN also significantly decreased the radioactivity of 137Cs-HBT from 209 to 27 Bq/g, resulting in a desorption efficiency of 87.1%. Therefore, these findings suggest that the proposed technique is a potentially useful and effective method for decontaminating radioactive clay.

The homogeneity of radioactive spent ion exchange resins (IERs) distribution inside waste form is one of the important characteristics for acceptance of waste forms in long-term storage because heterogenous immobilization can lead to the poor structural stability of waste form. In this study, the homogeneity of metakaolin-based geopolymer waste form containing simulant IERs was evaluated using a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and statistical approach. The cation-anion mixed IERs (IRN150) were used to prepare the simulant spent IERs contaminated by non-radioactive Cs, Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni, Co, and Sr (0.44, 8.03, 6.22, 4.21, 4.66, 0.48, and 0.90 mg/g-dried IER, respectively). The K2SiO3 solution to metakaolin ratio was kept constant at 1.2 and spent IERs loading was 5wt%. For the synthesis of homogeneous geopolymer waste form, spent IERs were mixed with K2SiO3 solution and metakaolin first, and then the fresh mixture slurry was poured into plastic molds (diameter: 2.9 cm and height: 6.0 cm). The heterogeneous geopolymer waste form was also fabricated by stacking two kinds of mixtures (8wt% IERs loading in bottom and 2wt% in top) in one mold. Geopolymers were cured for 7d (1d at room temperature and 6d at 60°C). The hardened geopolymers were cut into top, middle, and bottom parts. The LIBS spectra and intensities for Cs were obtained from the top and bottom of each part. Cs was selected for target nuclide because of its good sensitivity for measurement. Shapiro-Wilk test was performed to determine the normality of LIBS data, and it revealed that data from the homogeneous sample is normal distribution (p-value = 0.9246, if p-value is higher than 0.05, it is considered as normal distribution). However, data from the heterogeneous sample showed abnormal distribution (p-value = 7.765×10-8). The coefficient of variation (CoV) was also calculated to examine the dispersion of data. It was 31.3% and 51.8% from homogeneous and heterogeneous samples, respectively. These results suggest that LIBS analysis and statistical approaches can be used to evaluate the homogeneity of waste forms for the acceptance criterion in repositories.

Domestic NPPs had produced the paraffin-solidifying concentrate waste (PSCW) for nearly 20 years. At that time radioactive waste management policy of KHNP was to reduce the volume and to store safely in site. The PSCW has been identified not to meet the leaching index after introducing the treatment system. PSCW has to be treated to meet current waste acceptance criteria (WAC) for permanent disposal. PSCW consists of dried concentrate 75% and paraffin 25% of volume. When PSCW is separated into a dried concentrate and a paraffin by solubility, total volume separated is increased twice. Final disposal volume of dried concentrate can reach to several times when solidifying by cement even considering exemption. Application of polymer solidification technology is difficult because dried concentrate is hard to make form to pellet. When PSCW is packaged in High Integrity Container (HIC), volume of PSCW is equal to the volume before package. The packaging process of HIC is simple and is no necessary of large equipment. It is important to recognize that HIC was developed to replace solidification of waste. HIC has as design goal a minimum lifetime of 300 years under disposal environment. The HIC is designed to maintain its structural integrity over this period, to consider the corrosive and chemical effects of both the waste contents and the disposal environment, to have sufficient mechanical strength to withstand loads on the container and to be capable of meeting the requirements for a Type A transport Package. The Final waste form is required for facilitating handling and providing protection of personnel in relation to solidification, explosive decomposition, toxic gases, hazardous material, etc. Structural stability of final waste form is required also. Structural stability of the waste can be provided by the waste itself, solidifying or placing in HIC. Final waste form ensure that the waste does not structurally degrade and affect overall stability of the disposal site. The HIC package contained PSCW was reviewed from several points of view such as physicochemical, radiological and structural safety according to domestic WAC. The result of reviewing shows that it has not found any violation of WCP established for silo type disposal facility in Gyeongju city.

A deep geological repository for disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) consists of the canister, buffer material, and natural rock. If radionuclides leak from a disposal container, it can pass through buffer materials and rock, and move into the biosphere. Transport and migration of radionuclides in the rock differently were affected by the fracture type, filling minerals in the fracture, and the chemical and hydraulic properties of the groundwater. In this study, aperture distribution in fractured granite block was investigated by hydraulic test and CFD analysis. The fractured rock block (1 m × 0.6 m × 0.6 m), which is simulated as natural barrier, was prepared from Iksan, Jeollabuk-do. 9 test holes were drilled and packer system was installed to perform hydraulic test at the surface of fracture. 3D model simulated for aperture distribution of rock block was made using results of hydraulic test. And then, CFD analysis was performed to evaluate the co-relation between experiment results and analysis results using FLUENT code.

Bentonite is a potential buffer material of multi-barrier systems in high-level radioactive wastes repository. Montmorillonite, the main constituent of the bentonite, is 2:1 type aluminosilicate clay mineral with high swelling capacity and low permeability. Montmorillonite alteration under alkaline and saline conditions may affect the physico-chemical properties of the bentonite buffer. In this study, montmorillonite alteration by interaction with synthetic alkaline and saline solution and its retention capacity for cesium and iodide were investigated. The experiments were performed in three different batches (Milli-Q water, alkaline water, and saline water) doped with cesium and iodide for 7 days. Alteration characteristics and nuclide retention capacity of original- and reacted bentonite was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) analysis. From the results, cesium retention occurred differently depending on the presence of competing ions such as K, Na, and Mg ions in synthetic solutions, while iodide was negligibly removed by bentonite. Montmorillonite alteration mainly occurred as cation exchange and zeolite minerals such as merlinoite and mordenite were new-formed during alkaline alteration of the montmorillonite. CEC value of reacted bentonite increased by formation of the zeolite minerals under alkaline conditions.

For Korean nuclear fuel cycle project, it is necessary to design and evaluate the integrity of spent fuel storage. For the design and evaluation of spent fuel storage, it is necessary to evaluate the properties of various materials used in spent fuel storage. The materials previously considered in the design of nuclear power plants were limited to static properties and were listed in design and manufacturing code and standards. However, for the evaluation of the storage containers in scenarios such as transportation and events, dynamic material property evaluations are required. Research on the dynamic properties of materials is generally conducted in the fields of automotive and aerospace, and most of the studies are on metal materials under sheet conditions. Since the structural materials of the storage containers for used nuclear fuel are mostly composed of thick materials, consideration should be given to property evaluation methodology and quantitative comparison. In this study, the mechanical properties of stainless steel material with canister application were evaluated according to the strain rate, and the crack resistance evaluation was also performed. It was confirmed the changes in strength and crack resistance according to the increase in strain rate and observed differences in microstructural hardening behavior.

Background: The gluteus maximus (GM) muscle comprise the lumbo-pelvic complex and is an important stabilizing muscle during leg extension. In patients with low back pain (LBP) with weakness of the GM, spine leads to compensatory muscle activities such as instantaneous increase of the erector spinae (ES) muscle activity. Four-point kneeling arm and leg lift (FKALL) is most common types of lumbopelvic and GM muscles strengthening exercise. We assumed that altered hip position during FKALL may increase thoraco-lumbar stabilizer like GM activity more effectively method. Objects: The purpose of this study was investigated that effects of the three exercise postures on the right-sided GM, internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), and multifidus (MF) muscle activities and pelvic kinematic during FKALL. Methods: Twenty eight healthy individuals participated in this study. The exercises were performed three conditions of FKALL (pure FKALL, FKALL with 120° hip flexion of the supporting leg, FKALL with 30° hip abduction of the lifted leg). Participants performed FKALL exercises three times each condition, and motion sensor used to measure pelvic tilt and rotation angle. Results: This study demonstrated that no significant change in pelvic angle during hip movement in the FKALL (p > 0.05). However, the MF and GM muscle activities in FKALL with hip flexion and hip abduction is greater than pure FKALL position (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our finding suggests that change the posture of the hip joint to facilitate GM muscle activation during trunk stabilization exercises such as the FKALL.
