        The Japanese termite, Reticulitermes speratus Kolbe, is distributed in Korea widely. Although, termites are not currently a great problem in Korea, it might be increased commercial losses from imported timber. Phosphine (PH3) is very effective fumigant and is widely used to control pests. Oxygen treatment was found to enhance phosphine toxicity and reduce fumigation time against various life stage of insects. In this study, we determined efficacy of oxygenated phosphine fumigation for controlling R. speratus. Fumigation to adults of R. speratus was carried in a desiccator system at 20.9% (normal), 50% and 80% of oxygen concentration for 24 h. Fumigations under higher oxygen levels greatly increased phosphine toxicity to R. speratus. Mortality of termite was increased 15.0% and 16.2% in the 50.0% and 80.0% oxygen concentration with 0.25 mg L-1 phosphine at 5℃, respectively. 100% mortality was determined in 80.0% oxygen concentration with 0.5 mg L-1 phosphine at 5℃. Oxygenated phosphine fumigations have marked potential to improve insecticidal efficacy against R. speratus. These results merit further study as potential fumigant for control of wood destroying pests.

        Methyl bromide (MB) has been banned by Montreal Protocol due to ozone depletion in developed countries since 2005 but uses for quarantine & pre-shipment (QPS) remains exemption. Current MB alternatives such as phosphine gas, ethyl formate has been showing their potential in terms of their no phytotoxic damages to target perishable commodities post fumigation as well as their efficacy at low temperature. We evaluated phosphine (PH3) gas as MB alternatives welsh onion, carrot, and lettuce fumigation. on sensitivity test, larvae of Aphis gossypii were most tolerant to PH3 among the all stage of A. gossypii, Tetranychus urticae and Plutella xylostella. The LC99 and LCT99 value of mixture gas for adult of A. gossypii was 1.79 mg/L (24hr, 5℃) and 33.56 mg h/L(5℃), respectively. On confirmation trials scheduled in 28m3 container for 24hr at 5℃, all stages of T. urticae was completely controlled in 2g/㎥ of phosphine gas, but A. gossypii and M. persicae were not completely controled. No phytotoxic damage was observed in vegetables.

        Termites are a major problem for home and business owners around the world. Termites gnaw through wood and burrow under the foundations of buildings causing a great deal of damage to the structure of the building. Phosphine (PH3) is very effective fumigant and is widely used to control pests. PH3 rapidly penetrate through treated material, so it replaced many conventional fumigants for treatment of durable materials. In this study, we have investigated the effectiveness of PH3 fumigation on wood pests, Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis. We evaluated two bioassay methods; wooden cube (10×10×10 cm) and insect breeding dish in comparison with effectiveness of PH3 penetrations into the timber block. Fumigation to adults of R. speratus was carried in a desiccator system for 24 h at 5 and 15℃. As a result, LC99 of PH3 to R. speratus in wooden cubes and insect breeding dish at 5℃ was 0.183 and 0.177 mg L-1, respectively. LC99 of PH3 in wooden cubes and insect breeding dish at 15℃ was 0.077 and 0.078 mg L-1, respectively. There were no significant differences between the two bioassay methods. Thess results indicate that PH3 described herein merit further study as potential fumigants for termite control.

However, MB has been phasing out and under control in many countries because it is listed as an ozone-depleting substance under the Montreal Protocol. In this study, we have investigated the effectiveness of phosphine fumigation on wood pests for developing an MB alternatives. We evaluated two bioassay methods; wooden cube (10×10×10 cm) and normal fumigation procedures in comparison with effectiveness of phosphine (PH3) penetrations into the timber block. Fumigation to adults of Reticulitermes speratus was carried in a desiccator system for 24hr at 5 and 15 ℃. As a result, LC99 of PH3 to R. speratus in wooden cubes and insect breeding dish at 5℃ was 0.183 and 0.177 mg L-1, respectively.         With the increasing trend of global trades and protection of agro-ecosystem in importing and exporting countries against quarantine pest, quarantine and pre-shipment(QPS) fumigation in perishable commodites like strawberry is critical in terms of quality maintenance of fumigated commodites. Currently, there are limited use of MB fumigation on fruits and vegetables due to low temperature storage and phytotoxic effect or damage in postharvest qualities in many commodites. In this paper, efficacy and quality accessment of methyl bromide(MB) alternatives, ethyl formate and phosphine gas are presented for export strawberry. Efficacy of phosphine gas and ethyl formate are described in terms of concentration × time (CT) products to Frankliniella occidentalis, Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae.

        본 연구에서는 딸기의 냉장 및 상온 저장 시 일반세균, pH, color, firmness 등의 품질특성에 있 어 염수 세척에 따른 영향을 분석하였다. 시료는 세척하지 않은 대조구, 염수세척 시료구, 염수세척 후 물기제거한 시료구 세 가지 종류로 준비하였다. 일반세균의 경우 염수세척 후 물기제거한 경우 에 염수세척 시료구와 비세척 대조구에 비해 세균수가 저감화되었으며, 대수증식기가 나타나지 않 았다. pH의 경우, 비세척 대조구와 염수세척 시료구에서는 다소 감소했으나, 염수세척 후 물기를 제거한 시료구에서는 거의 변화가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 적색도는 비세척 대조구와 염수세척 후 물기제거 시료구에서 저장기간이 경과함에 따라 증가되었으나, 염수세척 시료구에서는 감소되었다. 경도의 경우 4℃에서 저장했을 때, 저장 간에 큰 변화를 보이지 않았다. 결론적으로 딸기를 염수세 척하여 물기를 제거할 경우, 저장기간을 크게 연장할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

        Vapormate™, a new gas formulation of ethyl formate (EF) with carbon dioxide, is an alternative fumigant to methyl bromide (MB). The efficacy of the vapormate fumigation was evaluated on an acaricide susceptible and resistant Tetranychus urticae strains. A resistant strain showed resistance ratio (RR) of 21.9 and 379.6 to acrinathrin and chlorfenapyr, respectively. Fumigation was done in desiccators (6.8 L) which were empty or filled 30% in space with paprika for 6 h at 15℃ in the laboratory. The concentration adopted were 9.6, 17.2, 24.5, 36.4 mg/L in empty desiccator and 10.2, 17.9, 24.9, 35.2 mg/L in paprika-filled desiccator. In empty desiccator, susceptible and resistance T. urticae showed 100% mortality at higher concentration than 17.2 and 24.5 mg/L, respectively. In paprika-filled desiccator, susceptible and resistance T. urticae showed 100% mortality at higher concentration than 24.9 and 35.2 mg/L, respectively. Hatchability was greatly reduced by the fumigation. Hatchability was 3.7% in the empty desiccator at 9.6 mg/L and 37.2% in the paprika-filled desiccator at 10.2 mg/L.

        Methyl bromide (MB) has been banned by Montreal Protocol due to ozone depletion in developed countries since 2005 but uses for quarantine & pre-shipment (QPS) remains exemption due to no appropriate alternatives yet available. However, in 2010, the prohibition of QPS in European Union(EU) will be expected to phase out MB worldwide use. There is an inevitable need for MB alternatives technology. Also, other consumer's demand in QPS is that MB has damaging effect to the quality of highly valuable fresh products: some fruits, vegetables and mostly cut flowers. We evaluated 2% of phosphine(PH3) and 98% of CO2 mixtures as MB alternative in export cut flower fumigation. On sensitivity test, larvae of Aphis gossypii were most tolerant to PH3 fumigation in all stage of A. gossypii, Tetranychus urticae and Frankliniella occidentalis. The LC99 and LCT99 value of mixture gas for larvae of A. gossypii was 55 mg/L (24hr, 15℃) and 1,224 mgh/L(15℃), respectively. On confirmation trials scheduled in 28m3 container, all stages of A. gossypii, T. urticae, and F. occidentalis were completely controlled in 100g/㎥ of mixture gas for 24hrs at 8℃, and no damage was observed in roses, chrysanthemums, and lilies. The PH3 and CO2 mixture technology in cut flowers fumigation and their application will plays an practically important roles in further MB replacement strategy in Korea.

        VapormateTM, the new gas formation of ethyl formate(EF) with carbon dioxide, is an MB(methyl bromide) alternative fumigant for grains and perishable commodities especially to control quarantine pest. To gain systematic efficacies of VapormateTM, vaporized gases in Tedlar bag were collected from liquefied gases in cylinder. Vaporized gases were used for collecting efficacy data to Tetranychus urticae, two-spotted spider mite, for 6hr at 26± 1℃. When applied 25, 51, 77 and 102 ml/L of vaporized gas for 6hr, mortality of T. urticae female adult were 83.3, 97.8, 100, and 100%, respectively, at 24hr after fumigation. Also, at 77 and 102 ml/L of vaporized gas for 4hr treatment at 26± 1℃, the mortality of T. urticae female was 96.7 and 97.8%, respectively. This preliminary result may help to understand further scaled-up VapormateTM fumigation applied with different type of commodities.

        This study was carried out to investigate the correlation between toluene in air and hippuric acid in human urine, which is based in the results of the health check-in and measure of working environment, was investigated for five years. Toluene in air and hippuric acid in urine were checked 116 workers who exposed to toluene in five type of industry. The Mean concentration of toluene in air by type of industry and every year and sex distinction, had positive correlation.(p<0.01) The Mean concentration of hippuric acid in urine by type of industry, every year, sex distinction, disparity of age and term of duty had positive correlation.(p<0.01)

        The well-mixed room model has been traditionally used to predict the concentrations of contaminants in indoor environments. However, this is inappropriate because the flow fields in many indoor environments distribute contaminants non-uniformly, due to imperfect air mixing. Thus, some means used to describe an imperfectly mixed room are needed. The simplest model that accounts for imperfect air mixing is a two-zone model. Therefore, this study on development of computer program for the two-zone model is carried out to propose techniques of estimating the concentration of contaminants in the room. To do this, an important consideration is to divide a room into two-zone, i.e. the lower and upper zone assuming that the air and contaminants are well mixed within each zone. And between the zones the air recirculation is characterized through the air exchange parameter. By this basic assumption, the equations for the conservation of mass are derived for each zone. These equations are solved by using the computational technique. The language used to develope the program is a VISUAL BASIC. The value of air exchange coefficient(f_12) is the most difficult to forecast when the concentrations of contaminants in an imperfectly mixed room are estimated by the two-zone model. But, as the value of f_12 increases, the air exchange between each zone increases. When the value of f_l2, is approximately 15, the concentrations in both zone approach each other, and the entire room may be approximately treated as a single well-mixed room. Therefore, this study is available for designing of the ventilation to improve the air quality of indoor environments. Also, the two-zone model produces the theoretical base which may be extended to the theory for the multi-zone model, that will be contributed to estimate the air pollution in large enclosures, such as shopping malls, atria buildings, airport terminals, and covered sports stadia.

        We tried to develope a desulfurization sorbent using eggshell for recycling, practicability, and economic development. The calcination character of the eggshell was examined by thermal gravimetric analysis and qualitative-quantitative character by X-ray diffractometer(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM). The calcination was occurred easily in the case of eggshell and its form was changed from calcite(CaCO_3) to lime(CaO). The grain and pore sizes of the calcined sample after base-treatment were larger and more crystallic. The adsorption ability of the eggshell was two- to six-times in the calcination temperature more than in the grain size. Therefore, the eggshell was thought to be usable as the desulfurization sorbent.
