        This study analyzed the condition of marine accident and disaster rate of crew of Korean fishing vessels by vessel type, and checked the Australian safety management system and relevant regulation in Korea to suggest measures to build coastal/offshore fishing vessel safety management system in Korean coastal/offshore fishery. As a result, the power and production amount of Korean coastal/offshore fishing vessel is consistently decreasing while marine accident is increasing. Disaster rate of crew was higher than land industry, especially, the disaster rate of coastal/offshore fishing vessel was very high (100.0‰). Australia applies safety management system differed by vessel type and operation waters which fully considers the characteristics of pertinent vessel. The average accident rate of fishing vessels with gross tonnage over 20 tons among the Korean coastal/offshore fishing vessel was 13.6%, which was significantly higher than fishing vessels with gross tonnage below 20 tons (1.4%). Such result indicates it is urgent to implement safety management system to fishing vessel with gross tonnage over 20 tons and introduce fishing vessel safety supervisor. Establishing safety management system of coastal/offshore fishing vessel will contribute to consistent industrial development by achieving the general goal of reducing marine accident and spreading safety culture.

        This study was conducted in order to improve opening efficiency of the miniaturized large-scale net for anchovy boat seine gear to reduce the fleet size. Field experiments were performed to observe geometry of nets by catcher boats. When the distances between the two ships were 150, 300 and 450 m, and the speeds of towing nets were 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2 k't, respectively. The vertical opening and actual opening of each part of the miniaturized large-scale net was as follows: the front part of the wing net, 8.7-13.3 m, 51-78%; the middle part of the wing net, 28.1-34.2 m, 55-67%; the entrance of the inside wing net, 31.3-38.5 m, 60-73%; the square and bosom, 22.7-29.6 m, 47-62%; the entrance of the body net, 20.9-26.4 m, 42-52%; the entrance of the bag net, 17.2-21 m, 72-89%; the flapper, 13.2-15.3 m, 78-83%; and the end of the bag net, 13.2-15.7 m, 72-75%. By connecting the net pendants with the front part of the wing net, the opening of the front part of the wing net was significantly improved compared to the traditional gear, which ensured both the wing net and the inside wing net with a normal net height. This, in turn, increased the efficiency of herding. The height of the body and bag nets was also higher than that of the tradition gear. In particular, the body net attached to the gear significantly improved the pocket shape of the gear and reduced the number of fish that were caught and escaped from the bag net, which increased the rate of fishing. The tension of towing nets was measured approximately between 2,958 and 7,110 kg, which indicates that the fleet can tow nets with 350 ps, the standard engine horse power. The fishing operation time was shortened compared with of the existent net, and the large-scale buoy attachment operation was also possible to operate the ship without fish detecting boat.

        This study was conducted in order to improve fishing gear for existent net of the anchovy boat seine. Field experiments were performed to observe geometry of nets by catcher boats. When the distances between the two ships were 100, 300, and 500 m, and the speeds of towing nets were 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2 k't, respectively. The vertical opening and actual opening of each part of the existent net was as follows: the middle part of the wing net, 12.9-26.6 m, 19-39%; the entrance of the inside wing net, 23.3-35.3 m, 40-60%; the square and bosom, 18.4-24.2 m, 37-49%; the entrance of the bag net, 19.0-23.3 m, 79-96%; the flapper, 13.2-15.3 m, 142-161%; and the end of the bag net, 13.2-15.7 m, 51-61%. The actual net opening of each part of the existent nets used in this study was lower than that of the design net height, due to the low net height of the wing net and the inside wing net, it limited a range of the net height of the square and bosom. The opening of the entrance of the bag net caused the net pocket shape and inflated some parts of the nets. The tension of towing nets was measured between 4.4 and 11.0 tons, and it is necessary to reduce the structure and improve the structure of the bag net.

        We study the operation of a lunisolar calendar in Korea and its time data calculation method. The dates based on the lunisolar calendar have been conventionally used in Korea after the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1896. With the Astronomy Act enacted in 2010, the lunisolar calendar is presently being used as an official calendar along with the Gregorian calendar. However, no institutionalized regulations have been provided on the time data calculation method by the lunisolar calendar. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute very recently established the regulations on the lunisolar calendar operation in Korea. We introduce the regulations together with historical substances and analyze the time data calculated according to the regulations for 600 years from 1901 to 2500. From our study, we find that the value of ΔT (i.e., the difference between the terrestrial time and the universal time) is the most critical parameter causing uncertainty on the data. We also find that all new Moon days in the almanacs agree with our calculations since 1912. Meanwhile, we find that new Moon and winter solstice times are found to be very close to midnight in 38 and five cases, respectively. For instance, the new Moon time on January 14, 2097 is 0 h 0 min 8 s. In this case, deciding the first day (i.e., new moon day) in a lunar month is difficult because of the large uncertainty in the value of ΔT. Regarding with a lunar leap month, we find that the rules of inserting the leap month do not apply for 17 years. In conclusion, we believe that our findings are helpful in determining calendar days by using the lunisolar calendar.

        국내에서 육성된 중생종 동양배 품종인 ‘창조’는 성숙 기간 중 지속적으로 과실이 비대하여 600g대의 편원형 과실로 발달하였다. 성숙기간 중 경도는 경시적으로 저하되어 만개 후 153일인 9월 13일에 32.58N으로 조사되었고 만개 후 160일에는 26.44N으로 급격히 경도가 저하되었다. 식감과 관련된 품질요인 중 과실의 전분함 량은 만개 후 153일에 0.737, 만개 후 160일에 0.451로 전분함량이 급속히 감소하였고, 과육의 세포벽함량을 조사하였던 결과, 과실비대가 증가하고 과실성숙의 진행과 더불어 알코올불용성물질 함량은 낮아지는 경향을 보였다. 과피색차 중 적색도(a*)는 만개 후 139일 이후 양의 값을 보여 외관상의 과피녹색 발현이 소실되었는데 과피의 SPAD 값을 조사한 결과에서도 동일하게 엽록소의 감소를 확인할 수 있었다. Hue angle 역시 성숙과 연화 기간 중 유의하게 감소하는 경향을 보여 수확시기의 지 표로 활용 가능하다고 판단되었다. 성숙기간 중 과육 내에 축적되는 당 성분을 분석한 결과, 만개 후 153일에 총량이 최대치를 보였는데 전 생육시기에 걸쳐 전체 당 성분 중 과당이 우점하고 있었고, 과실성숙도가 높아질 수록 자당의 비율이 유의하게 증가하여 만개 후 160일 에 수확한 과실에서는 자당이 과당을 넘어 우점하여 과숙단계로 생각되었다. 따라서, 배 신품종 ‘창조’의 적정 수확시기는 만개 후 153일인 9월 13일 이전으로 평가되었고 수확시기를 놓친 경우에는 경도 등 과실의 품질이 급격하게 하락하는 것으로 사료되었다. 대만 지역 수출 을 모의하여 단기수송온도 설정을 위한 수확 후 저온순화 실험을 실시한 결과, 만개 후 146일에 수확한 과실이 만개 후 153일에 수확한 과실에 비하여 25oC 유통 후 높은 경도를 유지하는 경향을 보였고 최종 수송 목표 온도인 5oC로 저하되는 속도가 느릴수록 과육장해의 발 생심도 및 에틸렌발생량이 높은 경향을 보였으므로 ‘창조’ 품종에 있어 동남아 지역 수출 시 생리장해 및 과실 품질 유지를 위해서는 수확시기를 만개 후 146일 이전 에 설정하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 판단되었다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 ‘창조’ 배의 목적별 수확시기 결정 및 과실의 선별 기술에 일조하고 수출 시장에서의 한국산 배의 신인도 확보에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

        Application Specific Messages(ASM)은 다수 선박들의 AIS사용으로 인한 통신 과부하 문제를 해결하기 위해 IMO, ITU, IALA와 같 은 국제기구들에 의해 해상에서의 적용이 결정되었다. ASM을 이용한 통신은 기상 정보, 사고보고 및 항해 경고를 포함하여 해양에서 많 은 양의 안전 관련 정보를 전송할 수 있다. 특히 ASM통신 시스템은 음성을 통한 선박 간, 선박과 육상 간(4S) VHF통신의 일부를 메시지 로 전달이 가능할 것으로 기대된다. 해상의 4S통신에서 중요도가 높은 문장을 표준통신메시지로 선정하여 ASM통신에 이용한다면, 정확 하고 신속한 메시지의 송수신이 가능할 것이다. 표준통신메시지의 결정은 사용자의 의견이 적극적으로 반영되어야 하며, 이를 위해 본 연 구에서는 57명의 항해사와 50명의 Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) 관제사를 대상으로 설문을 실시하였다. 설문의 결과를 분석하여 해상통신에 서 사용빈도가 높은 53개의 표준통신메시지를 제시하였다. 제시된 표준통신메시지는 해상에서 사용되는 주요 문장들에 대한 실제적인 정 보이며, ASM을 이용한 통신장비 및 인터페이스 개발을 위한 참고 자료로 이용될 수 있을 것이다.

        The life and astronomical activity of Lee Deok-Seong (李德星, 1720-1794) was studied using various historical sources, including the astronomical almanac, Seungjeongwon-Ilgi (Daily records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon dynasty), and the Gwansang-Gam’s logbooks during Joseon dynasty (A.D. 1392– 1910). We present the results of the study including the following main findings. First, from the investigation of Lee’s family tree, we find that a number of his relatives were also astronomers, notably Samryeok-Gwan (三曆官, the post of calendrical calculation). Second, we find that he took part in the compilation of an annual astronomical almanac over a period of at least 16 years. His major achievements in the astronomy of the Joseon dynasty were to establish a new method of calendar-making calculation and to bring astronomical materials to the Joseon court through a visit to China. The Joseon dynasty enforced the Shixianli (時憲曆, a Chinese calendar made by Adam Shall) in 1654 without fully understanding the calendar. So an astronomer and an envoy were dispatched to China in order to master the intricacies of the calendar and to learn as much of Western science as was available in that time and place. Lee Deok-Seong worked at the Gwansang-Gam (觀象監, Royal Astronomical Bureau) during the reigns of King Yeongjo (英祖) and Jeongjo (正祖). As best as we can ascertain in relation with the calculations in the Shixian calendar, Lee visited China four times. During his trips and interactions, he learned a new method for calendar-making calculations, and introduced many Western-Chinese astronomical books to Joseon academia. Lee greatly improved the accuracy of calendrical calculations, even while simplifying the calculation process. With these achievements, he finally was promoted to the title of Sungrok-Daebu (崇祿 大夫), the third highest grade of royal official. In conclusion, history demonstrates that Lee Deok-Seong was one of the most outstanding astronomers in the late-Joseon dynasty.

        The catch performance of the silver-white jig for automatic jigging machine, developed to improve the effectiveness of LED fishing lamp in catching squid, was compared to that of the conventional green jig. The vessels used in this investigation were Haesong-ho (A-vessel), a training vessel of Gangwon State University and Haengbok-ho (B-vessel), a commercial fishing boat. In the case of the A-vessel, five to eight automatic jigging machines were used in the fishing operation with a 31.3 kW LED fishing lamp in summer. As for the B-vessel, fourteen automatic jigging machines were used with a 43.2 kW LED fishing lamp in autumn and winter. The results showed that the catch performance of the silver-white jig was similar to that of the green jig in the case of the A-vessel (p>0.05). However, in the case of the B-vessel, the catch performance of the silver-white jig was superior to that of the green jig in both winter (p<0.05) and autumn (P<0.001). Based on the catch performance results regarding the B-vessel in autumn, it is expected that the annual income increase that can be earned by using the silver-white jig will be KRW 26,385,000.

        To improve the efficiency of hairtail trolling, it is important to gain an accurate understanding of the distribution of fish based on their diurnal vertical migration patterns. This study evaluated the vertical distribution of hairtails through catch efficiency tests using vertical longlines. Five replicate tests of the efficiency were carried out on the eastern coast of Jeju Island from August to September 2016, from 11:00 AM to 03:00 PM in the daytime and 11:00 PM to 03:00 AM in the nighttime. The fishing gear was composed of 20 hooks per line set, numbered in order from the first hook near the surface to the last hook on the seabed. The depth of the first hook was 18 m, and that of the last hook was 86 m. Pacific saury was used as the baits. In total, 10 sets of fishing gear were used per trip. After fishing, we counted the hairtails at each numbered hook, which were summed up both by number and in aggregate. A total of 232 hairtails were caught using 2,000 hooks: 193 individuals at daytime and 39 at nighttime. The hook rate was 11.5% : 9.6% at daytime; 2.0% at nighttime. For both daytime and nighttime catches, there were variations in the hook rates at each numbered hook. In the daytime, a maximum of 28.5% catches occurred at hook number 18, followed by 21.4% at number 20, and 10.7% at number 17, accounting for 60.6% of the daytime hook rates. In the nighttime, a maximum of 23.0% catches occurred at hook number 1, followed by 15.3% at hook number 4 and 9, accounting for 53.6% of the nighttime hook rate. Based on the above results, hairtails are usually distributed in deeper region in daytime, whereas they occur near the surface in nighttime. Therefore, it is necessary to position trolling lines according to diurnal vertical distribution layers of hairtails for fishing efficiency.
