This study was carried out to investigate insect community structure from different habitats in Baengnyeong island. We performed day and night collection at two different habitats (mountain, rural area) of Baengnyeong island from Mayto September in 2015. A total of 2,879 individuals of 404 species, 81 families belonging to 10 orders were collectedand identified. A dominant species was Idisia ornata Pascoe (Tenebrionidae) despite a very low percentage (6.04%) ofthe species among the catches. Results of independent t-test showed a significant high (p<0.001) of species richness onmountain. Also, seasonal results of ANOVA (Analysis of variance) were significantly influential with species abundanceand species richness. The result of NMDS analysis showed that the community structure of the insects from the mountainis different with rural area.

Pogonini Laporte, 1834 is one of the tribes in Trechinae Bonelli, 1810 (Coleoptera: Carabidae). This tribe is morphologically similar to Trechini, Benbidiini, Zolini and Patrobini of the subfamily. However, Pogonini can be distinguished from the other tribes by having a combination of the following characters: apical maxillary palpomere fusiform; umbilical series of setae on elytron more or less contiguous (though sparse in middle); each tarsomeres with a median sulcus on dorsal side. Pogonini includes about 85 species of 12 genera worldwide and is found in all zoogeographical regions of the world. Many species inhabit along the sea coasts or near salt lakes, and are recognized as halobiont. In Korea, Paik (1998) reported Pogonus (Pogonus) itoshimaensis Habu, 1954. However, he added only the species name in the checklist without description or illustration although few specimens were examined. After Paik’s study, any studies on taxonomic status and distribution of Korean Pogonini have not been carried out. The genus Pogonus Dejean is the largest group in Pogonini with two subgenera: P. (Pogonoidius Carret, 1903) and P. (Pogonus Dejean, 1821). These two subgenera share very similar external morphological characters; Pogonoidius has setae on anterior angles of pronotum and setae at 7th interval of elytra while Pogonus does not have them. In the present study, two species, Pogonus (Pogonus) japonicus Putzeys, 1875 and P. (Pogonoidius) punctulatus Dejean, 1828, are newly recognized from Korea. A key to the Korean Pogonini species, redescription, distribution, photos of diagnostic characters, and illustrations of male and female genitalia are provided.

A long term monitoring was carried out to compare altitudinal effects on insect community structures on high mountains and evaluate responses the monitoring and changed of insect communities induced by the climate change. These mountains were choose for Mt. Jeombong for northern part, Mt. Ilwol for middle and Mt. Beakun for southern. Each mountain was divided into three altitudinal gradients. They were collected three times a season from spring to autumn, using pitfall traps for ground beetles and UV light trap for moths. The present study presents preliminary results of analysis for the first year monitoring. In total 41beetle species and 326 moths were collected from the monitoring sites in 2012. abundance of ground beetles and moths were the highest in Mt. Baekun followed by Mt. Ilwol and lowest in Mt. Jeombong. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results showed statistically significant differences among sampling area, species evenness and Shannon’s diversity index with altitude in species abundance as a response variable. Also we found statistically significant differences to three species of ground beetle and six species of moths with altitude. Although we expected a distinct cluster with the difference of altitude at each study site. one of ordination analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS), showed distinct clusters with the ground beetles assemblage at some altitude and moths assemblage at sampling date.

whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) have a wide host range including cucumber, tomato, and pepper, resulting in loss of crop yield. In this study, we tested larvicidal efficacy of several on-the-market environment–friendly agricultural materials (EFAM) to select the effective products after the target pests were stabilized in indoor rearing condition. The developmental periods of two whiteflies are as follows: in the case of T. vaporariorum, egg duration is 9.6 days, and nymph is 18.9 days, and in the case of B.tabaci, egg durationis 7.4 days, and nymph is 15.2 days under 25℃ with relative humidity (RH) of 60±5% and a photoperiod of 16L : 8D. The total period of T. vaporariorum as 5 days longer than B. tabaci. Among 22 EFAMs six products showed more than 60% of insecticide efficacy for against T. vaporariorum BTVB, BTVD, BTVG, BTVL, BTVM, and BTVS. On the other hand, seven EFAM products including showed over 60% of insecticide efficacy against B. tabaci BTVD, BTVG, BTVK, BTVL, BTVM, BTVN, and BTVU. In the case of Spodptera litura previously, xxEFAMs were tesed against 2nd instar S.litura, and EFAMs were found to have more than 90% efficacy. Test of these six EFAMs against entire larval stages were performed in this study. Although some of these products showed still more than 90% of insecticidal efficacy against up to 3rd instar larvae, the efficacy of these EFAMs sharply decreased as ages increase, result is less than 60% of efficacy of the products at most. This result indicates the difficulty to control S. litura with the on-the-market EFAMs alone under economic injury level. Collectively, it is required to find more EFAMs and find alternative method to control those insect pests tested in this study.

Optimum concentrations of anesthetic clove oil and anesthetic lidocaine-HCl were determined for a species of adult marine medaka, Oryzias dancena, over a range of salinity conditions, and investigated in a transport simulation experiment by analyzing various water and physiological parameters. Research indicated that the higher the concentration of anesthetic at each salinity, the shorter the anesthesia time at each salinity. At each concentration, fish were anesthetized slower at water salinities over 10 ppt (P<0.05). Anesthesia time at 10 ppt was faster than any other salinity. In 10 ppt salinity, the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and respiratory frequencies of the clove-oil-administered groups decreased until 48 hours (P<0.05), whereas the NH4 + and CO2 concentrations increased until 48 hours (P<0.05). In same period, the DO, NH4 +, and CO2 concentrations and respiratory frequencies all decreased as the clove oil concentration increased (P<0.05). The trends in the DO, NH4 +, and CO2 concentrations and respiratory frequencies in the lidocaine-HCl-administered groups were similar to those in the clove-oil-administered groups. In conclusion, clove oil and lidocaine-HCl are effective anesthetics, improving the transportation of the marine medaka. The results from this study will contribute to safe laboratory handling of the marine medaka, which are commonly required by many research studies and experiments.

The marine medaka, Oryzias dancena is a suitable sample as a laboratory animal because it has a small size and clearly distinguishes between female and male. Data on the growth and maturity of the diploid and triploid sea cucurbit species suitable for laboratory animals are very useful for studying other species. Triploidy was induced in the marine medaka by cold shock treatment (0°C) of fertilized eggs for 45 min, applied two minutes after fertilization. The diploid and triploid male fish were larger than their female counterparts (P<0.05), and the concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4) were higher in the induced triploids over 1 year (P<0.05). In both the diploid and tri-ploid groups the concentrations of TSH and T4 were higher in the male fish than in the females (P<0.05), while the testo-sterone and estradiol-17ß concentrations in the induced triploids were lower than in the diploids (P<0.05). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the triploid fish was lower than that for the diploids, and the GSI for females in each ploidy group were higher than that for the males. For both groups the GSI was highest at 4 months of age, and decreased thereafter to 12 months. Analysis of the gonads of one-year-old triploid fish suggested that the induction of triploidy probably causes sterility in this species; this effect was more apparent in females than in males.
