Herein, the existing structural design criteria for highway bridge columns with hollow bars were analyzed. Expanding upon previous research focused on the performance analysis of the columns under compressive loads, load– displacement curves were evaluated and crack analysis was performed under cyclic transverse loads. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element structural analysis compared the structural performance of existing steel bars, same-reinforced hollow bars, and reduced hollow bars in detail. Results indicated that with regard to elastic or initial crack behavior, the existing steel bars can be replaced by the other bars. Future research should delve into inelastic behavior and strategies to ensure seismic performance.

This study performs finite Element stress analysis of flange connections at noise barriers with circular steel tubes, which have a light weight. Subsequent numerical simulation results for three types of models (standard, double, and standard models strengthen by ribs) present that the applied connections for target noise barriers constructed show suitable structural performance. In this paper, the existing finite element stress analysis using the ABAQUS program is further extended to study the local stress distribution of the noise barriers with new type circular steel tubes. The numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing different types with stresses occurred in the noise barrier from the numerical simulation.

This study carried out fiber damage detections of laminated GFRP plate structures using a modified bi-variate Gamma function. The effects of different layup sequences of composites on the fiber damage detection are studied using the finite element commercial package and genetic algorithm. Four unknown parameters are considered to determine the shape of the damage distribution, which is a modified form of the bivariate Gamma density distribution function. The sample studies show the excellence of the proposed method from the standpoints of its computation efficiency as well as its ability to determine the complex shape of an arbitrary stiffness degradation distribution.

The finite element analysis of large sized rectangular water tank structures made of stainless steel materials is carried out for various combined load cases. The combined load cases for a large size of 5,000ton are further determined using the specification(KS B 6283) established from the Korean Standards Association. For the better numerical efficiency, the rectangular panels are modelled using the ANSYS program. The numerical results obtained for different load cases show as follows. In order to resist the snow load, it takes the influence of the gap than the size of the column. Also, in order to resist the water pressure, it shall increase the thickness of the wall. But, increasing the thickness of the wall is considerably less economical. Therefore, the angle with big thickness should be placed right next to the wall.

In this study we developed an integrated precast concrete decks for a rapid construction. The structural performance in the integrated precast bridge decks is evaluated by real-scale test bed and detailed finite element analyses. The numerical analysis results were compared with the experimental data from a real-scaled single-span precast/prestressed concrete bridge decks under truck loading. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of external loads on the structural behavior for different locations and measuring points on the precast bridge decks. The assessment in this study indicates that the integrated precast bridge decks show an excellent structural performance as expected.

The combined load cases for a large size of 5,000ton are further determined using the specification(KS B 6283) established from the Korean Standards Association. The changed water capacity due to the size of reservoirs could be heavily dependent for evaluating seismic effects, especially for large reservoirs. For the better numerical efficiency, the rectangular panels are modelled using the ANSYS ADPL module. The numerical results obtained for different load cases mainly show the effect of the interactions between the different load combination and other various parameters, for example, the water capacity, and different stainless steel materials. The structural performance for various load combinations is also evaluated.

This study analyzes performance-cost ratio of composite(GFRP) wind-towers by fiber reinforcement angle and determines their optimal fiber angle. The finite element models for composite structures using the ANSYS program described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the effect of the geometrical combination. New results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the cost for various parameters, such as thicknesses of outer shells and stiffeners. From the numerical examples, optimal fiber angles were determined as 80°∼90°.

This study carried out finite element deflection analysis of cylindrical shell structures made of composite materials, which is based on the micro-mechanical approach for different fiber-volume fractions. The finite element (FE) models for composite structures using multi-scale approaches described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the effect of the material combination. New results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the fiber-volume fraction for various parameters, such as fiber angles, layup sequences, and length-thickness ratios. It may be concluded from this study that the combination effect of fiber and matrix, largely governing the dynamic characteristics of composite shell structures, should not be neglected and thus the optimal combination could be used to design such civil structures for better dynamic performance.

The method based on various mathematical characteristic equations for identifying tensile forces in the cable structure system are used as response data to reflect the properties of the dynamic sensitivity. The vibration tests have been conducted with respect to levels of applied weight for the sagged cable. In this study, a set of natural frequencies are extracted from the measured dynamic data. Next, existing characteristic equation methods based these extracted natural frequencies are applied to identify tensil forces of the sagged cable system. Through several verification procedures, the proposed methods could be applied to a sagged cable system when the initial material data are insufficiency.

This study deals with an enhanced assumed strain (EAS) three-dimensional element for free vibration analysis of laminated composite and sandwich structures. The three-dimensional finite element (FE) formulation based on the EAS method for composite structures shows excellence from the standpoints of computational efficiency, especially for distorted element shapes. Using the EAS FE formulation developed for this study, the effects of side-to-thickness ratios, aspect ratios and ply orientations on the natural frequency are studied and compared with the available elasticity solutions and other plate theories. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. The new approach works well for the numerical experiments tested, especially for complex structures such as sandwich plates with laminated composite faces.

In this paper, the analysis of impact damage behavior of a reinforced concrete structure that undergoes both a shock impulsive loading and an impact loading due to the air blast induced from an explosion is performed. Firstly, a pair of multiple loadings are selected from the scenario that an imaginary explosion accident is assumed. The RC structures strengthened with advanced composite materials (ACM) are considered as a scheme for retrofitting RC wall structures subjected to multiple explosive loadings and then the evaluation of the resistant performance against them is presented in comparison with the result of the evaluation of a RC structure without a retrofit. Also, in order to derive the result of the analysis similar to that of real explosion experiments, which require the vast investment and expense for facilities, the constitutive equation and the equation of state (EOS) which can describe the real impact and shock phenomena accurately are included with them. In addition, the numerical simulations of two concrete structures are achieved using AUTODYN-3D, an explicit analysis program, in order to prove the retrofit performance of a ACM-strengthened RC wall structure.
