The unexpected introductions of exotic organisms between different countries are being accelerated by the global climate change and increasing international trade. Especially, many exotic insects cause serious economic losses and ecological disturbance in invaded areas. Since the uncertainty of potential impact, a priori conception has to be established for better emergency response. The risk assessment of national and foreign examples will be presented together with an evaluation of the current status.

Invasive exotic insects are rapidly increasing and spreading in a short period of time, threatening the ecosystem. Now, we need technology to monitor the dispersal of exotic insects and to strengthen the ecosystem risk assessment. The United States, Europe, and other countries are fully equipped with a biological control system for threats to biodiversity through systematic investigation and database construction, but Korea is not. Risk assessment and development of a dispersal/change prediction model are essential to maintain a safe ecosystem from invasive exotic species. This research group is carrying out a study to minimize the ecological damage by developing a prediction model of dispersal/change for invading alien insect species, a risk assessment technology and a response manual for management. I would like to look into the current state of exotic insect invasion through this small group meeting, and look for directions to study in the future.

Cinara (Cinara) cedri cedri Mimeur, 1936 is extensively distributed in Europe (France, Italy, Spain, and UK), North Africa (Morocco and Algeria), North America (California and New York), South America (Argentina), Middle East (Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey), and Asia (China). Recently, this species was also invaded into China. In 2018, C. (Cinara) cedri cedri was firstly discovered on one plant, Cedrus deodara, in Korea. In this study, we provide full redescription in detail.

The Nitidulidae includes 10 subfamilies and over 350 genera and 4500 species and is the largest family in Cucujoidea. We place the enigmatic subfamily Calonecrinae into the internal relationship of Nitidulidae, a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analysis was performed using five gene regions (COI, 28s, CAD, H3, Wingless) for 80 taxa. We included 73 ingroup taxa representing nine of the ten currently recognized subfamilies of Nitidulidae and 7 outgroups. The phylogenetic results are consistent with prior molecular studies, that include a polyphyletic Nitidulinae with the inclusion of Meligethinae and Cillaeinae and that the Calonecrinae is sister taxon to Epuraeinae. Ancestral state reconstruction of feeding behavior indicates that stem group nitiduilds were most probably sap-feeding with transitions to other feeding types independently derived multiple times.

A new species of Discochiton Hodgson & Williams, 2018 collected on culms of Bambusa sp. (Poaceae) in Myanmar is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to D. expansum (Green, 1896), but distinct from it in having the legs four or five segmented, the preopercular pores associated with all four clear areas, and the 10–16 stigmatic spines on each cleft; in D. expansum, it has the legs reduced to single-segmented leg stub, the preopercular pores associated with two or three clear areas, and the 3–7 stigmatic spines.

The aphid genus Stomaphis Walker, 1870 (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Lachninae) is Palaearctic origin group with 30 valid species. It is associated with variable woody host plants, having very long rostrum, which enables them to feed crevices in thick bark of trees. In this study, Stomaphis (stomaphis) pini pini is newly recorded in the Korean Peninsula on Pinus densiflora (Pinaceae). We described morphological features of alate viviparous females, apterous males and oviparous females, respectively. Furthermore, little known forms, sexual morphs of giant oviparous females and dwarfish apterous males are observed.

The morphological identification of alate aphids needs reliable and appropriate methods such as morphometrics. In previous studies, the seven species which aphids have been known as migrating to potato had been separated into genus levels using specific points of forewing vein (Landmarks). Adding the number of secondary sensillum of antennae, setae of abdomen, etc., we experimented to separate four species of genus Aphis (Aphis craccivora, Aphis fabae, Aphis gossypii, Aphis spiraecola). After taking each of 25X twenty photographies of four species, we calculated and measured coordinates of landmarks, the number of secondary sensillum of antennae, dorsal setae of 8th abdominal segment, anterior/posterior genital plate setae and cauda, and then performed the principal component analysis using PAST3 and the canonical variate analysis using MORPHO J, only with a landmarks. As results, in PCA, Aphis gossypii has been separated, but the others are overlapping. In CVA, all species of aphis has been separated.

A ricanid planthopper, sometimes so called Ricania shantungensis, has been regarded as a serious invasive pest in Korean peninsula. It belongs to family Ricaniidae comprised of 40 genus and more than 400 species worldwide, and only 6 species recognized in Korea. The invasive planthopper has a wide host range including economic agricultural crops such as apple, peach and pear. In the meantime to investigate natural enemies for biological control, we have found an egg parasitoid. In this study, we report a new species of genus Phanuromyia, an egg parasitoid of the ricanid planthopper. Morphological characteristics of male and female are described in detail with high resolution images.

Coccidae is one of the major families of scale insects, with many species considered to be serious agricultural or horticultural pests. However, the phylogenetic relationships among coccid subfamilies, tribes and genera are poorly understood because the previous hypotheses are based only on morphological characters and cladistic analysis. Here, we present the first molecular phylogeny of the family based on DNA fragments of a mitochondrial gene (COI), nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (18S and 28S), and elongation factor-1α (EF-1α). We recover a monophyletic family Coccidae with strong support. However, some genera (Coccus and Pulvinaria), tribes (Coccini, Paralecaniini, Pulvinariini and Saissetiini) and subfamilies (Coccinae and Filippiinae) within the family found to be paraphyletic- or polyphyletic. Moreover, particular types of wax formation, which have been used as important taxonomic characters in Coccidae, were found in several unrelated taxa.

The genus Rosalia contains three subgenera of which distinctly divided by different body colors and distributional patterns. Eurybatodes is a monotypic subgenus with yellow tegument only found in Yunnan, China. Eurybatus is the most specious subgenus contains 21 species with reddish body color, widely distributed in Oriental region including Taiwan and Ryukyu islands. The blue subgenus Rosalia contains 5 species that distributes West Palaearctic, East Palaeartic, Japan, Oriental and West Nearctic, respectively. Here we present the ongoing research on multi-gene phylogeny and evolutionary studies of the genus Rosalia. This study provides new insight into the internal relationships and the evolutionary history of various traits (e.g. biogeography, colors, elytral patterns) of the genus Rosalia.

The subfamily Lachninae Herrich-Schaeffer, 1854 consist of about 400 species belonging to 19 genera world-wide. Lachninae are distributed mostly in the Nearctic, Oriental and Palaearctic Regions. Their host plants are known as grasses, deciduous tree and conifers. Taxonomic study of Lachninae has been dealt with some authors in several countries, whereas it has rarely performed in the Korean Peninsula after Lee et al. (1994). Here, we review the subfamily Lachninae from the Korean Peninsula, focusing on its taxonomic history and diversity.
