Edible biopolymer films were developed from the exopolysaccharides (EPS) extracted from Weissella confusa 113-2. The optimum composition for film formation was determined using the response surface analysis with the explanatory variables of the EPS (0.5-5.5%) and glycerol (0.5-5.5%) concentrations and the response variable of film elastic modulus (EM). The mass ratio of distilled water to solids was set constant (14:1). Tensile strength (TS), percentage elongation at break (%E), EM, water vapor permeability (WVP) of EPS films were evaluated. The glass transition temperatures of the films were also determined by a dynamic mechanical analysis. The optimum mass ratio of EPS to glycerol was 0.754:0.375. The WVP, TS, %E, and EM of the film under the optimal composition were 3.53±0.21 g·mm/kPa·h·m2, 7.03±0.49 MPa, 84.82±12.31%, and 62.03±6.93 MPa, respectively. The glass transition temperature varied from 54 to 83 °C. The EPS film has the potential to be applied to food products as an edible film with physical and barrier properties comparable to other biopolymer edible films.

Background : This research was conducted to investigate the effect of organic compost treatment on growth and yield of organically grown ginseng seedlings(Panax ginseng C.A. Mayer) in growing medium. Methods and Results : The test cultivars was used a native species of Panax ginseng C.A. Mayer that most commonly cultivated in Korea. By seeding interval(3×3cm), seeds of Panax ginseng C.A. Mayer were sowed on March 29, 2016 . Bed size was 85 (W) × 1800 (L) × 30 (H) cm and shading material of plastic house was used blue-white vinyl. Growing medium composition(V/V) were mixed in a ratio of peat moss 60%, perlite 30%, vermiculite 10%. The mixing ratio of Organic compost was livestock manure compost (2%, V/V), mixed oil cake(2%, V/V), poultry manure compost (2%, V/V) and was applied to growing medium basal application. The emergence rate of ginseng seedling was contorl 95.7%, livestock manure compost 97.0%, press cake 92.3%, poultry manure compost 94.2%. Shoot growth characteristics of ginseng seedlings did not show a significant difference in plant height, stem length, stem diameter but shoot fresh weight was higher tendency in livestock manure compost(0.34 g/plant) in comparison to control(0.26 g/plant), mixed oil cake(0.29 g/plant), poultry manure compost(0.27 g/plant). Similarly, root fresh weight was higher tendency in livestock manure compost(0.52 g/plant) in comparison to control(0.33 g/plant), mixed oil cake(0.47 g/plant), poultry manure compost(0.43 g/plant). Root length was in control 10.2cm, livestock manure compost 11.8cm, mixed oil cake 8.9cm, poultry manure compost 8.6cm. As mentioned above, the reason that root length is shorter in mixed oil cake, poultry manure compost is thought to be due to the influence of gas injury. Conclusion : Growth characteristics of ginseng seedling showed a good growth trend in the organic compost treatment groups , especially livestock manure treatment root fresh weight increased 57% compared to control group. However, early defoliation phenomenon occured at mixed oil cake, poultry manure compost in late June. This is thought to have occurred by the disturbance of gas such as ammonia gas, nitrous acid gas. Therefore, if you use mixed oil cake, poultry manure compost to cultivate ginseng seedling, it is expected to pay attention to the damage caused by the gas disturbance.

Background : Amaranthus is a cosmopolitan genus of annual or short-lived perennial plants. Some amaranth species are cultivated as leaf vegetables, pseudocereals, and ornamental plants. Most of the species from Amaranthus are summer annual weeds and are commonly referred to as pigweed. Approximately 60 species are recognized, with inflorescences and foliage ranging from purple and red to green or gold. Members of this genus share many characteristics and uses with members of the closely related genus Celosia. Amaranthus shows a wide variety of morphological diversity among and even within certain species. This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characteristics and grain yield of Amaranthus under subalpine area(altitude 510m) Methods and Results : Six resources(GR-1∼6) were tested in this experiment. Its seedlings were sown at 21. March. and raised for 27 days in nursery bed. The days after sowing for emerging 80% seedlings was 14∼18 days and No. of leaves was 4.5∼5.2 ea./plant. Plant height of GR-4 was highest at 15.2㎝ in nursery period. These seedlings transplanted at 19. April in the planting density of 80×30㎝. The range of heading date was 25. May∼7. June. GR-1, 2 showed more early heading at 25. May but heading date of GR-6 was 7. June. The Flowering date of Amaranthus cultivated in subalpine area was 20∼28. June. Plant height at flowering time of GR-4 was significantly high at 152.7㎝ comparison with 95.2㎝ of GR-1 but No. of branches in GR-4 was lowest at 7.5 ea/plant. The length of ears was shortest 28.8 ㎝ in GR-5 compared 41.0㎝ of GR-4. Grain yield of Amaranthus harvested at 8. July showed significantly difference according to gene resources and the highest yield of grain was 556.8㎏ in GR-1 Conclusion : The growth and ripening characteristics of Amaranthus tricolor showed many difference under subalpine cultivation according to gene resources. The predictable grain yield of Amaranthus under subalpine cultivation was 240.0∼556.8㎏/10a according to gene resources and their cultivation period demanded 80 days.
