        This study investigated the effect of dietary lysine and gamma-linolenic acid(GLA) levels on growth performance, carcass traits, and meat quality in finishing pigs. Pigs were provided with feed containing two different levels of lysine(0.45% and 0.75%) with three different levels of gamma-linolenic acid(0.0, 0.3, and 0.6%). Average daily gain(ADG) was significantly lower (p<0.01) in pigs provided with the lower level of lysine. In contrast, feed/gain(p<0.01), diet cost/gain(p<0.05), and intramuscular fat(p<0.01) were all significantly higher in pigs fed the lower level of lysine. Similarly, meat color scores(CIE L*, a*, and b*) and cooking loss were significantly higher(p<0.01) in pigs fed the lower level of lysine, whereas shear force(kg/2.5 inch2)was not affected by dietary lysine. The addition of GLA had no significant effect on any of the parameters measured. The results indicate that providing pigs with 0.45% lysine in their diet may help to increase intramuscular fat content, allowing the industry to produce pork products that meet consumer needs in Korea.

        The aim of this study was to investigate growth performance of growing-finishing pigs in response to high planes of nutrition. Seventy-two Yorkshire barrows weighing approximately 26 kg were randomly allotted to one of three planes of nutrition: ‘BASAL,’ ‘high’ (HI), and ‘extra-high’ (X-HI). BASAL, HI, and X-HI grower diets contained 1.15%, 1.25%, and 1.35% lysine and 3.48, 3.54, and 3.60 Mcal DE/kg, respectively; finisher diets had 1.10%, 1.10%, and 1.20% lysine and 3.43, 3.50, and 3.57 Mcal DE/kg, respectively. The animals were placed on the grower and finisher diets for 40 and 63 days, respectively, and slaughtered. Average daily gain, which did not differ among the three dietary groups during the grower phase, was greater (p<0.05) in the X-HI group than in the other two groups during the finisher phase (811, 862, and 842 g during the grower phase and 855, 884, and 953 g during the finisher phase for the BASAL, HI, and X-HI groups, respectively). Dressing percentage of the carcass was greater in the X-HI than in the other two groups, backfat thickness tending to be less in the X-HI group vs. BASAL (p=0.09). Results suggest that the growth rate of growing-finishing barrows could be increased by placing them on a high plane of nutrition.

        본 연구는 비육돈에 청보리 사일리지 첨가가 돈육의 물리-화학적 특성, 육색, 지방산 조성 및 구성 아미노산 조성에 미치는 영향을 알아내고자 실시하였다. 평균 체중이 77.71±1.92 kg인 3원교잡종 ((Landrance×Yorkshire)×Duroc) 비육돈 72두를 공시하여 돈방 당 6두씩, 시험구당 3반복으로 실시하였고, 시험사료는 일반 배합사료(대조구, C)에 청보리 사일리지를 1%(T1), 2%(T2) 및 3%(T3) 첨가하여 46일간 급여하였다. 청보리 사일리지가 돈육의 특성에 미치는 결과, 등심의 조단백질 함량은 T2구가 대조구에 비해 유의적으로(p<0.05) 낮았고, 등심의 육색 중 적색도는 T3구가 대조구에 비해 유의적으로(p<0.05) 낮았다. 등심의 불포화 지방산 및 다가불포화 지방산의 함량은 T2구가 대조구에 비해 유의적으로(p<0.05) 높은 반면, 포화 지방산의 함량은 대조구에 비해 유의적으로(p<0.05) 낮았다. 등심의 leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, alanine 및 tyrosine 함량은 T2구 및 T3구가 대조구에 비해 유의적으로(p<0.05) 낮았다. 따라서 비육돈 사료에 청보리 사일리지 2%이상 급여는 등심육의 조단백질 함량과 지방산 조성 및 구성 아미노산 조성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 특히 청보리 사일리지 2% 급여구는 등심 중에 불포화 지방산의 조성을 높이면서 포화지방산의 조성을 낮추어 주는 것으로 나타났다.

        SERPINB3 (also known Squamous cell carcinoma antigen 1, SCCA1) is involved in apoptosis, immune response, cell migration and invasiveness of cells. It has been investigated in various types of squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore we investigated the functional role of SERPINB3 gene in human epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) using laying hens, the most relevant animal model. In 136 laying hens, EOC was found in 10 (7.4%). We compared the expression and localization of SERPINB3 using RT-PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, and SERPINB3 activation was detected in chicken and human ovarian cancer cell lines using immunofluorescence microscopy. Thereafter, we examined the prognostic value of SERPINB3 expression in patients with EOC by multivariate linear logistic regression and Cox’ proportional hazard analyses. In present study, SERPINB3 mRNA was induced in cancerous ovaries (p< 0.01), and it was only expressed in the glandular epithelium(GE) of cancerous ovaries of laying hens. SERPINB3 protein was localized predominantly to the nucleus of glandular epithelium in cancerous ovaries of laying hens, and it was abundant in the nucleus of both chicken and human ovarian cancer cell lines. In 109 human patients with EOC, 15 (13.8%), 66 (60.6%) and 28 (25.7%) of those patients showed weak, moderate and strong expression of SERPINB3 protein, respectively. Strong expression of SERPINB3 protein was a prognostic factor for platinum resistance (adjusted OR, 5.94; 95% Confidence Limits, 1.21-29.15). Therefore SERPINB3 may play an important role in ovarian carcinogenesis and be a novel biomarker for predicting platinum resistance and a poor prognosis for survival in patients with EOC.
