        For obtaining estimates of a total magnetic flux, we propose to use measurements of ∂I/∂⋋. obtained by a modulation method which is formally identical to Stokes V-parameter measurements. In this case the polarization is not analyzed. It is advisable to use in measurements two parts of the spectral line wing.

        To use as a guideline for the development of a music aptitude test for 4-6th grade elementary school students in Korea, we evaluated the test items of music aptitude tests widely used in USA, in particular, the Intermediate Measures of Music Audiation (IMMA) and the Musical Aptitude Profile (MAP). IMMA was administered to 570 4th grade students and MAP to 1335 5-6th grade students in Seoul and Taegu, Korea. The reliability of IMMA was .85 for the 4th grade. The reliability of MAP was .82 for the 5th grade and .89 for the 6th grade. The mean of item difficulties of IMMA was .83 and that of MAP was .72. More than 75% of IMMA test items have discriminations below .2, and more than 43% of MAP test items have discriminations below .2. These results are significantly different from those of American students. The evaluations of test items of IMMA and MAP that are of particular interest are as follows. Test items with ascending melodies are more difficult than those with descending melodies. Test items with tied notes, rests, dotted notes, and tripples are more difficult. When two adjacent test items use the same melodies as in MAP, they influence each other. In summary, the reliabilities of both tests are high, but they are too easy for the Korean students and too many items have low discriminations. So it is not appropriate to use both tests for Korean students. More difficult test items such as those discovered in this study should be used for Korean students. The different results between Korean and American students indicate that music aptitude is sensitive to cultural difference, for example, Korean students' exposure to Korean traditional music. Therefore cultural difference should be seriously considered in designing a music aptitude test for Korean students.

        We have solved the radiative transfer problem using a Sobolev approximation with an escape probability method in case of the supersonic expansion of a stellar envelope to an ambient medium. The radiation from the expanding envelope turns out to produce a P-Cygni type profile. In order to investigate the morphology of the theoretical P-Cygni type profile, we have treated V∞, Vsto, β(parameters for the velocity field), it and E(parameter for collisional effect) as model parameters. We have investigated that the velocity field and the mass loss rate affect the shapes of the P-Cygni type profiles most effectively. The secondarily important factors are V∞, Vsto. The collisional effect tends to make the total flux increased but not so much in magnitude. We have infered some physical parameters of 68 Cyg, HD24912, and ℇ persei such as V∞, M from the model calculation, which shows a good agreenment with the observational results.

        The present study evaluated the blood profile and meat color of ducks with Houttuynia cordata (H. cordata) pellets in their diets. In total, 120 pekin ducks (1-d-old) were used in a 42 d growth trial. Ducks were randomly allocated to six pens and exposed to three replicates of two treatments: (1) controls as basal diet and (2) basal diet + 2% H. cordata pellets (T1). Total-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride contents or L* and b* vaules revealed significant difference (p>0.05) in compared with those in the controls; however, dietary supplementation of H. cordata pellets did not affect (p>0.05) LDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol and a* values. In conclusion, the inclusion of 2% H. cordata pellets improved HDL-cholesterol and meat color in duck breast and thigh meats, which further reduced other cholesterol values.

        하천수사용 관리를 적정하게 관리하기 위해서는 객관적인 하천수사용량 자료가 수집되어야 한다. 그러나, 하천수 사용자의 취수여건을 고려하여 유량계 외에 수문조작 등의 간접적인 계측방법을 인정하고 있고, 사용자의 자발적인 보고에 의존함에 따라 자료의 객관화가 어려운 실정이다. 이에 한강홍수통제소에서는 농업용수 사용 비중이 커 하천유량 파악이 어려운 만경강의 고산~봉동 수위관측소 구간에 위치한 어우보 취수로에 V-ADCP를 이용한 계측시설을 설치 및 운영하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 V-ADCP로 측정된 유속을 이용하여 실시간 하천수사용량 산정을 위한 유속분포법의 적 용성을 평가하였다. 이를 위해 Chiu의 2차원 유속분포식의 매개변수 민감도를 분석하고, 실측유량 자료에 기초한 최적 매개변수를 산정하였다. 또한 수위-유량관계법, 지표유속법과 비교 평가하여 유속분포법의 특성을 분석하였다.

        Background : Narcissus tazetta (N. tazetta), belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, is a bulbous plant distributed in Korea, China, and Japan. Amaryllidaceae family plants contained galantamine exhibiting dominant and selective acetylcholinesterase inhibition. In this study, transcriptome analysis of N. tazetta was carried out. Methods and Results : The results of studies conducted in duplicate revealed the presence of a total of 305,228 and 370,567 unigenes, acquired from 69,605,788 and 59,770,506 raw reads, respectively, after trimming the raw reads using CutAdapt, assembly using Trinity package, and clustering using CD-Hit-EST. The resulting unigenes were annotated based on the NCBI Non-redundant protein database, as N. tazetta is genetically closer to Phoenix dactylifera and Elaeis guineensis. The unigenes of N. tazetta were clustered into three major categories: biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions, with 51 functional sections. A large number of unigenes (11,371 and 15,535 from replicates 1 and 2, respectively) were categorized in the biological process cluster, followed by the cellular component cluster, and the molecular function cluster. With respect to the biological process category, the unigenes were assigned to 23 functional sections. The majority of unigenes were involved in cellular processes. Among the unigenes clustered as the cellular component with 14 sections, most genes were associated with the cell and cell parts. Furthermore, 156,584 and 201,353 unigenes, respectively, matched the molecular function cluster with 14 sections, of which most unigenes were related to metabolic process and cellular process. Conclusion : This study provides functional information of N. tazetta and highlights the use of the Illumina platform for transcriptome research.

        Background : Lycoris radiata (L. radiata), which belongs to Amaryllidaceae family, is native to Northeast Asia including Korea, Japan, and China. It is known for its high ornamental and medicinal values. Extensive research has been conducted in a several fields, including molecular biology, morphology, pharmacology, physiology, palynology, and chromosomal biology. The plant is notable for its various biological activities, including anti-cancer, anti-malarial, anti-microbial, reduction in blood pressure, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxicity, and neuroprotective effects. Methods and Results : The results of studies conducted in duplicate revealed the presence of a total of 325,609 and 404,019 unigenes, acquired from 9,913,869,968 and 10,162,653,038 raw reads, respectively, after trimming the raw reads using CutAdapt, assembly using Trinity package, and clustering using CD-Hit-EST. The resulting unigenes were annotated based on the NCBI Non-redundant protein database, as L. radiata is genetically closer to Elaeis guineensis and Phoenix dactylifera. The unigenes of L. radiata were clustered into three major categories: biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions, with 51 functional sections. A large number of unigenes (203,157 and 224,813 from replicates 1 and 2, respectively) were categorized in the biological process cluster, followed by the cellular component cluster, and the molecular function cluster. With respect to the biological process category, the unigenes were assigned to 23 functional sections. The majority of unigenes were involved in cellular processes. Among the unigenes clustered as the cellular component with 14 sections, most genes were associated with the cell and cell parts. Furthermore, 78,017 and 88,817 unigenes, respectively, matched the molecular function cluster with 14 sections, of which most unigenes were related to binding and catalytic activity. Conclusion : This study provides functional information of L. radiata and highlights the use of the Illumina platform for transcriptome research.

        The changes in extreme daily rainfall totals in Punjab Province, Pakistan, during the period (1981- 2014) are examined in this study. The analysis was focused on the extreme annual and monthly rainfall events, by processing the exceeding of the daily rainfall over various thresholds, which are indicators for the incidence of extreme rainfall events. To analyze the changes in extreme rainfall events and trends of the time series of the annual number of extreme rainfall days (%) the thresholds of 30mm and 50mm has been estimated. Evidence from the twelve stations considered shows that there is an increase in annual number of extreme rainfall days (%) in dataset. These changes of heavy and extreme rainfall events pronounce significant environmental consequences which cause considerable impact on society.

        Background : To evaluate the quality of Glycyrrhizae radix (licorice), a popular herbal medicine in Korea, it is necessary to investigate the component profiles of the Glycyrrhiza species distributed in Korean market. Specifically, to control the quality of Korean Glycyrrhizae radix preparations including raw materials, glycyrrhizin (> 2.5%) and liquiritigenin (> 0.7%) has been used as a standard marker compound in Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). To the best of our knowledge, there have been only a few studies regarding the fingerprinting techniques and metabolomics approach of the phytochemicals in Glycyrrhizae radix in Korean market. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a validated method for botanical raw material (BRM) standardization. Methods and Results : Twenty-one Glycyrrhizae radix (G. glabra, G. uralensis, and G. glabra × G. uralensis) were analyzed by UPLC-QTOF-MS and were estimated to statistical and multivariate analysis. Large scale multi-targeted metabolic profiling and fingerprinting techniques were utilized to access a broader insight into the chemical composition of Glycyrrhiza species. The UV/VIS spectra, and MS data (accurate mass and fragmentation pattern in negative mode) of the components in the BRM of G. glabra, G. uralensis, and G. glabra × G. uralensis (incorporation and hybridization) were analyzed with multivariate analyses. Interestingly, UPLC-QTof-MS derived PCA analysis and fingerprinting techniques was found to be effective techniques in the classification of species based on genetic and/or geographical origins. In addition, the revealed metabolite markers could be utilized as a guidance for the BRM standardization as well as a database for quality control of commercial products containing Glycyrrhizae radix. Conclusion : From the above results, the revealed metabolite markers could be utilized as a guidance for the BRM standardization as well as a database for quality control of commercial products containing Glycyrrhizae radix.

        To characterize the female or male transcriptome of the Pacific abalone and further increase genomic resources, we sequenced the mRNA of full-length complementary DNA (cDNA) libraries derived from pooled tissues of female and male Haliotis discus hannai by employing the Iso-Seq protocol of the PacBio RSII platform. We successfully assembled whole full-length cDNA sequences and constructed a transcriptome database that included isoform information. After clustering, a total of 15,110 and 12,145 genes that coded for proteins were identified in female and male abalones, respectively. A total of 13,057 putative orthologs were retained from each transcriptome in abalones. Overall Gene Ontology terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways analyzed in each database showed a similar composition between sexes. In addition, a total of 519 and 391 isoforms were genome-widely identified with at least two isoforms from female and male transcriptome databases. We found that the number of isoforms and their alternatively spliced patterns are variable and sex-dependent. This information represents the first significant contribution to sex-preferential genomic resources of the Pacific abalone. The availability of whole female and male transcriptome database and their isoform information will be useful to improve our understanding of molecular responses and also for the analysis of population dynamics in the Pacific abalone.

        We present extra-tidal features of spatial configuration of stars around three metal-poor globular clusters (NGC 6266, NGC 6273, NGC 6681) located in the Galactic bulge. The wide-field photometric data were obtained in BVI bands with the MOSAIC II camera at CTIO 4 m Blanco telescope. The derived color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) contain stars in a total 71´×71´area including a cluster and its surrounding field outside of the tidal radius of the cluster. Applying statistical filtering technique, we minimized the field star contaminations on the obtained cluster CMDs and extracted the cluster members. On the spatial stellar density maps around the target clusters, we found overdensity features beyond the tidal radii of the clusters. We also found that the radial density profiles of the clusters show departures from the best-fit King model for their outer regions which support the overdensity patterns.
