We have analyzed H and Ks -band images of the Arches cluster obtained using the NIRC2 instrument on Keck with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. With the help of the LGS AO system, we were able to obtain the deepest ever photometry for this cluster and its neighborhood, and derive the background-subtracted present-day mass function (PDMF) down to 1.3M⊙ for the 5"-9" annulus of the cluster. We find that the previously reported turnover at 6M⊙ is simply due to a local bump in the mass function (MF), and that the MF continues to increase down to our 50 % completeness limit (1.3M⊙) with a power-law exponent of Γ= -0.91 for the mass range of 1.3 < M/M⊙ < 50. Our numerical calculations for the evolution of the Arches cluster show that the Γ values for our annulus increase by 0.1-0.2 during the lifetime of the cluster, and thus suggest that the Arches cluster initially had Γ of -1.0~-1.1 which is only slightly shallower than the Salpeter value.

소형망원경을 이용하여 산개성단 내 단주기 미세 변광성을 체계적으로 탐사하기 위한 보현산 천문대 측광 모니터링 프로그램 Short Period Variability Survey(SPVS)의 일환으로, 젊은 산개성단 NGC 129의 90'×60' 영역에 대한 V필터 시계열 측광 관측을 수행하였다. 성단의 관측은 보현산 천문대 155mm 소형 굴절 망원경과 3K×2K CCD 카메라를 이용하여 2004년 10월 12일부터 2005년 11월 3일까지 총 11일간 수행되었으며, 그 결과 전체 2400장의 V 필터시계열 CCD 영상자료 및 성단의 색-등급도를 얻었다. 시계열 자료의 기기등급을 표준등급으로 변환하기 위하여 앙상블정규화 기법(ensemble normalization technique)을 사용하였다. 측광 후 총 9537개별의 시간에 따른 광도변화를 조사한결과 총 66개의 새로운 변광성을 발견 하였다. 새롭게 찾아낸 변광성들은 DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) 분석과 위상 맞추기 방법(phase-matching technique)을 이용하여 변광 주기를 결정하였다. 결정된 변광성의 주기 및 진폭 변화, 색-등급도 상에서의 변광성의 위치 등을 고려하여 변광 유형을 조사한 결과 9개의 SPB형 변광성과 9개의 δ Scuti형 변광성, 29개의 식변광성, 17개의 장주기 변광성과 기타 2개의 변광성으로 분류할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해, 산개성단에서의 변광성 탐사 연구에 소형망원경이 유용하게 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

구상성단 M30의 20'.5×20'.5 영역에 대한 CCD UBVI 측광 관측을 수행하여 색-등급도로부터 주계열 전향점과 색지수 VTO=18.63±0.05, (B-V)TO=0.44±0.05, (V-I)TO=0.63±0.05를 얻었으며, 색-색도로부터 E(B-V)=0.05±0.01과 중원소 함량의 지표인 UV 색 초과량 δ(U-B)=0.27±0.01을 얻었다. 측광학적인 방법과 분광 관측 자료를 이용하여 중원소 함량 [Fe/H]=-2.05±0.09를 구하였다. 관측된 M30의 광도 함수는 이론적 모델에 비하여 전향점 부근에 비하여 적색 거성열의 초과 현상을 보였다. Hipparcos 위성에서 측정된 삼각 시차로부터 거리가 알려진 준왜성을 이용하여 주계열 맞추기를 하여 거리 지수 (m-M)o=14.75±0.12를 구하였다. 헬륨 함량을 구하기 위하여 R과 R' 방법을 사용하여 Y(R)=0.23±0.02, Y(R')=0.29±0.02를 얻었다. 성단의 나이는 적용하는 방법과 모델에 따라서 10.7 Gyr에서 17 Gyr까지 분산을 보인다.

We investigated the structural parameters of a sample of 30 dwarf galaxies(15 dEs and 15 dS0s) in the Virgo Cluster using i-band images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. Among 28 galaxies for which surface brightness profiles were derived from ellipse fittings, 23 galaxies had a single component that was adequately described by a generalized Sersic function with a shape parameter ranging from n=0.5 to 2, while 5 galaxies(2 dEs and 3 dS0s) had bulge and disk components that were fitted by a generalized Sersic function and an exponential function, respectively. Since the majority of dwarf galaxies in the present sample had a single component, it seems likely that genuine dS0 galaxies that have disk and bulge components are quite rare in the Virgo Cluster. The similarity in structural parameters of genuine dS0 galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with those of Magellanic-type galaxies implies that the progenitors of dwarf lenticular galaxies in the Virgo Cluster were most likely Magellanic-type galaxies if dS0s are harassed late-type spirals.
