        The ultrafine titanium carbonitride () particles below 100 nm in mean size, including various carbon and nitrogen contents (x=0.55~0.9, y=0.1~0.5), were successfully synthesized by new Mg-thermal reduction process. Nanostructured sub-stoichiometric titanium carbide () particles were initially produced by the magnesium reduction of gaseous at and post heat treatments in vacuum were performed for 2 hrs to remove residual magnesium and magnesium chloride mixed with . Finally, well C/N-controled phases were successfully produced by nitrification heat treatment under normal gas atmosphere at for 2 hrs. The values of purity, mean particle size and oxygen content of produced particles were about 99.3%, 100 nm and 0.2 wt.%, respectively.

        Bismuth-telluride based thermoelectric powders were fabricated by two-step planetary milling process which produces bimodal size distribution ranging . The powders were reduced in hydrogen atmosphere to minimize oxygen contents which cause degradation of thermoelectric performance by decreasing electrical conductivity. Oxygen contents were decreased from 0.48% to 0.25% by the reduction process. In this study, both the as-synthesized and the reduced powders were consolidated by the spark plasma sintering process at for 10 min at the heating rate of and then their thermoelectric properties were investigated. The sintered samples using the reduced p-type thermoelectric powders show 15% lower specific electrical resistivity () than those of the as-synthesized powders while Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity do not change a lot. The results confirmed that ZT value of thermoelectric performance at room temperature was improved by 15% due to high electric conductivity caused by the controlled oxygen contents present at bismuth telluride materials.

        경막결정화를 이용한 산화물 사용후연료의 전해환원 공정에서 발생하는 LiCl 염폐기물 내 포함되어 있는 Cs 및 Sr을 분리(농축)에 대한 실험을 수행하였다. 결정화 공정에서 Cs 및 Sr과 같은 불순물들은 불순물들의 용융염 상 및 결정상에 대한 용해도이 차리로 분리되어 최종적으로 작은 양의 LiCl 용융염내에 농축된다. 본 연구에서는 LiCl-CsCl-SrCl2 계에대한 고체-액체 상평형도를 통해 결정화를 통한 분리가능성을 파악하였으며 열전달방정식 의 계산을 통해 경막결정화 운전중 LiCl 용융염상의 온도분포를 예측할 수 있었다. 경막결정화 공정에서 결정성 장 속도는 분리효율에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며 90%의 LiCl 재생율을 가정할 경우 20-25 l/min의 냉각속도 그리고 0.2 g/min·cm2보다 작은 결정성장 속도조건에서 각각의 Cs 및 Sr에 대하여 90% 정도의 분리효율을 나타내었다.

        산화물 사용 후 핵연료를 처리하는 전해환원공정에서는 LiCl 용융염계에서 산소가 생성되는 반응을 수반하게 되 며, 생성된 산소로 인해 반응기의 구조재료를 상당히 부식시킬 수 있는, 화학적으로 심각한 반응환경을 조성한다. 따라서, 고온 용융염을 다루는 전해환원 공정장치를 위해서는 최적의 재료를 선택하는 것이 필수적이다. 본 연구에 서는 리튬용융염, 675℃, 216시간동안 산화분위기에서 코팅이 안 된 초합금과 코팅된 초합금 시편의 고온 부식연구 를 수행하였다. IN713LC 초합금 시편에 aluminized NiCrAlY bond 코팅 후 Y2O3 top 코팅을 하였다. 코팅이 안 된 초 합금은 부식층의 빠른 성장응력과 열적응력에 의한 부식층의 박리로 명확한 무게손실을 보인다. 탑 코팅의 화학적 및 열적 안정성으로 인해 고온 리튬용융염을 다루는 구조재료의 부식 저항성이 증가함을 확인할 수 있었다

        고온 용융염 전해환원 공정은 후행핵연료 주기의 대안 공정인 파이로공정의 산화물 사용후핵연료의 확대 를 위해 필수적인 공정이다. 사용후핵연료는 다성분 산화물로 이루어져 있으며 각 산화물은 전해환원 공정 에서 화학적 특성에 따라 산소를 잃게 된다. 본 연구에서는 건식분말화 공정 이후 전해환원 반응기에 도입되 는 사용후핵연료 조성을 기준으로 각 금속-산소 시스템을 독립적인 이상고용체로 가정하여 전해환원 반응거동을 계산하였다. 전해환원을 Li의 환원과 이어지는 Li과의 화학반응의 결합으로 산정하여 U을 비롯한 금 속 환원 거동을 계산하였다. 계산결과 대부분의 산화물들은 전해환원 공정에 의해 금속으로 전환되는 것으 로 예상되었다. 란타나이드 원소들의 경우 Li2O의 농도가 낮아지면 금속 전환율이 높아지나 대부분 산화물로 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 추가적으로 U3O8의 전해환원 거동에 대해 Li의 확산과 Li과의 화학반응을 고려하 여 반실험적 모델이 제시되었다. 실험데이터를 활용하여 매개변수를 결정하였으며 시간에 대한 환원율 및 전류에 대한 99.9% 환원 시간을 계산하였다.

        Phosphorus exhibits considerable segregation in steelmaking slag. In order to recover phosphorus from slag to K3PO4 via molten iron, a carbothermic reaction using microwave heating was suggested recently. The carbothermic reduction of phosphorus from slag to molten iron using microwave heating was carried out at 2073K. However, at this temperature the thermodynamic properties of both slag and molten iron cannot be determined experimentally. Therefore, the computational approach of the so-called CALPHAD method is very useful to understand the transfer of phosphorus from slag to metal and to enhance this reaction. In the present investigation, a theoretical study of the reduction behavior of phosphorus in slag was carried out at much lower temperatures using the recently developed thermodynamic database in the FactSage program. The calculated results showed reasonable accordance with the experimental data; namely, the thermodynamic database could be applied successfully to higher temperature reactions. The current study found that higher temperature and high SiO2 concentration are favorable for the recovery of phosphorus from slag.

        The electrocatalytic characteristics of oxygen reduction reaction of the PtxM(1-x) (M = Co, Cu, Ni) supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been evaluated in a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). The PtxM(1-x)/MWNTs catalysts with a Pt : M atomic ratio of about 3 : 1 were synthesized and applied to the cathode of PEMFC. The crystalline structure and morphology images of the PtxM(1-x) particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The results showed that the crystalline structure of the Pt alloy particles in Pt/MWNTs and PtxM(1-x)/MWNTs catalysts are seen as FCC, and synthesized PtxM(1-x) crystals have lattice parameters smaller than the pure Pt crystal. According to the electrochemical surface area (ESA) calculated with cyclic voltammetry analysis, Pt0.77Co0.23/MWNTs catalyst has higher ESA than the other catalysts. The evaluation of a unit cell test using Pt/MWNTs or PtxM(1-x)/MWNTs as the cathode catalysts demonstrated higher cell performance than did a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Among the MWNTs-supported Pt and PtxM(1-x) (M = Co, Cu, Ni) catalysts, the Pt0.77Co0.23/MWNTs shows the highest performance with the cathode catalyst of PEMFC because they had the largest ESA.

        To produce alloy powders with only SmFe single phase by reduction-diffusion (R-D) method, the effect of excess samarium oxide on the preparation of Sm-Fe alloy powder during R-D heat treatment was studied. The quantity of samarium oxide was varied from 5% to 50% whereas iron and calcium were taken 0% and 200% in excess of chemical equivalent, respectively. The pellet type mixture of samarium, iron powders and calcium granulars was subjected to heat treatment at 1100 for 5 hours. The R-D treated pellet was moved into deionized water and agitated to separate Sm-Fe alloy powders. After washing them in deionized water several times, the powders were washed with acetic acid to remove the undesired reaction products such as CaO. By these washing and acid cleaning treatment, only 0.03 wt% calcium remained in Sm-Fe alloy powders. It was also confirmed that the content of unreacted -Fe in SmFe matrix gradually decreased as the percentage of samarium oxide is increased. However, there was no significant change above 40% excess samarium oxide.

        Ultra-fine TiC/Co composite powder was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction process without wet chemical processing. The starting powder was prepared by milling of titanium dioxide and cobalt oxalate powders followed by subsequent calcination to have a target composition of TiC-15 wt.%Co. The prepared oxide powder was mixed again with carbon black, and this mixture was then heat-treated under flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase, mass and particle size of the mixture during heat treatment were investigated using XRD, TG-DTA and SEM. The synthesized oxide powder after heat treatment at 700 has a mixed phase of TiO and CoTiO phases. This composite oxide powder was carbothermally reduced to TiC/Co composite powder by the solid carbon. The synthesized TiC/Co composite powder at 1300 for 9 hours has particle size of under about 0.4 m.
