Recently, the fabrication process of the W-Cu nanocomposite powders has been studied to improve the sinterability through the mechanical alloying and reduction of W and Cu oxide mixtures. In this study. the W-Cu composites were produced by mechanochemical process (MCP) using mixtures with two different milling types of low and high energy, respectively. These ball-milled mixtures were reduced in atmosphere. The ball-milled and reduced powders were analyzed through XRD, SEM and TEM. The fine W-Cu powder could be obtained by the high energy ball-milling (HM) compared with the large Cu-cored structure powder by the low energy ball-milling (LM). After the HM for 20h, the W grain size of the reduced W-Cu powder was about 20-30 nm.

The mechanochemical milling of Mg and alloys were carried out to examine the enhancement of hydrogen storage properties of Mg alloys. The hydroge characteristics of the ball-milled products were evaluated with a Sievert-type apparatus and electrochemical test. Various intermediate compounds were obtained by chemical reactions induced during the ball milling of Mg of alloys with C, Ni, and . The system of with 10 wt% C improved markedly the kinetics of hydrogen absorption, while the hydrogen capacities were practically unchanged. The hydrogen storage alloys such as Mg-Ca can be successfully.

Ti-50Ni(at%) and Ti-40Ni-10Cu(at%) alloy powders have been fabricated by ball milling method, and their microstructure and phase transformation behavior were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractions and transmission electron microscopy. In order to investigate the effect of ball milling conditions on transformation behavior, ball milling speed and time were varied. Ti-50Ni alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed more than 250 rpm were amorphous, while those done with the milling speed of 100rpm were crystalline. In contrast to Ti-50Ni alloy powders, Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy powders were crystalline, irrespective of ball milling conditions. DSC peaks corresponding to martensitic transformation were almost discernable in alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed more than 250 rpm, while those were seen clearly in alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed of 100 rpm. This was attributed to the fact that a strain energy introduced during ball milling suppressed martensitic transformation.

Effect of ball filling ratio on the behavior of balls motion and their collision characteristic in a tumbler-ball milling of metal powder are investigated by a computer simulation. The discrete element method and the extended Kelvin model composed of nonlinear spring and nonlinear dashpot were employed in the simulation. It can be possible that analysis of the individual balls motion in a three-dimensional actual mill by the two-dimensional model simulation, since the simulated trajectories of ball paths are in relatively good agreement with the actual ones. It knows that the balls motion in the tumbler-ball mill is strongly influenced by the surface conditions of the balls and mill container wall. The energy consumption of the individual balls during impact and the impact frequency of the individual balls increased with an increase in the ball filling ratio and showed maximum values at about 50-60% ball filling ratio, and then decreased.

Al-Cr-Zr metal powders were prepared by cryo-milling(-75),ambi-milling(25) and warm-milling(200) to investige the effect of milling temperature. The morphogical changes and microstructural evolution of Al-6wt.%Cr-3wt.%Zr metal powder ball milling were investigated by SEM, OM and XRD. The cryo-milling at -75 caused the more refinement of powder particle size than ambi-milling and warm-milling. The partic morpholgy of Al-Cr-Zr metal powders changed changes into spheroidal particles at 25and spherical particles at 200The spherical particles were formed by agglomertion and contiuous wrapping of the spheroidal particles. The calculated Al crystallite size in Al-Cr-Zr metal powders by the Scherer equation were refined rapidly for short milling time -75compared with milling at 25 and 200.

Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders were fabricated by ball milling, and the properties of these powders were characterized. Mixed 50Ti-(50-x)Ni-xCu powders of 5 to 10at.%Cu composition were milled for 100 hours using SUS 1/4" balls in argon atmosphere. Ball to powder ratio was 20:1 and rotating speed was 100 rpm. Tensile strength, microstructure and phase transformation of ball milled Ti-(50-x)Ni-xCu powders were studied. After 100 hours milling, Ti, Ni and Cu elements were alloyed completely and an amorphous phase was formed. Amorphous phase was crystallized to martensite(B 19') and austenite(B2) after heat treatment for 1 hour at . As the Cu contents were increased, tensile strength of extruded 6061Al/TiNiCu was decreased, and B19'martensite phases In the TiNi particles were the causes of high tensile stress of extruded 6061Al/TiNiCu.NiCu.

The pure Ti, Ni and carbon powders were reaction milled to synthesize the TiC-Ni based cermet powders with ultrafine microstructures. After milling, the ultrafine TiC or amorphous Ti-Ni phase was obtained, respectively, according to the milling condition. The effects of milling variables on the synthesizing behavior of the powders were investigated in detail. The sintered TiC-Ni based cermet of the reaction milled powders consisted of very fine TiC of 0.2~1.5m, as compared with that of a commercial cermet of 3~5m. This demonstrates the potenial of reaction milling as an effective processing route for the preparation of cermet materials.
