        2003년 하계 진해만의 수질개선을 위한 육상오염물질 삭감량을 산정하기 위해 생태계 모델을 적용하였다. 모델에 의해 재현된 진해만의 수질은 마산만 측의 내측에서 해양수질 등급 III을 상회하는 수준으로 나타났으며, 등급 II의 수질로 개선하기 위해서는 육상부하를 50% 삭감하는 것이 효율적인 것으로 나타났다. 진해만 전 해역을 목표수질인 화학적 산소요구량 (COD) 농도 2.0mg/L을 만족하는 조 건은 전체 육상부하의 70~90%를 삭감하거나, 전체 육상부하와 저질 용출부하의 50%를 동시에 삭감하여야 하는 것으로 나타났다. 해역 II등급을 유지하기 위해 삭감해야 할 양은 유기물과 영양염을 동시에 삭감할 경우, 유기물 (COD) 5,632kg/day, 용존무기인 481kg/day 및 용존무기질소 7,991kg/day이며, 이 때 오염부하량의 한계 즉, 환경용량은 화학적산소요구량 부하 13,112kg/day, 용존무기인 206kg/day 그리고 용존무기질소 3,425kg/day 이라고 할 수 있다.

        2002년 9월, 12월 그리고 2003년 3월에 걸쳐 진해 국가산업단지 인근의 조사해역에서 총 27개 정점을 선정하고 저서동물 군집의 특성을 파악하였다. 전 조사기간 모두 각각 총 9개 동물군이 확인되었고, 평균 저서동물의 서식밀도는 2,324ind.m-2으로, 일반적인 한국 연안의 저서동물 서식밀도보다 다소 높은 값이었다. 이중 전 계절에서 가장 우점하는 동물군은 다모류로서, 3회 평균 1,713ind.m-2의 서식밀도를 나타내었으

        This study deals with litter which has sunk and accumulated on the sea-bed of the Chinhae Bay obtained by using a beam trawler. The litter collected through the duration of survey (1997~1998) were distributed from 8.76~80.63 items/ha and 3.51~108.39 kg/ha, respectively, in quantities and weights. Especially bulky wastes(shell, tires, motorcycle and refrigerator) were composed of 76% of them, next metal and glasses, 29.5%. The seasonal variability of litters in the bay is large, as 62% in April, next August, 23%, in total weights.These discarded substances have the widespread distribution but varied in each sampled area. Therefore they exist in a significant pollutants, as threatening the fishing activities and near marine environment, and also potential damage to marine resources.

        We calculated the residual current forced by buoyancy, wind stress, and tidal stress in the Chinhae Bay using a three-dimensional diagnostic model. The calculated current was also compared with the observation. The flow directs outward from the central area of the Bay in the upper layer, and also forms eddy-shape stucture in the upper and middle layers. The flow of bottom layer shows an opposite pattern compared to those of top and middle layers. The maximum speed was 6.05 em/see (September) and 3.49 cm/sec (November) in the upper layer, and 4.39 cm/sec on both month in the middle layer. The Kinetic energy of November (8.39xlO' W) was larger than that of September (1.24xlO 'W), mainly resulting from larger buoyancy effect in September. In spite of the roughness of the grid size(1 km) and wind date, the calculated flow shows eorrelation(r=0.71) with the observation. We expect that the correlation be increased by increased by adopting the fine grid and the variable coefficients of diffusion and viscosity.

        진해만은 여름철에 적조가 자주 발생하는 해역으로서 우리나라 남해안 중 해양 오염이 가장 문제시되고 있는 해역중 하나이다. 그러므로 오염된 마산만의 해수가 진해만으로 어떻게 유입, 희석되는가를 알아보고, 만외에서 유입되는 해수의 확산 이동을 조사하기 위하여 대조(1981년 8월 17일)와 소조(1981년 9월 7일) 각 조석에 따라 네 번에 걸쳐 Rhodamine B (중량비 6%) 확산실험을 실시하였다. 그 결과 대조 때 방출 90분 후의 썰물과 밀물 때의 확산계수는 각각 3.0×10 super(3) cm super(2) /sec, 2.8×10 super(3) cm super(2) /sec 이고 소조 때 방출 90분 후의 확산 계수는 밀물 때는 6.2×10 super(2) cm super(2) /sec, 썰물 때는 2.1×10 super(3) cm super(2) /sec로서 소조 때보다 대조 때 더 크게 나타났으며, 다른 해역과 비교해 보면 수영만의 8.2×10 super(2) cm super(2) /sec, 1.12×10 super(3) cm super(2) /sec(Kim: 1981)와 그 값이 거의 비슷하나, 고리에서의 10 super(3) ~10 super(4) cm super(2) /sec(Ro: 1980)보다는 매우 적게 나타났다. 진해만 및 마산만의 경우, 만 입구가 협소하고 남쪽으로 열려 있어서 여름철에 남풍계열의 바람이 강하게 불면 썰물 때라도 표층수가 역류하여 만으로 들어오기 때문에, 특히 소조 때에는 오염물질의 분산이 잘 되지 않고 누적될 가능성이 크게 보인다.

        To find proper water quality management strategy for oxygen consumption organic matters in Jinhae bay, the physical process and net supply/decomposition in terms of COD was estimated by three-dimensional eco-hydrodynamic modeling. The estimation results of physical process in terms of COD showed that transportation of COD was dominant in loading area from land to sea, while accumulation of COD was dominant in middle~bottom level. In case of surface level, the net supply rate of COD was 0~60 mg/m2/day. The net decomposition rate of COD was 0~-0.05 mg/m2/day(-5~-10 m, in depth) to 2 level, and -0.05~-0.20 mg/m2/day(10 m ~) to bottom level. These results indicate that the biological decomposition and physical accumulation of COD are occurred for the most part of Jinhae Bay bottom. The variation of net supply or net decomposition rate of COD as reducing land based input loading is also remarkable. Therefore, it is important to consider both allochthonous and autochthonous oxygen demanding organic matters to improve the water quality of Jinhae Bay.

        The three-dimensional eco-hydrodynamic model was applied to estimate the autochthonous COD caused by production of phytoplankton in Jinhae Bay. A residual current was simulated, using a hydrodynamic model, to have a sightly complicated pattern in the inner part of the bay, ranging from 0.001 to 5 cm/s. In the outer part of the bay, the simulated current flowed out to the south sea with a southward flow at a maximum of 25 cm/s. The results of the ecological model simulation of COD levels showed high concentrations, exceeding 4 mg/L, in the inner bay of Masan, an area of wastewater discharge, and lower levels, approaching less than 1 mg/L, closer to the outer part of the bay. The simulation results of Autochthonous COD by two methods using ecological modeling, showed high ratio over 70% of total COD. Therefore, it is more important to consider nutrients than organic matters in the region for control COD standard.

        Determining factors and temporal & spatial characteristics of COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) at the sea surface in Jinhae bay have been examined by using seasonal data, taken at twenty six stations cver the whole bay during 1989∼1994 by NFRDA. The data have been analyzed in terms of long term means, anomalously large values. Jinhae bay is divided into three regions based on the time mean : mouth of Jinhae bay, inner sea of Masan bay, western sea of Jinhae bay called region 1,2 and 3, respectively. The horizontal distribution of the long term mean of COD at each station is similar to those of nitrogen and phosphorus. Characteristics of whole mean variation in the year shows high range of variation in region 2. It was appear to decreases every year in whole trend. Factors determining seasonal variation in whole COD mean are relative to salinity and nutrient, affected by precipitation in summer. Spatial variation shows high range of fluctuation in region 2 compare to other region. Factors determining of spatial variation of COD was appear to nutrient, affected by pollutant load of land area and bottom sediment. The long term mean of COD at each station is closely related with thats of nutrients. The coorelation coefficient between COD and nitrogen, phosphate phosphorus was found to be high as 0.75, 0.78, respectively. Anomalously large COD was observed 14 times at 6 stations. These stations are located in inner sea of Masan bay(Region 2) and Songjeong bay(Region 1). The seasonal frequency of the observed anomalous COD is large in April, and other seasons are much the same.

        The dicriminant function was introduced to understand the cause and establish the prediction method of red tides occurring in Jinhae Bay, Korea. Two sea regions of Masan and Haengam Bays and Dangdong and Wonmun Bays had different types of causes and patterns for red tides. In Masan and Haengam Bays, the red tides concentrically occurred during June and September. For example, in June the red tides occurred from physical and meteorological factors, which are related to the stratification and the increase in planktons. However, in August the red tides occurred from the water quality environment, based on these conditoins. Futhermore, in September the red tides were caused by the balance between the meteorological and water quality environmental factors. In contrast to those, in Dangdong and Wonmun Bays, the red tides mainly occurred during July and October and the frequency of occurrence was not as much as Masan and Haengam Bays. Especially, in August and September most meteorological and physical factors or water quality environmental factors appeared to contribute to the occurrence of red tides. This indicates that red tides do not easily occur as they are controlled by various environmental factors particularly in these regions. The discriminant functions were applied to predict red tides which they were actually occurred in Masan and Haengam Bays in June. The results showed that they were successful for the prediction of red tide at Haengam Bay but not at Masan Bay. The reason for their discrepancy in Masan Bay could have come from using a slight higher value of pH or COD in May, instead of its value in June.

        The community of phytoplankton and water quality were investigated 5 times from October, 1994 to October, 1995 in the east area of Chinhae Bay. Seasonal changes of environmental parameters were shown general pattern and related to the red tide mechanism of phytoplankton community. Seasonal variations of dissolved oxygen concentrations were affected by the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton community and the increase of COD at the bottom water was occurred after the red tide. The standing stocks of phytoplankton in this study area ranged 202 - 1616 Cells·ml^-1 and the bloom(red tide) was formed from April to July. The diatom species, Skeletonema costatum was a dominant species all the year round and the dinoflagellate species, Alexandrium tamarense and Prorocentrum triestinum were red tide species increased standing stocks in phytoplankton bloom.

        In the Chinhae Bay, Korea, sedimentation rates and sedimentary record of anthropogenic metal loads were determined by ^210Pb dating and heavy metal analysis of four sediment cores. The sedimentation rates varied from 0.16g/㎠/yr(3.1㎜/yr) at Sta. C4, located within narrow waterway to 0.24g/㎠/yr(4.8㎜/yr) at Sta. C1, located in Haengam Bay. Maximum contents of Mn, Zn, Cu and Cr were observed at Sta. C2 located near the mouth of Masan Bay, while minimum contents were observed at Sta. C4. Mn/Fe ratios at Sta. C2 and Sta. C4 showed gradually increasing and decreasing downward, respectively, in the upper layer of sediment cores. This suggests that Mn may be diagenetically redistributed in highly reduced environment. At Sta. C2, the concentrations of Zn and Cu began to increase from 1920s by anthropogenic input and have been remarkablely increasing since mid 1960s. At Sta. C3, located near Sungpo, anthropogenic input of these two elements has also slightly increased after 1970s. However, pollution of these two elements was not significant in Haengam Bay(Sta. C1) and Chiljun waterway(Sta. C4). The pollution of Co, Ni and Cr was not remarkable in all core samples except surface sediment of Sta. C2. The total input of anthropogenic Zn and Cu since 1920s was estimated to be 28∼792 ㎍/㎠ and 0∼168㎍/㎠, respectively. Sta. C2 showed remarkablely higher values relative to other stations: anthropogenic loads of Zn and Cu constituted 27% and 29% of the total sedimentary inventories at the present day, respectively. Fe, Ni, Cr and Co contents showed good correlation(r>0.8) with each other. Anthropogenic Zn and Cu also showed a very good positive correlation(>0.9). However, correlation between these two group of element was quite scattered, indicating different sources and geochemical behaviors.
