Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a paramount factor in air pollution of the environment. VOCs are vastly present in the wastewater discharged by the pharmaceutical industries. As it is evaporative in nature, it enters the environment spontaneously and causes air pollution, global warming, acid rain and climate change. VOCs must be treated before discharging or any other aerobic methods using an efficient catalyst. As the catalytic oxidation in the liquid phase is facile compared to the gas phase, this study investigated on catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of VOCs in model and real pharmaceutical wastewater. The model compounds of toluene-, ethylbenzene- and chlorobenzene-contaminated waters were treated separately along with the VOCs present in real pharmaceutical wastewater using a tungsten-based carbon catalyst. The tungsten was impregnated on the low-cost activated carbon matrix as it has good selectivity and catalytic property toward VOCs for facile catalytic operations. The metal catalysts were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction studies, and scanning electron microscopy with elemental and mapping analysis. The treatability was monitored by total organic carbon, ultra-violet spectroscopy and high-pressure liquid chromatography analysis. The tungsten-impregnated activated carbon matrix (WACM) has a catalytic efficiency toward toluene by 85.45 ± 1.78%, ethylbenzene by 93.9 ± 1.16%, chlorobenzene by 85.9 ± 2.26% and pharmaceutical VOCs by 85.05 ± 1.73% in 20 treatment cycles. The results showed that WACM worked efficiently in VOCs treatment, preventing the environment from air pollution. Furthermore, liquid-phase oxidation could easily be implementable on an industrial scale.

,  , Temperature-related parameters of Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acarina: Tetranychidae) development were estimated and a stage-structured matrix model was developed. The lower threshold temperatures were estimated as 8.4℃ for eggs, 9.9℃ for larvae, 9.2℃ for protonymphs, and 10.9℃ for deutonymphs. Thermal constants were 113.6, 29.1, 29.8, and 33.4 degree days for eggs, larvae, protonymphs, and deutonymphs, respectively. Non-linear development models were established for each stage of P. citri. In addition, temperature-dependent total fecundity, age-specific oviposition rate, and age-specific survival rate models were developed for the construction of an oviposition model. P. citri age was categorized into five stages to construct a matrix model: eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs and adults. For the elements in the projection matrix, transition probabilities from an age class to the next age class or the probabilities of remaining in an age class were obtained from development rate function of each stage (age classes). Also, the fecundity coefficients of adult population were expressed as the products of adult longevity completion rate (liiongevity) by temperature-dependent total fecundity. To evaluate the predictability of the matrix model, model outputs were compared with actual field data in a cool early season and hot mid to late season in 2004. The model outputs closely matched the actual field patterns within 30 d after the model was run in both the early and mid to late seasons. Therefore, the developed matrix model can be used to estimate the population density of P. citri for a period of 30 d in citrus orchards.

This study proposes the generation mechanism of various design matrix using generalized linear model for design of experiment. Design generation method of GLM analysis, factorial design(FD) with center points, ANOVA design with lack-of-fit test, and response surface design are introduced. In central composite(CC) design, orthogonal blocking and fractional factorial design(FFD) are presented. We compare the design of Box-Benhken(BB) and face-centred central compsite design.

This paper reports generating creative ideas based on customer needs using Kano Model and Importance-Differentiation Matrix (I-D Matrix). Nowadays, every customer demands creative ideas on product innovations in order to be satisfied her needs. However, most existing methods are limited to get creative ideas that reflect customer needs. Any creative ideas that do not fully reflect customer needs are obviously more difficult to succeed in the market than those that reflect customer needs. This paper distinguishes each quality elements the customer needs in terms of Kano Model. And it presents the effective ways of generating creative ideas by I-D Matrix in order to overcome current uppermost limits.

Deraeocoris brevis Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a generalist predator and is a key natural enemy in pear orchards in the northwestern United States. Although D. brevis undoubtedly contributes to the regulation of major pear pests, pesticides often disrupt its activity and reduce its effectiveness as a biological control agent. A temperature-dependent stage-structured matrix model was developed to analyse the population dynamics of D. brevis influenced by insecticides. In this study, impacts of acetamiprid on field populations of D. brevis were analysed. The age class of D. brevis was categorized into four stages: eggs, small nymphs (1st to 3rd instar), large nymphs (4th to 5th instar), and adults. Probabilities for each element in the projection matrix were estimated using published temperature-dependent developmental data of D. brevis. Transition probabilities from an age class to the next age class or the probabilities of remaining in the age class were obtained from development rate function of each stage (age classes). The fecundity coefficients of adult population were the products of adult longevity completion rate (1/longevity) and temperature-dependent total fecundity. Also, direct and indirect residual effects of acetamiprid were incorporated into the model. The model results were much overestimated compared with observed actual data from 25d after model running. Such a discrepancy might be occurred from various reasons such as an intra-species competition, successful fecundity rate, etc. Further, the improvement and application of the model were discussed.

Growth behavior and kinetics of grains in a liquid matrix has been studied by computer simulation for various physical and processing conditions. The kinetics of growing and dissolving grains were considered to follow those of single crystals in a matrix. Depending on the shape of crystals, rounded or faceted, different kinetic equations were adopted for growing grains and an identical equation for dissolving grains. Effects of such critical parameters as step free energy, temperature, and liquid volume fraction were evaluated.

We previously reported that purified hepatocyte-like cells derived from human embryonic stem cell (hESC) promoted the liver tissue recovery not only by cell replacement, but also by delivering proteins (secretome) that enhance endogenous host liver regeneration. In this study, we investigated possible therapeutic effects of secretomes obtained from undifferentiated hESC and mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC), and explored the underlying mechanism in a mouse model of chronic liver injury. Mice pre-intoxicated with dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) were treated with single intraperitoneal injection of secretome or medium used to support the growth of hESCs or hMSCs. Both hESC- and MSC-secretomes induced robust host liver regeneration, as determined by biochemical and histological analyses. The expression of MMP2 was significantly increased in the liver that received hESC- or hMSC-secretome, compared to control groups. In contrast, expression of α-SMA, a hallmark of activated hepatic stellate cells, was profoundly decreased after administration of both secretomes. These results suggest that hESCs and MSCs may release soluble factors that support the host tissue regeneration of chronically injured liver.
