        This research aims to understand how academic articles stimulate knowledge progress by addressing two questions: Does the level of contribution vary between different methods of research (e.g., conceptual, theoretical, and empirical)? How do we assess the potential of scholarly articles to impact and further innovate the field?

        The purpose of this paper is to summarize research trends and analyze major discussions of previous studies on language policy and planning from a research historical perspective. In order to accomplish this purpose, this paper firstly established a database of related research lists through a complete enumeration survey of research articles by Korean researchers published in Korean academic journals. Then, based on the database, this paper summarized research trends of preceding studies by fields (status, corpus, education, etc.), by topics (language rank/function, orthographic norm, national language education, etc.), by relevant countries/regions (Korea, Asia, Europe, etc.). Finally, dividing the preceding studies into those related to Korea and those related to foreign countries, this paper analyzed major discussions by fields and topics based on representative and recent preceding studies. 'Not only does the aforementioned summary and analysis have research historical significance for preceding studies on language policy and planning, but 'they can also contribute to exploring the tasks and directions of future research.

        Much research has not been conducted on how classroom-based research articles concerning teaching effectiveness in the ESL/EFL classroom have changed over time, in spite of deep interest in the field. Therefore, this study aims to examine the characteristics of research articles on effective teaching in the ESL/EFL classroom, focusing specifically on articles from TESOL Quarterly. For this purpose, this study searched articles using three key terms; effective teaching, ESL/EFL, and activity. Articles which included those terms were investigated, depending on research topic and publication year, and four key facts were found; the importance of teachers’ input (older articles), a focus on group or peer work (newer articles), teachers’ education, and the use of students’ native languages. While students preferred teachers’ reliable and explicit input in the past, modern articles tended to recommend more frequent interactions among peer groups in the English learning classroom. Limited resources in teaching contexts asked for additional qualifications from ESL/EFL teachers, thus emphasizing teacher education as an important factor for effective teaching. Lastly, the use of students’ native language had a positive influence on learning English. The findings of this study suggest some implications for how effective teaching in Korean context could be implemented.

        In this research synthesis, a total of 313 studies on English learning motivation published in South Korea from 2000 to 2017 were reviewed. The data were categorized into four criteria: publication year, research method, participant, and research topic. First, the annual trend clearly demonstrated that the number of motivation research showed a steady growth. The dominant research method was quantitative (207 papers) over qualitative (40 papers) and mixed methods (48 papers). University students (157 papers) were major population in English learning motivation research followed by junior high (36 papers), elementary (30 papers), high school students (30 papers), research synthesis (17 papers), and kindergarten students (3 papers). Most research focused on identifying specific subcomponents of English learning motivation in a particular research context. The study suggests that future research needs to focus more on diverse student group such as home-schoolers. Also, the use of research synthesis needs to be encouraged in order to capture the complex nature of English learning motivation.

        Kang, Hyeon-Seok. 2016. “Current Research Trends in Overseas Sociolinguistics: An Analysis Based on Recent Sociolinguistic Journal Articles and Conferences”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 24(3). 1~35. This paper is an attempt to analyze the current trends in sociolinguistic research overseas, focusing on sociolinguistic studies in the US and Britain. Three main analyses are performed in this research, i.e., analyses of the Journal of Sociolinguistics articles published in 2010~2015 years, of the sociolinguistic conferences held in 2015, and of the sociolinguistic session titles of the LSA meetings held in 2010~2015 years. The results of the analyses suggest that anthropological linguistics, language variation, discourse analysis, and language contact still remain as the most influential subfields of sociolinguistics, while research fields of sociophonetics, social media studies, language landscape, and documentary linguistics have been establishing themselves as new research areas since 1990s.

        The purpose of this study was to examine the state of the articles in the Korean Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and overall research trends in this field in an effort to grasp the reality of the Journal and suggest some of the right directions for the development of research in this field. 332 articles that were printed in the Korean Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology over the past decade (2003-2012) were selected for the purpose of analysis. As a result of analysing the 332 articles in 52 issues of the Journal, it's found that a mean of 6.3 articles were contained in each issue. As for the form of article, original articles was more common than case reports, which were respectively used in 275 articles (82.8%) and 57 articles (17.2%). Concerning research methods by year, cell culture was most prevailing (124 articles, 37.3%), followed by clinicopathologic study (68, 20.5%), case report (62, 18.8%), animal experiments (28, 8.4%), clinical trial study (28, 8.4%) and others (22, 6.6%). As to the number of researchers, the majority of the articles were written by two or more researchers. The most common number of researchers was three (66 articles, 19.9%), and the number of the articles written by two (49, 14.8%) was similar to that of the articles written by four (47, 14.2%). 38 articles (11.4%) were written by eight researchers or more. Regarding the language of the articles, Korean was used in 213 articles (64.2%), and English was used in 119 articles (35.8%). As for the number of references, this number ranged from a low of zero(in the articles related to the history of pathology) to a high of 71, and the average number of references was 27.91. In relation to the themes of research, the largest number of the articles (47, 32.6%) dealt with oral squamous cell carcinoma, followed by diseases related to odontogenic carcinoma (21, 14.5%), diseases related to odontogenic cyst (17, 11.7%), salivary gland tumor (seven, 4.8%) and granuloma (five, 3.5%). The efforts by this study to explore the shifts of articles and recent research trends are expected to provide useful information on how to accelerate the identity building of this journal and the development of research in oral and maxillofacial pathology.

        This is an interdisciplinary study based on Library and Information Science and English Education through the examination of scholarly communication on English education objectively. For this study, three scholarly journals English Teaching, Journal of The Applied Linguistics Association of Korea, and Foreign Languages Education were selected through surveys. A total of 1,091 research articles were analyzed in terms of the pattern of article production and writers, research topics, research methodologies, and research participants. Content analysis was performed to clarify the distinction between these three journals. The results showed that topics on language skills were the most examined out of the 16 categories in ET and FLE. On the other hand, topics on SLA ranked first in AL. In terms of methodology, quantitative research was conducted more frequently than qualitative and mixed methods research from the three journals. And in terms of participants, college students, including graduate students ranked first from the three journals. The findings suggest that scholarly communication needs to be extended to a broader context including students, classroom teachers and more researchers from the public and private sectors.

        이 연구는 1991년부터 2003년까지 발간된 〈교정연구〉에 실린 논문에 대한 내용분석을 통해서 교정학의 연구영역과 연구동향에 관한 논의를 하고 있다. 총 207편의 논문을 분석의 대상으로 하여 연구주제와 연구방법론적 특성과 경향을 밝혀내고 있다. 그 주요 결과를 보면 먼저, 연구주제는 행형관련 주제에 국한되지 않고 상당히 다양했으나, 주제별로 상대적 중요도는 달랐다. 교정행정과 수용자관리, 그리고 교정처우의 법률적, 제도적인 논의는 풍부한 반면 교정의 다른 축인 수용자의 일상생활이나 독특한 문화를 이해하는 논의, 그리고 교정 프로그램의 실질적 효과를 측정하는 효과분석 논문은 양적으로 상당히 미미한 수준이었다. 한편 연구주제에 접근하는 방식인 방법론에 있어서는 대부분이 기술(description)수준의 문헌연구였으며, 실증연구인 경우에도 추론적 통계(inferential statistics)보다는 기술통계(descriptive statistics)를 제시하는 수준에 머물러 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 보다 교정학의 발전을 위해 더 관심이 주어져야 할 주제와 방법론적 향상을 위한 제언을 제시하고 있다.

        본 연구의 목적은 아들러 개인심리학에 기반하여 수행된 연구 동향을 분석하여 아들러 개인심리학 연구의 방향을 설정하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 1976년 1월부터 2018년 8월까지 발표 된 학술지 170편, 학위논문 224편을 연구시기, 연구대상, 연구내용, 연구방법, 핵심개념, 연구변인으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 시기별로는 2008년부터 연구가 급증하였다. 연구대상자별로는 학생들(초등학생, 청소년, 대학생·대학원생)을 대상으로 주로 연구되었고, 특히 청소년을 대상으로 가장 많이 연구되었다. 연구내용별로는 개인심리학 핵심개념과 다른 변인간의 관계를 밝히는 관련요인 연구가 가장 많이 이루어졌고, 다음으로 효과연구, 이해연구, 프로그램개발연구 순으로 많이 이루어졌다. 연구방법별로는 조사연구가 가장 많이 이루어졌고, 다음으로 실험연구, 혼합연구 순으로 많이 이루어졌다. 핵심개념별로는 격려가 가장 많이 연구되었고, 다음으로 개인심리학, 사회적 관심, 생활양식, 열등감 순으로 많이 연구되었다. 연구변인별로는 핵심개념이 독립변인으로 사용된 연구가 가장 많았고, 다음으로는 종속변인, 매개변인 순으로 많이 이루어졌다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 논의하고 후속연구를 제안하였다.

        This paper reports on an analysis of English research article introductions written by English native speaking authors and Korean authors, using Swales` (1990) Create A Research Space (CARS) model. Data analysis leads to a modified version of the CARS model. The results of the analysis based on the revised one reveal that the NS and the NNS authors employ slightly but certainly different rhetorical strategies in writing research article introductions, which has pedagogical implications. Compared to the NS authors, the Korean authors are seen to employ the strategies of "claiming centrality" and "continuing tradition" slightly more often. The Korean authors justify their research by stating "a problem in the real world" more often and summarize principal findings less often.
