Virtual reality (VR) simulation in nursing education, especially in the teaching of VR simulations just prior to clinical practice, has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of clinical practice and better prepare nursing students for patient care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a preclinical VR simulation education program on the development of critical thinking, self-efficacy, problem-solving ability, and perceived clinical competency among undergraduate nursing students. The study was conducted between May and June 2021 using a pretest-posttest design with a control group. A total of 42 nursing students were recruited through convenience sampling from two separate classes. The intervention group participated in VR simulation education, while the control group engaged in lecture-based education, before beginning clinical practice. Assessments were conducted before preclinical education and after completing clinical practice using structured questionnaires. The data was analyzed using chi-square tests, independent t-tests, and ANCOVA. The findings indicated that the intervention group had a significantly higher score in perceived clinical competency compared to the control group (F = 5.25, p = 0.029) after controlling for pretest scores. However, there were no statistically significant differences in critical thinking, self-efficacy, or problem-solving abilities between the two groups. These findings suggest that preclinical VR simulation education is partially effective in preparing nursing students for their clinical practice, underscoring the need for a balanced educational approach that integrates VR with clinical practice to develop a full spectrum of nursing skills and knowledge.
Purpose: This study aims to describe the experience of nursing students who used a virtual simulation program for their nursing practicum. Method: Structured debriefing papers were collected from 65 senior nursing students using a convenient sampling method for this qualitative study. Conventional content analysis method was used for data analysis. Results: The study’s findings derived three theme clusters. The theme clusters were “satisfied by leading role in nursing practice and repetitive training,” “gained nursing responsibility and confidence in applying the learning into clinical practice,” and “recognized the limitations of customized nursing care.” Conclusion: The results of this study provided insight into nursing students' virtual simulation-based practical training experiences in the context of the Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to explore same-age-tutoring experiences for fundamental nursing practice in peer learners. Method: Content analysis was performed on the collected data. Participants were 14 nursing students. Data were collected from September 19, 2018 to November 2, 2018. Results: Three theme clusters were extracted as follows: 1) autonomous learning environment 2) meeting learning needs 3) motivation to learn. Conclusion: The results can contribute to understanding peer learners’ same-age-tutoring education experiences. Further, they can provide foundational data for establishing same-age tutoring education strategies to improve nursing skills and knowledge, helping nursing students adapt to clinical practice.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to explore the experiences of simulation education to undergraduate nursing students who have defected from North Korea.
Methods: Individual in-depth interviews with nine students were conducted using semi-structured interview and open question. Data were collected December 2014 to April 2015 and analyzed using Colaizzi phenomenological method.
Results: Three essential themes were extracts that were as follows 1) Confronting another barrier 2) Reflecting on nursing competency through simulation education 3) Beginning of adaptation to the nursing education
Conclusion: The results can contribute to an understanding of the simulation education experience of undergraduate nursing students who have defected from North Korea. In addition, these results will provide foundational data in establishing simulation education strategies to improve nursing competency, helping them adapt to nursing education in Korea.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the first learning experiences of undergraduate nursing students in team based high-fidelity simulation. Methods: The participants in this study were 13 undergraduate students at a university in Korea. The students were place in a setting of high-fidelity simulation to manage neurological patients. Data were collected from August, 2013 to September, 2013, through in-depth interviews and were analyzed on the basis of Colaizzi’s phenomenological methodology. Results: Five essential themes were extracts that were as follows 1) Thoughts about patients through the training manikin 2) Feeling of being engaged in practical training 3) Recognition of the importance of the team and teammates 4) Evaluation and analysis of the education content 5) Prospects of improving the capacity for nursing practice. Conclusion: Although the students experienced simulation practicum for the first time, it was noticeable that they tried to actively utilize their theoretical knowledge on the training high-fidelity manikin during simulation practicum. Also, it was observed that they recognized the importance of cooperating with their teammates through team role-playing, assuming a professional attitude as a result. Furthermore, analysis on the content of the education and self-evaluation would help foster the capacity to provide total care for patients.
