This study was designed to investigate the effects of green tea extract on aluminum-induced damage to phospholipid content in old rat cerebral tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that aluminum is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Forty Sprague-Dawley old male rats weighing 350±10 g were divided into four groups, consisting of a control group (CON), 40 ppm aluminum sulfate group (Al-40), green tea water extract group (GTWE), and 40 ppm aluminum sulfate and green tea water extract groups (Al-40+GTWE) and kept on their respective diets for 12 weeks. In order to discover the influence of aluminum on cerebral tissue of old male rats, the serum aluminum concentration and phospholipid composition were compared between the aluminum-treated group and the normal group. The results showed that the serum aluminum concentration was higher in the aluminum sulfate-treated group than in the normal group. The cerebral tissue phospholipid concentration decreased significantly in the aluminum sulfate treated group as compared to the normal group. The results of this experiment show that increase of aluminum concentration in experimental animals causes the rise of serum aluminum and phospholipid concentrations, phenomena that are very similar to those shown in Alzheimer’s disease., The results of this experiment, together with reports that aluminum is a cause of neurofibrillary tangles in cerebral tissue, therefore demonstrate the possibility that aluminum is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Green tea water extract is also shown to be an effective therapeutic candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

This study demonstrates that pork cholesterol levels are reduced in finishing swine fed β-cyclodextrin (βCD). The study subjects were 120 swine fed their respective chow diets containing 0, 5, 7, or 10% βCD for 35 consecutive days. Plasma total lipids, triglyceride and total cholesterol of the βCD- treated group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). The levels of plasma lipid were significantly decreased by 63.22 mg, 73.98 mg, and 82.12 mg in the finishing swine group fed βCD at 5%, 7%, and 10% , respectively, compared to those in the control group (p<0.05). When 5, 7, and 10% βCD was administered to finishing swine, the triacylglyceride levels were decreased by 56.24 mg, 55.48 mg, and 60.02 mg, and total cholesterol concentration was reduced by 25.05 mg, 27.17 mg, and 30.19 mg, respectively, compared to those in the control group (p<0.05). Excretion of total steroid significantly (p<0.05) increased with increase of βCD supplementation. The cholesterol levels of swine back fat, belly, loin, and ham were significantly decreased with increase of βCD supplementation (p<0.05). The pork cholesterol was significantly (p<0.05) reduced by 15.31% in the βCD-treated group, compared to that of the control group. These results suggest that feeding βCD to finishing swine may produce novel functional pork with low cholesterol levels.

This study was carried out to investigate change of ginsenoside contents according to tissue ratio in ginseng root by age and diameter. The epidermis-cortex and xylem-pith extent, fresh weight, dry weight of ginseng increased with the root age increase. They increased higher in xylem-pith than in epidermis-cortex. The ratio of epidermis-cortex decreased and xylem-pith increased as the main root diameter increased. In case of same diameter, the xylem-pith ratio increased by the increase of root age. The epidermis-cortex ratio was 4 > 5 > 6 years, respectively. The total 10 ginsenosides of epidermis- cortex increased with the root age increase. However, the total ginsenoside of xylem-pith decreased and it was 2~5 times lower than epidermis-cortex. The most of ginsenoside contents existed in epidermis-cortex. The diameter decrease in main root is related to the increase of epidermis-cortex ratio. It leads to increase of ginsenoside contents. In order to select high level of ginsenoside cultivar, it suggested that it should be selected main root having narrow diameter and lower epidermis- cortex ratio.

The aim of the present study was to update the calibration that is used for the measurement of the total nitrogen content in the rice plant samples by using the visible and near infrared spectrum. Before the equation merge, correlation coefficient of calibration equation for nitrogen content on each rice parts was 0.945 (Leaf), 0.928 (Stem), and 0.864 (Whole plant), respectively. In the calibration models created by each part in the rice plant under the various regression method, the calibration model for the leaf was recorded with relatively high accuracy. Among of those, the calibration equation developed by Partial least squares (PLS) method was more accurate than the Multiple linear regression (MLR) method. The calibration equation was sensitive based on variety and location variations. However, we have merged and enlarged various of the samples that made not only to measure the nitrogen content more accurately, but also later sampling populations became more diversified. After merging, R2 value becomes more accurate and significantly to 0.950 (L.), 0.974 (S.), 0.940 (W.). Also, after removal of outlier, R2 values increased into 0.998, 0.995, and 0.997. In view of the results so far achieved, Standard error of prediction (SEP) and SEP (C) were reduced in the stem and whole plant. Biases were reduced in the leaf, stem as well as whole plant. Slopes were high in the stem. Standard deviation reduced in the stem but R2 was high in the stem and whole plant. Result was indicated that calibration equation make update, and updating robust calibration equation from merge function and multi-variate calibration.
