        When a radial collector well is installed and operated for agricultural purposes, negative impacts may be observed over time due to the clogging of horizontal arms, such as reduced groundwater discharge and water quality deterioration. When radial collector well No. 2 was rehabilitated using the high-pressure impulse generation technique, the specific capacity and transmissivity were increased by 43.1 and 100.6%, respectively. In contrast, according to air surging, the specific capacity and transmissivity increased by 33.8 and 85.8%, respectively, compared to the initial rate before rehabilitation. During the operation of radial collector wells since construction, the time of well rehabilitation can be effectively determined by continuously monitoring the groundwater level and pumping rate of the radial collector wells, thereby preventing a decrease in productivity.

        Fly ash consists of various metal oxides which can remove SO2 gas by the catalyst effect. When fly ash is added in the preparation process of pitch-based activated carbon, the pitch particles aggregate and fly ash is embedded in the activated carbon. To increase SO2 gas removal performance, activated carbon was prepared by surface-treated fly ash and petroleum-based pitch. Carboxyl groups were introduced into the fly ash by malic acid treatment. The introduced carboxyl groups acted as an activation agent to create micropore around the fly ash, and created micropores were exposed to the fly ash outside of the activated carbon. The exposed fly ash increased removal amount of SO2 gas by a catalytic effect of the metal oxides. The SO2 gas removal performance improved by 34% because of the catalyst effect of the exposed fly ash and improvement in the micropore structure in the activated carbon.

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the physicochemical properties of jelly made from fermented red ginseng concentrate (FRGC) that can be easily absorbed and digested for the health promotion of the elderly. The pH of the jellies tended to decrease with increasing concentration of FRGC. Soluble solid content has significantly higher value when added more than 2%, and the water content of the sample was significantly lower when the FRGC was added 4%. As the amount of FRGC was increased, the total color difference increased, and the hardness of samples decreased significantly. On the other hand, the total ginsenoside contents of the FRGC was 45.50 mg/g. As the concentration of FRGC increased, the content of polyphenol and flavonoids increased. The increasing pattern of polyphenols and flavonoids showed a similar trend. As the content of FRGC increased, ABTS free radical scavenging activity significantly increased (p<0.05), and in the control, the minimum value (62.6 AEAC) and the 4% sample were highest (116.2 AEAC). DPPH radical scavenging activity was like that of ABTS radical scavenging activity. However, there was no significant difference in DPPH radical scavenging activity of 3% and 4% red ginseng jelly.

        Background: The longitudinal arch is important for individuals with pes planus. The toe spread out exercise (TSO) has been widely used to continuously support the longitudinal arch by increasing the abductor hallucis (AbdH) muscle activation. However, the AbdH muscle is commonly lack of the sufficient activation during the TSO especially in individuals with pes planus. Objects: This study was performed to investigate the effect of arch support on the muscle activity and strength of the AbdH during TSO in standing position in individuals with pes planus. Methods: Twenty subjects with pes planus between 20 and 30 years of age participated in this study. The muscle activity and strength of the AbdH were measured using surface EMG system and the Smart KEMA tensiometer system. The AbdH muscle was evaluated during TSO between individuals with and without longitudinal arch support in standing position. The longitudinal arch was supported by using the insole. The paired t-test was used. The level of statistical significance was set at α = 0.05. Results: The muscle activity and strength of the AbdH during TSO with arch support in standing position was significantly greater than that without arch support. Conclusion: The muscle activity and strength of the AbdH during TSO in standing position can be influenced by the longitudinal arch support in individuals with pes planus. The AbdH strengthening during TSO in standing with arch support can be recommended especially in individuals with pes planus in the clinical settings.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the extraction yield and physicochemical characteristics of mucin from the epidermal mucus of Misgurnus mizolepis. Ninety percent ethanol produced the highest yield of mucin. At higher concentrations, mucin had more elastic properties, as revealed by dynamic viscoelasticity measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that mucin is a thermostable glycoprotein. Denaturation enthalpy increased as mucin concentration increased. Mucin inhibited the growth of both Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus, but had better antimicrobial activity in the former. Mucin also exhibited antioxidant activity, equivalent to 66.64% of that of L-cysteine. Mucin inhibited elastase activity and MMP-1 & MMP-2 expression activity, and induced hyaluronic acid expression. It is indicating that mucin is effective in moisturizing and anti-aging the skin. Thus, mucin from the epidermal mucus of Misgurnus mizolepis could have great potential as a non-food material in various industries.

        In this study, the effects of heat-moisture treatment (boiling or steaming for 45 min) prior to hot air drying (70 o C for 8 h) on water activity (Aw), moisture (MC), Brix, color, and texture of dried sweet potato slices were investigated to identify the best pretreatment condition for producing dried sweet potato with the best eating quality. Dried sweet potato slices pretreated by boiling (BL) showed significantly lower Aw, MC, and hardness while Brix was significantly higher than with steaming (ST) treatment. There were no significant differences for the color, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and brittleness indexes. At 8 h drying, the Aw, MC, Brix, and hardness of the BL and ST samples were 0.81 and 0.82, 19.71% and 25.53%, 53.80% and 49.40%, and 20.49 kg/cm 2 and 31.98 kg/ cm 2 , respectively. This information will be useful for manufacturers in the production of dried sweet potato slices. These findings provide evidence of the feasibility of heat-moisture treatments in the production of dried sweet potato.

        Flavonoids are a group of plant polyphenol secondary metabolites, which widely exist in plant systems. Recently, flavonoids from plant-based sources have been gaining more interest due to their versatile biological activities. The biological activities of flavonoids are dependent upon their chemical structures, which in turn rely on their structural class, level of hydroxylation, substitution pattern, connection position, existence of C2=C3 double bond, and level of polymerization. Flavonoids are considered nutraceuticals in diet. They help prevent many chronic and degenerative illnesses through various biological activities, such as free radical scavenging, anti-lipid peroxidation, and xanthine oxidase inhibition, as well as their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer activities. The goal of the present review is to evaluate flavonoids’ chemical structural features and their biological activities as they relate to preventing chronic diseases affecting human health, and further navigate the relationship between the chemical structure and their biological function.

        A γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) producing microorganism was isolated from Sun-Tae Jeotgal, a Korean traditional fermented seafood. Two thousand presumptive lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates were screened for GABA production by thin layer chromatography. One isolate, T118, produced GABA profusely, and identified as Lactobacillus brevis. Growth of Lb. brevis T118 was examined during 120 h cultivation in MRS broth under different conditions. Lb. brevis T118 grew well at 30-37℃, initial pH of 4-7, and up to 5% NaCl (w/v). A gene, gadB, encoding glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) was cloned by PCR. gadC encoding a glutamate/GABA antiporter was cloned and gadC located immediately upstream of gadB, indicating gadCB operon structure. The operon structure was confirmed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. gadB was overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and recombinant GAD was purified. The size of recombinant GAD was 54.4 kDa by SDS-PAGE, which matched well with the calculated size from the nucleotide sequence.

        The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of feed types (powder vs. pellet) from potato by-product containing glycoalkaloid on rumen fermentation with different rumen pH (low vs. high) using in vitro technique. Rumen fluid was collected from two cannulated Hanwoo heifers before morning feeding (high rumen pH at 6.71) and 3 h after feeding (low rumen pH at 6.20). A 0.5 gram of powder or pellet from potato by-product was incubated in the rumen buffer for 48 h at 39℃. Four replications for each treatment were used along with two blanks. Pellet had higher (p<0.05) the immediately degradable fraction, the fractional degradation rate, and the lag phase than those of powder. However, feed type had no effects on the potentially degradable fraction and the total degradable fraction. In fermentation characteristics, powder had higher (p<0.05) concentrations of ammonia-N, total volatile fatty acid (VFA), and acetate than those of pellet. In addition, a high rumen pH had higher (p<0.05) concentrations of ammonia-N and acetate, but lower (p<0.05) total VFA concentration than those of a low rumen pH. The interaction effects between feed type and rumen pH were found on the total degradable fraction and concentrations of ammonia-N, total VFA, and acetate. The present study concluded that generally feed type had no effects on rumen degradation kinetics, but potato by-product in the powder form is recommended due to produce higher fermentation characteristics than in the pellet form.

        특정기업이 경쟁사의 제휴 파트너와 제휴관계를 맺는 것은 실제 경영 현장에서 드물지 않게 볼수 있는 기업간 제휴의 한 형태이다. 본 연구는 그러한 형태의 전략적제휴에 대한 주식 시장에서의 반응을 분석함으로써, 경쟁기업의 제휴 파트너와 맺는 전략적제휴가 기업의 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 탐색하였다. 미국 소프트웨어 회사들이 1995-2005 사이에 맺은 1,332개의 전략적제휴 자료를 사건연구방법(event study)을 통해 분석한 결과 경쟁기업의 제휴파트너와 맺는 전략적제휴는 그렇지 않은 전략적제휴에 비해 더 높은 누적초과수익율을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 특정기업과 경쟁기업의 자원유사성이 높을 경우, 그리고 경쟁기업의 기업성과가 높을 경우에는 경쟁 기업의 파트너와 맺는 전략적제휴의 가치창출 효과가 약해지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통 해 본 연구는 경쟁자를 고려한 제휴전략 수립의 중요성을 보여준다.

        A new WRKY transcription factor gene was isolated by ESTs screening from a cDNA library of suspension cultured cells of Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). The 2,285 bp cDNA fragment, IbWRKY, was sequenced, from which a 505 amino acid residue protein was deduced. A search of the protein BLAST database identified significant similarity to other plant WRKY31 protein sequences. RT-PCR analysis showed expression patterns of IbWRKY31 in various intact tissues and suspension cultured cells of Sweet potato, and in leaves exposed to different stresses. The IbWRKY31 gene was highly expressed in suspension cultured cells. In leaf tissues, IbWRKY31 showed strong expression during salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate treatments. Expression of IbWRKY31 was also induced under various abiotic stress and pathogen infection conditions, such as wounding, H2O2, MV, PEG, NaCl, and bacterial pathogen infection. These results suggest that IbWRKY31 is involved in plant responses to various stress conditions, such as abiotic stresses and pathogen infection through a defense signaling pathway.
