The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical overview of the use of social marketing in Asia. A total of 17 countries were included in this paper. We demonstrate the development and trends of social marketing in Asia by highlighting prominent and effective cases. Our findings reveal that social marketing practice represents a wide spectrum of topics. However, public policy and education outweigh adoption of social marketing to address social issues. Several barriers influence adoption and effectiveness of social marketing. We highlight a few and recommend strategies to overcome them.

The current study uses risk theory to explore factors mitigating consumers’ intention to use SSTs. The findings of an empricial study reveal that the perceived time, security and addiction risk indirectly reduce consumers’ intention to use SSTs through the per-ceived psychological risk. Most importantly, this study’s findings show that an increas-ing autonomy of SSTs strengthens the effects of perceived addiction risk.

This study enrolled enterprise business owners/managers in the U.S. as the subjects to investigate the relationship among four factors: personal motivation, the social expectation of stakeholders, business performance, and their CSR toward the local community. The research results showed that: (1) small enterprise’s perceived expectation from stakeholders has a positive effect on their decision to engage in CSR toward community; (2) their perception of business performance has a positive effect on their decision to engage in CSR toward the community. Based on these research results, public policymakers or relevant units are advised to further achieve the goal of nurturing a flourishing community by increasing awareness of stakeholder’s expectations for small enterprise’s CSR commitment. Also, it is clearly pronounced in this study that regardless of their personal motivation to support the local community, unless financially successful, small businesses are less likely to engage in CSR toward the local community. This result makes a good sense that having a successful business operation is a necessary condition for small enterprises to pay attention to a higher-level value such as CSR toward the local community.

This study examined factors that influence purchase intention of ethically produced fashion products. Theory of Reasoned Action was used to understand consumer attitude formation and purchase intention of ethically produced fashion products. Two unique variables were studied (environmental awareness, environmental concern) with the consumer attitude toward the purchase intention of ethically produced products. The influence of subjective norms on purchase intention was also examined. The results showed the influence of environmental concern on both attitude and purchase intention along with the influence of attitude on purchase intention. The findings of this study contribute to the body of the existing knowledge in the area of ethical production by providing explanations and a broad understanding of the factors that influence purchase intention of ethically produced fashion products. The results will also provide insight to firms wanting to effectively convey pro-environmental efforts to consumers that will help branding, positioning, and potential sales increase.

The world is not in peace everywhere, unfortunately. There is a huge population living in fear, whose ordinary lives are affected by terror. Literature suggests living in terror leads to different relationships with the place (e.g. Billig, 2006) and to psychological distress, which further leads to changes in attitudes and beliefs (Echebarria-Echabe & Fernández-Guede, 2006), as well as behaviors (e.g. Schiff, 2006; Schiff, Benbenishty, McKay, DeVoe, Liu, & Hasin, 2006). This study looks at regions in Pakistan where people live in constant terror of terrorism, political unrest, and threats of death, and aim to understand how people cope with the extreme situations, how their attachment to the place evolves and changes, and how people’s perceptions and ideologies on consumption shift.

Across several disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences, recent work on reciprocity in social exchange raises questions about exploitativeness, sustainability and environmental concerns (Weiss, 1987; Ursell, 2000; Smit, 2011; Lewis et al., 2015; Grinstein and Riefler, 2015) with calls to research to explore the importance of consumers’ prosocial activities in relation to concepts such as ethnocentrism (Ratner and Miller, 2001; Olivola and Shafir, 2013; Small and Cryder, 2016). Clearly, while the focus of ethnocentrism is on the consumer’s own group, the focus of many calls for prosocial activities is on the “other”. Hence, a question of interest arises from this: how do these competing forces coexist? In other words, since ethnocentrism is a complex multidimensional construct, how do the different dimensions of ethnocentrism relate to prosocial consumer behaviors? Furthermore, since prosocial behaviors are considered necessary, another question of interest is; how can consumers be urged to engage in prosocial behaviors?

The goal of this study was to develop a haptic communication system that can convey the tactile sensation of fashion materials in a virtual environment. In addition, the effectiveness and how realistically the virtual fabric image of this system delivers the tactile sensation of actual fabric was verified. First, a literature review was conducted through which the tactile attributes of fashion materials were defined that would be implemented in the haptic communication system. Then, a questionnaire for evaluating the tactile attributes of fashion materials was developed. Next, a haptic communication system was designed to convey fashion image experiences in a virtual environment, from which a haptic rendering model was suggested. The effectiveness of the haptic communication system was evaluated by verifying user experiences with questions developed through a user evaluation experiment. The validity of the evaluation questions pertaining to the tactile attributes and the effects of the haptic communication system were verified. Factor analysis was conducted to verify the evaluation of the tactile sense attributes of the fashion material, which identified density, thickness, and elasticity of the material as key factors. As a result of comparisons between the tactile sense through haptic characteristics and through touching, it was observed that regarding density and thickness, tactile sense experience led to greater perceived reality, while this was not the case for elasticity.
