        Different laboratory strains of Drosophila melanogaster are reported to differ considerably in their physiology, behavior, and life-histories, due to their adaptations to different laboratory conditions. Recent advances in insect aging research have highlighted the importance of protein:carbohydrate (P:C) balance as a key dietary determinant of lifespan and other components of fitness, but it remains unexplored whether P:C balance affects the fitness-related traits of D. melanogaster in a strain-specific manner. The purpose of this study was to compare the life-history consequences of six different laboratory strains of D. melanogaster (three Canton-S substrains, w1118, yw, and Oregon-R) allocated to four synthetic diets differing in P:C ratio (1:16, 1:4, 1:1, or 4:1). Five components of fitness (lifespan, fecundity, larval viability, development time, and body mass) were recorded from flies maintained at 25oC under L:D 12:12 photoperiod. All strains exhibited qualitatively similar responses to dietary P:C balance, with the increase in P:C ratio being associated with shortened lifespan and improved egg production. In all strains, fly larvae confined to P:C 1:16 suffered high mortality, retarded growth, and reduced body size. As indicated by significant diet×strain interactions for all measured fitness components, the magnitude of such diet effect varied among different laboratory strains in D. melanogaster. Possible explanations for such strain differences are discussed.

        ICT 기반의 해충 이미지 전송 시스템은 담배거세미나방과 파밤나방을 예찰하고 방제하는데 필요한 효과적인 유인 해충 전송수단이다. 시설 온실내 담배거세미나방과 파밤나방을 유인하기 위하여 스마트 트랩을 이용하였다. 스마트트랩은 나방류 해충유인을 위해 성페로몬 4종 장착하였으며 유인된 해충은 특수 카메라를 이용하여 이미지 촬영이 가능하였다. 또한, 해충유인 발광트랩 처리구는 황색광을 사용한 발광 트랩을 사용하였다. 또한 대조구로 기존에 널리 사용되는 델타트랩은 한 종류의 성페로몬을 장착하여 유인력 검정에 이용하였다. 성페로몬 한 종류만 사용한 델타트랩 처리는 담배거세미나방 페로몬 루어를 사용하였고, 4종류의 성페로몬을 설치한 스마트 트랩 처리구는 담배거세미나방, 뒷날개흰나방, 파밤나방, 왕담배나방용 성페로몬 루어를 사용하였다. 실험은 2018년 6월 1일부터 8월 31일까지 함안 시설원예연구소의 13m2의 소형비닐하우스에서 수행하였으며 공시작물은 파프리카 ‘시로코’ 품종과 토마토 ‘데프니스’ 품종을 사용하였다. 나방류 해충의 유인력 검정결과 파프리카와 토마토를 식재한 온실 모두 성페로몬 루어 한 종류를 설치한 델타트랩보다 유인발광 트랩 처리구에서 높은 나방류 유인율을 나타내었다. 시험기간 유인발광 트랩의 경우 유인 포획된 총 나방수는 파프리카 온실에서 평균 97마리, 토마토 온실에서 75마리가 유인 포획되어 가장 높았다. 그러나, 성페로몬 1종 및 4종을 설치한 델타트랩 및 스마트트랩처리구는 두 개의 온실 모두 평균 5마리 이하의 유인율을 나타내었다. 따라서, 시설내 나방류 예찰 및 유인 방제하기 위해서는 기존 성페로몬만 사용하기 보다는 유인발광 트랩을 함께 설치하는 것이 나방류 유인포획에 효과적이라고 판단되었다.

        친환경 해충 방제 방법 중 LED를 비롯한 빛을 이용한 해충방제가 활발하게 연구되고 있으며, 해양, 농장, 축사 등 산업적인 측면뿐만 아니라 사회 전반적인 분야에서 활용되고 있다. 해충 기피램프의 광원은 주로 LED(550~630mm)가 활용되고 있으나 출력이 약해 넓은 면적에 적용이 힘든 단점이 있다. 이에 제논램프를 이용한 넓은 면적에 적용 가능한 식물재배용 해충 기피램프를 적용하여 담배거세미나방에 의한 작물 및 피해과실률을 비교하였다. 특정 파장(870~920mm, 자외선:가시광선:적외선=2:34:64)을 방출하는 제논램프를 높이 2.5m, 2/10a개 설치하였다. 광원의 처리는 3수준(일몰 후 2시간 경과 시점부터 2시간, 4시간, 무처리)으로 하였으며, 나방의 유입을 원활하게 하기 위하여 모든 출입구를 개방하였다. 과실 피해가 발생한 후 출입구를 폐쇄하여 제논램프가 유입된 나방의 작물 및 과실 가해를 억제하는지 조사하였다. 토마토 재배는 경상남도 함안(35° 15’ 0”N / 128° 25’ 0”E)의 유리온실(6*10*5m)에 토마토(데프니스, 유럽종)를 재식간격 1m(줄 간격), 0.5m(포기사이거리)재배하였다. 생육기간은 4월 12일 정식하여 8월 2일까지이다. 토마토 재배기간 동안 격주간격으로 생육(초장, 엽면적, 잎, 과실, 줄기의 생체중 및 건물중)조사를 하였으며, 매주 피해과, 정상과의 수량을 조사하였다. 조사 결과 대조구에서 엽의 건조 중량이 21%정도 낮았으며, 줄기의 건조 중량은 2.5배 높았으며, 초장, 엽면적은 차이가 없었다. 제논램프 처리 시간에 따라 피해과실률((피해과실 중량(g)/총 과실 중량(g))*100)은 제논램프 4시간 : 초기 7.59 → 2주 후 0.02a, 2시간 : 초기 3.41 → 2주 후 6.32b, 대조구 초기 10.00 → 2주 후 42.71c% (Analysis of variance, p < 0.1) 로 조사되었다. 대조구에서는 유입된 담배거세미나방이 온실 내에서 번식함에 따라 엽의 생체중은 감소하였으나 엽면적에서는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았는데, 이는 대조구의 잎이 심하게 황화된 경우가 많았고, 이 때문에 엽면적은 증가하였으나 중량감소 하였다. 제논램프 2시간, 4시간 처리에서는 담배거세 미나방에 의한 작물 및 피해과실률이 감소하였으며, 제논램프 4시간 처리에서 유의하게 높은 방제 효과를 보였다.

        Cylapine plant bug, Bothriomiris gotohi Yasunaga, 2000 and Peritropis advena Kerzhner, 1972 is reported from Korean peninsula for the first time. Morphological diagnosis for the genus is provided with dorsal habitus, female and male genital structure of Korean Cylapinae species. Also, keys to genera and to species of Korean Cylapinae provided for proper identification.

        The Japanese pine bast scale, Matsucoccus matsumurae (Kuwana, 1905), is a destructive pest of pine trees in America, East Asia and Northern Europe. The spread of damage to black pine trees, Pinus thunbergii, of M. matsumurae was reported from all southern, and some eastern and west costal regions in Korea, under the name of M. thunbergianae which was newly described by Miller & Park (1987) as a new species. Historically, M. thunbergianae was synonymized with M. matsumurae by Booth & Gullan (2006), on the basis of molecular sequence data. However, the supporting data for the synonym is unavailable in any DNA database, such as GenBank and BOLD. Moreover, M. thunbergianae have been still used to the resent scientific studies in Korea. Here, we performed morphological and molecular comparison to review the result of Booth & Gullan (2006), using M. matsumurae from Fukuoka, Japan and topotype materials of M. thunbergianae from Goheung, Korea. Our data supported the opinion of Booth & Gullan (2006) following results: The morphological features of adult female and male of M. thunbergianae are identical to those of M. matsumurae. Also, DNA sequences (COI, 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) of M. thunbergianae showed identical or very low genetic distances with those of M. matsumurae. From the regional sampling in Korea, M. matsumurae was newly found in Jeju and Seoul.

        고준위방사성폐기물 심지층 처분 대상 암종으로 고려되는 화강암에서 방사성핵종의 장기 거동특성을 이해하기 위한 연구의 일환으로 KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) 화강암에 존재하는 우라늄의 용출특성에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 반응 시작 후부터 10일 동안의 반응기간 중 다른 반응용액에 비해 CO3 2- 농도가 높은 UD-CO3 및 UD-Bg 반응용액에서 우라늄의 용출량이 다소 급격하게 증가하였다. 또한 Na 또는 Ca가 다량 함유된 반응용액에서 반응 60일 이후 우라늄 용출량이 다소 급격히 증가하였다. 각 반응용액에 의한 반응 270일까지의 우라늄의 용출량은 UD-CO3 (44.61 μg·L-1), UD-Bg (41.01 μg·L-1), UD-Na (26.87 μg·L-1), UD-Ca (20.26 μg·L-1), UD-CaSi (17.03 μg·L-1), UD-Si (10.47 μg·L-1)으로 지속적으 로 증가 하였으나, 반응 270일 이후 우라늄 용출량은 점차 감소하는 경향을 나타낸다. 이는 화강암 시료 내에 존재하는 우라늄이 반응용액과 상호반응에 의해 최대 용출될 수 있는 한계에 도달하였기 때문으로 판단된다. 우라늄 용출은 혼합된 반응 용액 내의 CO3 2- 존재와 수질의 지화학적 유형에 따라 우라늄의 용출 농도 및 용출 최대치가 나타나는 시점이 다르게 확인되 었다. 이는 시료와 반응용액의 상호반응 과정에서 용존이온의 영향에 의해 화강암시료와 반응용액 사이에 반응속도의 차이가 발생하는 것으로 판단된다.

        The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of high levels of nutrients on the growth performance, blood metabolites and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo cattle. Eighteen Hanwoo steers were fed two types of diets: 1) Nine animals were fed the conventional diet including typical levels of crude protein (CP) and total digestive nutrients (TDN), and 2) Nine animals were fed the treatment diet including high levels of CP and TDN. The average body weight (BW) and dry matter intake (DMI) were greater (P < 0.05) in the treatment group than in the conventional group at early and late fattening stages. Also, in the treatment group, the average daily gain (ADG) was greater (P < 0.05) at the late fattening stage. The serum total lipid and cholesterol levels were higher (P < 0.05) in the late fattening stage of treatment group. The carcass weight, total fat weight, longissimus muscle area and the grade of meat quality were also greater (P < 0.05) in the treatment group than the conventional diet group. This study demonstrates that high levels of CP and TDN exhibit a positive effect on the growth performance and carcass characteristics, indicating that high levels of CP and TDN can be used as a cost-effective feeding program for Hanwoo cattle by shortening the feeding period.

        Pesticide application in agriculture provides significant benefits such as protection from disease, prevention of harmful insects, and increased crop yields. However, accurate toxicological tests and risk assessments are necessary because of many related adverse effects associated with pesticide use. In this review, we discuss and analyze residual pesticides contained in livestock feed in Korea. A pesticide residue tolerance standard for livestock feed has not been precisely established; so, risk assessments are required to ensure safety. Standards and approaches for animal criteria and appropriate methods for evaluating residual pesticides are discussed and analyzed based on technology related to animal product safety in Korea. The safety of livestock feed containing pesticides is assessed to establish maximum residue limits relative to pesticides. Analysis of residual pesticides in milk, muscle, brain, and fat was performed with a livestock residue test and safety evaluation of the detected pesticide was performed. Efficacy of organic solvent extraction and clean-up of feed was verified, and suitability of the instrument was examined to establish if they are effective, rapid, and safe. This review discussed extensively how pesticide residue tolerance in livestock feed and hazard evaluation may be applied in future studies.

        Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is a useful biotechnological tool for animal cloning. Until now, SCNT has been inefficient, especially in dog. It is believed that an embryo developmental block in SCNT embryos is cause of low production efficiency. However, no studies have been performed on canines for embryo developmental block. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the beneficial role of EDTA in canine parthenogenic (PA) embryos development to overcome embryo developmental block. The PA embryos were divided into 0.01 mM EDTA treated and non-treated groups. Embryo developmental efficiency was measured by activating chemically parthenote. After EDTA induction, PA embryos were evaluated for embryonic development, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) activity, mitochondrial integrity, ATP production and genomic activation. The EDTA treated PA embryos showed significantly higher survival rate and improved cavity formation compared to non-treated. Furthermore, cytoplasmic ROS level was mitigated and mitochondrial membrane potential was found significantly higher in EDTA treated group followed by higher ATP production. Moreover, major embryonic genomic activation specific markers/factors were also elevated in EDTA treated group. Conclusively, we elucidated that EDTA showed substantially positive effect to overcome embryo developmental block in canine.

        One of the most performed action in daily life is standing up from sitting position. As the population of the world is aging at the high rates, people may face problems with reduced muscle strength as well as psychological changes. This can lead elderly people having difficulties with standing up from chair. Now, with the aging trend worldwide, products are being developed that can support the lives of the elderly. This study examines the distribution of hip pressure in relation to the seating positions of the standing assistance seats under development to prevent standing up accidents in older adults. The currently developing standing assistant chair designed to tilt to a maximum angle of 25 degrees. At over 25°, design considers that older people are at risk of thrown back out of that force and that the forces exerted on their arms and legs can be a significant burden to older people. By considering danger of higher than 25° for older people which is experimented in the basis of static capturing approach in previous papers, it is experimented people with age group of 20~60 on 0° to 25° tilting angle on the basis of dynamic capturing method in order to pick convenient angle of inclination. Moreover, tried to find the optimum angle by comparing the hip pressure distribution when seated at the edge of the seat and at the center of the seat with the pressure distribution sensor.

        This research was conducted in order to examine the effect of brand status and brand crisis types on consumers’ forgiveness intention. In this research, we proposed and found that the favorable attitude toward the underdog referred as underdog effect (Paharia, Keinan, Avery, & Schor, 2011) would be diluted especially in relational-related failure. When relationship efforts and perceived warmth of the brand are particularly critical, service failure caused by highly identified underdog brand can be perceived to be more serious (Vandello, Goldschmied, & Richards, 2007). Four of the studies consistently demonstrated our assumption in that people expressed less forgiveness intention on underdog brands when the crisis is in a service failure (vs. product failure): study1 and 2, service process failure (vs. service outcome failure): study 3, and human service process failure (vs. non-human service process failure): 4. Further, the mechanism underlying this negative effect toward the underdog was revealed as perceived anger. These findings can give insights to marketers that the types of crisis and the way of brand positioning are very critical to influence customer’s forgiveness intention.

        New product entails risk, causing resistance to adoption. The recommendation system may decrease the psychological risk by guiding decision making process to be more efficient (Häubl and Trifts, 2000). AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been getting smarter and smarter and widely applied to the recommendation system. Even while you are browsing on your Facebook, AI recommends you the products that you may like based on the customized analysis of your interest. However, do people always love to adopt the smart recommends from AI? Definitely no! Then when and why people reluctantly accept AI recommendation? We assume that the product or service where the sense and feeling is important, people might be reluctant to accept the recommendation from artificial intelligence. This is because people might feel threatened when the AI challenges against human uniqueness (Gray and Wegner, 2012). Thus, in this study we investigated how the recommendation system types (AI vs. Human) affect brand attitude depending on the brand image (Symbolic vs. Functional). We found consumers are reluctant to accept a recommendation from AI in symbolic brand where human sense and feel are considered to be critical factors (Study1). This effect was further explained by uncanny-feeling toward the AI recommendation system (Study2). This research is meaningful in that it is the first attempt to apply the artificial intelligence recommendation concept to the marketing strategy by incorporating the concept of brand image. We predicted and found AI based recommendation system is reluctantly accepted for symbolic brand. Furthermore, we discovered the underlying process for this phenomenon as uncanny feeling. People seemed to have uncomfortable feelings against AI recommendation when the brand image is related to sense and feel considered as nature of human uniqueness. Thus, marketers should be very cautious when utilizing the AI recommendation system not to threaten human uniqueness area.

        The cryopreservation has been extensively applied in many cells including spermatozoa (semen) during past several decades. Especially, the canine spermatozoa cryopreservation has contributed on generation of progeny of rare/genetically valuable dog breeds, genome resource banking and transportation of male germplasm at a distant place. However, severe and irreversible damages to the spermatozoa during cryopreservation procedures such as the thermal shock (cold shock), formation of intracellular ice crystals, osmotic shock, stress of cryoprotectants and generator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been addressed. According as a number of researches have been conducted to overcome these problems and to advance cryopreservation technique, several analytical methods have been employed to evaluate the quality of the fresh or cryopreserved canine spermatozoa in regards to the motility, morphology, integrity of membrane and DNA, mitochondrial activity, ROS generation, binding affinity to oocytes, in vitro fertilization potential and fertility potential by artificial insemination. Because the study designs with certain application of analytical methods are selective and varied depending on each experimental objective and laboratory condition, it is necessary to establish the normal reference data of the fresh or cryopreserved canine spermatozoa for each analytical method to monitor experimental procedure, to translate raw data and to discuss results. Here, we reviewed the recent articles to introduce various analytical methods for the canine spermatozoa as well as to establish the normal reference data for each analytical method in the fresh or cryopreserved canine spermatozoa, based on the results of the previous articles. We hope that this review contributes to the advancement of cryobiology in canine spermatozoa.
