Nongwoo Bio has established a company capable of producing vegetable breeding and production in Indonesia. Since 2000, we have conducted a survey on viruses in vegetable crops such as pepper and tomatoes in Indonesia about 7 times. Since there is a possibility that the virus in Southeast Asia may occur in Korea, TSWV resistant substance is secured in pepper to cultivate resistant varieties and cultivate tomato resistant varieties. As a result, we have introduced TSWV resistant varieties of pepper for the first time in Korea, and TYLCV varieties of tomatoes have also been introduced. Through this project, virus analysis on Southeast Asian countries will be conducted and seed companies will be able to fully utilize basic data for cultivating resistant varieties. We will continue to investigate the viruses of vegetable crops in Indonesia and contribute to cultivating resistant varieties.
This study was carried out to find a new corn cultivar with multiple tillers that is suitable for forage. Materials were developed at the Corn Breeding Laboratory of Chungnam National University. A total of 3,650 accessions were collected domestically and from other countries, including China. Among them, 16 CNU inbreds, tillering and non-tillering, were compared to each other in terms of stem heigh, number of tillers, fresh weight, and dry weight per plant. Of these surveyed traits, the stem heigh at tasseling stage was 140~190 cm and number of tillers per plant ranged from two to four. Fresh weight and dry weight of these lines were higher in the tillered than in the non-tillered sample.
This study was carried out to compare botanical and amylogram characteristics including table quality in waxy corn kernel. The used materials in this experiment were producted and evulated at Corn Breeding Laboratory, Coll. of Agri. & Life Sci., in CNU. In botanical characteristics CNU H09-26 among used hybrids was highest in stem height as 228.5 cm, but that of CNU H09-30 was lowest. Ear height was highest in CNU H09-23 as 78.2 cm, but that of CNU H09-30 was lowest. Ear length among hybrids were also variable as 21.2 cm to 10.8 cm. in amylogram analysis CNU H09-23 hybrid was lowest in pasting temperature, while break down of this hybrid was highest These results appeared highly in table quality. Accordingly we thought that this hybrid will be adapted as a leading variety for edible waxy corn.
This study was carried out to find relationships of genetic distance and heterosis expression degree in the developed CNU waxy corn lines. The used material were developed in Corn Breeding Laboratory, Coll. of Agri. & Life Sci., CNU. Total 10 primers used for SSR maker analysis. In genetic distance, the used lines divided into four groups; A group has two lines, B group has one line, C group has ten lines and D group has eleven lines, respectively. Among used lines, CNU427 and CNU588 were very closed as a 74, while CNU451 and CNU429 were remote as a 40 inbred coefficient, respectively. While heterosis degree were very variable not only hybrids but also cross parents. Average heterosis of most cross-parent was high in plant height, ear height, flowering day and ear length. Especially, CNU H09-23 hybrid was high as 79.4% than other hybrids. Here, we gained the fact has closely relationship between genetic distance and heterosis.
This study was carried out to investigate the flora of indigenous habitat of Simjeok forest wetland, Mt. Jeombomg forest wetland, Mt. Sohwangbyung forest wetland, Jilmoi-neup, and Mt. Myeon forest wetland in Gangwon Province. The vascular plants were summarized as 547 taxa; 92 families, 296 genera, 468 species, 4 subspecies, 67 varieties, 8 forms. The plants that are specially noteworthy are 17 taxa of Korean endemic plants, 3 taxa of Critical Endangered Species (CR), 4 taxa of Endangered Species (EN), 8 taxa of Vulnerable Species (VU) and 17 taxa of Least Concemed Species (LC) in rare plants as categorized by the Korean Forest Service. Furthermore, V, IV, III degrees of floristic regional indicator plants as categorized by the Korean Ministry of Environment included 9 taxa, 14 taxa and 34 taxa, respectively. In addition, 25 taxa of naturalized plants were observed. In this study, we identified a variety of plants observed in the wetlands of Gangwon Province. We believe that this study will provide useful data for future research on the conservation and management of wetlands.
This study was carried out to determine the amount of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose in six kenaf cultivars during different harvesting stages. Three mutant cultivars (Jangdae, Jeokbong and Baekma), two original cultivars (Jinju, C14), and one Chinese cultivar (Auxu) were planted on May 14, 2013. Four harvesting times were made at intervals of 20 days from 15 July to 16 September, 2013. The overall growth characters of mutant cultivar ‘Jeokbong’ such as plant height, stem diameter, flowering time, and dry mass were similar with those of the original variety. The mutant cultivar ‘Baekma’ occurred 10-day late flowering in comparison with the original variety and also displayed higher dry mass than the original variety. Jinju, Auxu and Jangdae, mid-late maturing kenaf cultivars, had high dry weight compared to early maturing cultivars such as Jeokbong, Baekma and C14. In all cultivars, the lignin contents were increased by a late harvest. The Mid-late maturing kenaf cultivars showed high lignin content in comparison with those of the early maturity cultivars. There were no significant differences of cellulose, and hemicellulose content between the cultivars, however cellulose content in stems of these kenaf cultivars were significantly decreased by a late harvest. These results may provide valuable information to assist the parental selection of kenaf breeding.
A total of CNU 28 colored hybrids developed at the Chungnam National University were evaluated to identify new cultivars with functionality. These color waxy corn hybrids appeared to have high antioxidant activity. The SOD activity in the developed color waxy corn was high; CNU13H-3, in white hybrid, and CNU13H-44, in yellow hybrid, was 5% and 27% higher than the Yeonnong and Daehakchal Gold 1 of control hybrids, respectively. The DPPH activity in CNU13H-44, of yellow hybrid, and CNU13H-75 of purple hybrid were high as 32.6 mg/g and 40.1 mg/g, respectively. We have already reported that color hybrids have high antioxidant activity. In this study also was same results. On the basis of our findings, these hybrids will be planted in next time to compare their productivity and area adaptation.
For waxy corn hybrid development, 23 waxy corn hybrids were planted and surveyed in both pericarp thickness and sugar content. Pericarp thickness showed average 50 to 49 μm in field and greenhouse. Results like these advanced than previous other hybrids. Also, sugar content in developed waxy corn evaluated as 13.6 to 15.3 brix. Here, we concluded that edible quality of waxy corn depended on combing of two factors. Especially, CNU11H8 hybrid at field and CNU11H-38 at greenhouse were good in both factors. Accordingly, these hybrids will be planted in next time for productivity and area adaptation.
A total of CNU 28 hybrids were developed at the CNU Corn Breeding Lab. were evaluated to identify new cultivars in botanical characteristics, fresh yield per 10a and taste qualities. Most of these hybrids were stable in environmental stresses such as lodging, disease and insects. Stem height ranged from 115.0 to 239.3 cm, and ear height ranged from 30.7 to 107.0 cm. The ear height to stem height ratio was showed low than 50% of standard as a stable plant type to lodging. The range of ear length was 14.2 cm to 23.0 cm. Especially, CNU 13H-73 was very longest ear as a 23 cm. The fresh yield per 10a was high in purple of CNU13H-79 hybrid than control hybrid Miheuckchal, and CNU13H-73 in white hybrid was similar Yeonnong check hybrid. The 100-kernel weights in CNU13H-3 and CNU13H-9 hybrids were higher than that of the control hybrid. CNU13H-98 among hybrids had a 100-kernel weight of 20.32 g, which was heavier than that of the control hybrid Daehackchal Gold 1. The average pericarp thickness was 41.4 μm, CNU13H-46 among hybrids had a very thin pericarp as a 35.5 μm. The mean sugar content of the used hybrids was 14.95 brix%; CNU13H-73 and CNU13H-55 had higher than Mibak2 as a control hybrid.
We investigated outer appearance of brown rice(BR) and its anthocyanin content of Josangheugchal a colored rice variety as affected by different transplanting date(from May 15 to June 24, 10 day interval, 5 times). Thickness of BR was mainly 1.6~2.0mm which occupied 96.7% ~ 99.5% under different transplanting date. As transplanting time was late, mode of thickness of BR was clearly decreased : 2.0mm on May 15 and May 25, 1.9mm on June 4 and June 14, and 1.8mm on June 24. There was statistically significant difference in length, width and 1000 grain weight of BR according to both transplanting date and thickness of BR. There was highly significant positive corelation between thickness and length of BR and between thickness and 1000 grain weight of BR. Anthocyanin content linearly increased from 119.7mg/100g on May 15 to 384.4mg/100g on June 24 as transplanting time was late, and was highest in 1.8~1.9mm thickness of BR. Coefficient of variation for anthocyanin content by thickness of BR was lowest on June 24. According to the facts stated above it is recommendable to transplant Josangheugchal in late June to produce highly marketable colored rice.
Major characteristics of new Waesungri maize inbred line has multi-tiller and ears: five to six tillers and seven to eight ears per plant and flowering date of Waesungri was delayed about 18 and 24 days compared to Mo17 U.S line and IK4 Korean local lines, respectively. Number of ears, fresh and dry weight per plant were significantly different among all tested hybrids including Waesungri/Sinkihong hybrid under different planting times and densities. Especially, both fresh and dry weight of IK1/FR140//Waesungri F1hybrid were significantly higher at high planting density. In kernel weight per unit area, Wnesungri/Sinkihong hybrid was high at high density and IK1/FR140//Waesungri hybrid was high at low planting density. As results of analysis of variance, flowering date was shown a significantly different both planting times and varieties, while other characters including stem height were shown very variable in interactions with enviromental factors.
