        Hydroxyapatite (HA), which is an important calcium phosphate mineral, has been applied in orthopedics, dentistry, and many other fields depending upon its morphology. HA can be synthesized with different morphologies through controlling the synthesis method and several parameters. Here, we synthesize various morphologies of HA using two simple methods: hydrothermal combustion and solution combustion. The phase purity of the synthesized HA is confirmed using X-ray diffractometry. It demonstrates that pure phased hydroxyapatite can be synthesized using both methods. The morphology of the synthesized powder is examined using scanning electron microscopy. The effects of pH and temperature on the final powder are also investigated. At 140 oC, using the hydrothermal method, nano-micro HA rods with a hexagonal crystal structure can be synthesized, whereas using solution combustion method at 600 oC, a dense cubic morphology can be synthesized, which exhibits monoclinic crystal structures.

        In this work, we report in-situ observations of changes in catalyst morphology, and of growth termination of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), by complete loss of the catalyst particle attached to it. The observations strongly support the growth-termination mechanism of CNT forests or carpets by dynamic morphological evolution of catalyst particles induced by Ostwald ripening, and sub-surface diffusion. We show that in the tip-growth mode, as well as in the base-growth mode, the growth termination of CNT by dissolution of catalyst particles is plausible. This may allow the growth termination mechanism by evolution of catalyst morphology to be applicable to not only CNT forest growth, but also to other growth methods (for example, floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition), which do not use any supporting layer or substrate beneath a catalyst layer.

        Methanol as a carbon source in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene has an advantage over methane and hydrogen in that we can avoid optimizing an etching reagent condition. Since methanol itself can easily decompose into hydrocarbon and water (an etching reagent) at high temperatures [1], the pressure and the temperature of methanol are the only parameters we have to handle. In this study, synthetic conditions for highly crystalline and large area graphene have been optimized by adjusting pressure and temperature; the effect of each parameter was analyzed systematically by Raman, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, atomic force microscope, four-point-probe measurement, and UV-Vis. Defect density of graphene, represented by D/G ratio in Raman, decreased with increasing temperature and decreasing pressure; it negatively affected electrical conductivity. From our process and various analyses, methanol CVD growth for graphene has been found to be a safe, cheap, easy, and simple method to produce high quality, large area, and continuous graphene films.

        Interferon induced transmembrane protein-1 (Ifitm-1) has been reported to have an important role in primordial germ cell formation, and it has expressed in female reproductive organ. In the present study, Ifitm-1 gene expression was identified in testes and all part of epididymis using western immunoblot and immunohistochemistry. Interestingly, Ifitm-1 expression was observed on the head of spermatozoa. To investigate the role of Ifitm-1 gene expression in behavior of spermatozoa after acrosome reaction, fresh sperm was incubated with calcium ionophore to induce acrosome reaction, whereas the expression of Ifitm-1 was not altered after the acrosome reaction. Then to identify the effect of Ifitm-1 in sperm motility and other seminal parameters, different concentration of Ifitm-1 antibody was incubated with spermatozoa, and seminal parameters were assessed using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). Interestingly, motility, progressive, and VAP were increased in the sperm with Ifitm-1 antibody treated compared to rabbit serum, however other parameters such as straightness were not changed. In order to identify the functional significance of Ifitm-1 in fertilization, capacitated spermatozoa were pre-incubated with anti- Ifitm-1 antibody and subsequently examined the ability to adhere to mouse oocytes. However, any defection or alteration in sperm-egg fusion was not found, Ifitm-1 antibody treated or non-treated spermatozoa showed a normal penetration. Although the precise role of Ifitm-1 in sperm motility and following fertilization need to be elucidated, this study suggests that the activation of Ifitm-1 on the sperm may enhance the motility of spermatozoa in mice.

        Chicken Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (cIGF-1), one of the most important hormone for regulating physiological function includes body growth, muscle volume, bone density, chicken cell development and metabolism. In order to find in vitro Knokdown expression of cIGF-1, this study introduced tetracycline inducible RNA interference expression system (TetRNAi system). Tet system can inductively control high expression of extrinsic genes and expression of intrinsic genes. So it has advantages such as minimized physiological side-effects any cell and low cytotoxicity. RNAi system is proving to be a powerful experimental tool for inhibition of gene expression and post-transcriptional mechanism of gene silencing. RNAi is mediated by small interfering RNA (siRNA) consisting of 19- to 23- nucleotide double-stranded RNA duplexes that promote specific endonucleolytic cleavage of mRNA targets through an RNA-induced silencing. Then, this study RNAi-based gene knockdown can be achieved by retroviral-based expression systems. Stable integration of our inducible siRNA vector allowed the production of siRNA on doxycycline induction, followed by specific down regulation of chicken IGF-1 gene. Analyses of Real-time PCR to determine expression of the cIGF-1 gene showed successful from chicken embronic fibroblast (CEF) cells with the reduced rate of an approximately 92%. Our results demonstrate the successful regulation of cIGF-1 knockdown expression in CEF cells and support the application of an tetracycline inducible RNAi expression system in transgenic Mini chicken production.         The leaf beetle, Chrysolina aurichalcea (Coleoptera: Chysomelidae), is a pest damaging plants of Compositae. In order to understand the genetic diversity and geographic variation we sequenced a portion of mitochondrial COI gene (658 bp) and complete nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the species collected from seven Korean localities. A total of 17 haplotypes (CACOI01 ~ CACOI17), with the maximum sequence divergence of 3.04% (20 bp) were obtained from COI gene sequence, whereas 16 sequence types (ITS2CA01 ~ ITS2CA16), with the maximum sequence divergence of 2.013% (9 bp) were obtained from ITS2, indicating substantially larger sequence divergence in COI gene sequence. Phylogenetically, the COI gene provided two haplotype groups with a high nodal support (≥ 87%), whereas ITS2 provided one sequence type group with a high nodal support (≥ 92%). The result of COI gene may suggest the presence of historical biogeographic barriers that bolster genetic subdivision in the species. Different grouping pattern between COI gene and ITS2 sequences were interpreted in terms of recent dispersal, reflected in the ITS2 sequence. Finally, finding of unique haplotypes and sequence types only from Beakryeng-Islet population was interpreted as an intact remnant of ancient polymorphism. As more samples are analyzed using further hyper-variable marker, further fruitful inference on the geographic contour of the species might be available.

        분리막을 이용한 수처리 공정에서 유입 수에 함유된 부유물질이나 기타 오염물질이 막 표면 또는 내부에 축적 흡착 등의 막 오염현상으로 인해 막 성능 감소와 함께 막 분리 공정에 큰 영향을 미치게 된다. 본 연구에서는 막 표면에서의 막 오염현상을 실시간으로 모니터링 할 수 있는 기술을 연구하였다. 투명한 오염물질에 의한 분리막 표면 오염을 측정하기 위해 막 표면에 360 nm 파장의 가시광선을 조사하여 이미지를 R. G. B 값으로 추출하여 막의 오염현상을 실시간으로 모니터링 하였다. 추출된 이미지 중 400~499 nm 파장영역인 B 값이 가장 강도가 강하게 나타났다. 막 오염정도의 변화를 이미지의 강도 차이로 관찰함으로써 실시간 분석이 가능함을 확인하였다.

        수처리 분리막 공정에서 막 오염 제어 기술은 현장 적용 기술 및 경제성 확보에 있어 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 형광 나노 입자 및 형광 분광 분석법을 도입함으로써 수처리 분리막 공정에서 막 오염 정도를 실시간으로 측정 모니터링 할 수 있는 센싱 기술을 개발하고자 하였다. 막 오염 정도를 모니터링 할 수 있는 분리막 제조를 위해 세 종류의 형광물질 OB, FP, KCB를 담지한 다공성 polysulfone (PSf) 비대칭 막을 제조하였다. 형광 분광 분석 시스템을 이용하여 분리막 표면에서의 오염 정도를 실시간으로 측정한 결과, 형광 물질을 첨가한 막은 막 오염이 진행됨에 따라 형광 신호가 크게 감소함을 보여 막 표면 오염층의 모니터링 분석이 가능함을 확인하였다.

Such difference may reflect a diverse dynamics of the species such as biogeographic history, mating behaviors, and also possibly different mode of inheritance of the two molecules, but requires further scrutinized examination of the dataset. In terms of population genetic perspective, overall no population subdivision was detected from both molecules, except for locality 7 (Eocheong islet) from mitochondrial DNA. As more scrutinized analysis is performed, further fruitful inference on the geographic contour of the species might be available.

        The seven-spotted lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), known also as the seven-spot ladybird, is natural enemy for aphids and has a broad ecological range, living almost anywhere there are aphids for it to eat. In order to understand the genetic diversity and geographic variation of the species we sequenced a portion of mitochondrial COI gene (658 bp) and complete nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) collected from nine Korean localities. A total of 21 haplotypes (CSCOI01 ~ CSCOI21), with the maximum sequence divergence of 4.56% (30 bp) were obtained from COI gene sequence (from 78 individuals), whereas 65 sequence types (CSITS201 ~ CSITS265), with the maximum sequence divergence of 2.06% (11 positions) were obtained from ITS2 (from 79 individuals), indicating substantially larger sequence divergence in mitochondrial gene sequence. Both COI gene and ITS2 shows the distribution pattern that only a few haplotypes or sequence types are widely distributed, whereas majority of them are highly restricted in one geographic location, even represented as a single individual. Unlikely the ITS2 sequence types the mitochondrial COI haplotypes evidenced the presence of two main phylogenetic groups, reciprocally monophyletic to each other. Geographically, these two groups are spread in all localities surveyed. Considering both COI gene and ITS2 sequence together, current our data may suggest the presence of ancestral polymorphism, rather than on-going speciation, but more scrutinized analysis will be performed soon. Due partially by the presence of both COI groups in all surveyed localities, the genetic diversity estimates of all localities are similar from the perspective of COI gene, but ITS data showed extremely lower genetic diversity of one islet locality, Anmyeon-do (locality 2; 0.002530 vs. 0.008054 ~ 0.012060). Analysis of gene flew estimates between localities indicates that most populations are highly interconnected to each other. However, one islet locality, Anmyeon-do (locality) has shown statistically significant distance from the remaining localities on the basis of only ITS2 data (FST = 0.19 ~ 0.34), requiring scrutinized phylogeographic inference on this population with expanded sampling. As more scrutinized analysis is performed, further fruitful inference on the geographic contour of the species might be available.

        In an effort to gain a better understanding of the nature of the population genetic structure of the pest insect, Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), tobacco cutworms were collected from six Korean and five Chinese localities and their mitochondrial A+T-rich region and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) regions were cloned and sequenced. A total of 106 A+T-rich region haplotypes and 92 ITS2 sequence types were obtained from 158 individuals. Compared to the preliminary mitochondrial COI gene sequence data that provided all identical sequence types in all samples, the A+T-rich region and nuclear ITS2 are highly variable. Overall, a low level of genetic fixation in the A+T-rich region (FST = 0 ~ 0.02965) and nuclear ITS2 (FST = 0 ~ 0.34491), and no discernable isolated population was noted to exist among most S. litura populations. The presence of a majority of within-population variations, rather than variations among populations or between China and Korea, indicates that the S. litura populations are composed of heterogeneous individuals. The fixation index at hierarchical level of among regions shows no significance, suggesting that the S. litura populations in both Korea and China are profoundly interrelated with one another. This finding is in accord with the current knowledge that S. litura has sufficient flight capacity for dispersal.

        Ecological changes, both man-made and natural, have changed the landscape of the Republic of Korea following the end of Japanese occupation at the end of World War II (1939-1945). During the Japanese occupation, forested hillsides were cleared and wood products shipped to Japan, leaving the hills and mountains largely covered by grasses and other shrub vegetation. Following WWII, the country of Korea was divided into North and South Koreas, with North Korea under communist powers, while South Korea was established as a democratic government. In South Korea poverty was rampant and local populations scavenged for wood for cooking and heating during the cold winters. Just as economic conditions were increasing, South Korea was attached by North Korea, beginning a long drawn-out conflict from 1950 to the summer of 1953, whereby an armistice was signed and an often uneasy peace between the two countries continues today. Again, the Republic of Korea emerged from a War as an impoverished country with treeless country sides, hills, and mountains. In the 1960’s, president Chung-Hee Park established a tree planting policy to reestablish long-ago lavish forested mountains and hillsides that make up more than 70% of the South Korean landscape. Today, mountains and hillsides are generally not used for agriculture and are completely forested, with planted groves and volunteer trees ranging in age from 10-50 years. These forested areas have led to increased protection for large and small mammals and birds, increasing the potential for zoonotic pathogens that there ectoparasites harbor to be transmitted to man during work and leisure activities. While forested areas provided an expanded habitat for some animals, agriculture expanded and modernized, resulting in short-cut grasses on banks separating much of the rice paddies, orchards, ditches, and dry-land farming that increased competition for small mammal habitat. As a result of increased surveillance of small and large animals and their ectoparasites, the increased prevalence of known pathogens and identification of new pathogens, especially those harbored by ticks, has demonstrated the presence of tick-borne encephalitis, several species of spotted fever group Rickettsia, and a host of other zoonotic diseases in wild animals, their ectoparasites, and man. As tick-borne diseases are not reportable diseases in Korea, the extent and impact on civilian and military populations is unknown as diagnoses are often likely sought for the wrong pathogen. While agriculture modernized, military training sites largely consist of unmanaged lands with tall grasses that are conducive to large and small mammal populations, which are host to a number of zoonotic diseases, e.g., hantaviruses, scrub typhus, murine typhus, leptospirosis, tick-borne encephalitis, spotted fever group rickettsial pathogens, Lyme disease, bartonellosis, etc. that impact on military populations training in those areas. The impact of training sites habitat modification has not been assessed, but for many sites is impractical. To reduce health risks of vectorborne diseases, the US Army has established better housing (tents to barracks with screened windows and air conditioning) at some field training sites, reducing the potential for the transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens (malaria and Japanese encephalitis virus). The increased use of permethrin-treated all climate uniforms (ACUs) and repellents, also reduce the potential for transmission of mosquito-, tick-, mite-, and flea-borne pathogens. However, training conditions at some field training sites remain largely unchanged, with personnel working and sleeping in tents that abut to forested areas where animals and their ectoparasites are present. While some training and maneuver sites are well planned for weapons qualifications of wheeled and tracked vehicles, others sites are in areas of unmanaged lands which are rodent infested. Increased surveillance by the 65th Medical Brigade not only provides a baseline and relative distribution for vector-borne diseases in Korea, but also provides disease trends and risk assessments that are necessary for protecting US military personnel training in Korea.

        The experimental work was conducted to investigate the effects of the application level of composted cattle manure (CCM) on forage productivity using whole crop barely (WCB)-whole crop rice (WCR) double cropping system for 3 years. Main plot was consisted of application level of CCM such as 150%, 200% and control plot. The total DMY of forages under WCB and WCR in treatment of CF significantly decreased as compared with that of treatment of CCM 150%. However, NDF, ADF and CP content of WCB and WCR were hardly influenced by CCM application.
