The present study investigated pine trees, which forms a major plantation species in Korea, with the objective of improving the survival rate of pine trees after planting. Growth responses and characteristics were assessed by controlling the level of fertilizer application, which is a basic controlling the growth of pine seedlings, to identify the optimal fertilization treatment. Pine tree seedlings were grown in 104 containers and were examined 8 weeks after planting. Stem height and were measured at 4-week intervals. In terms of fertilization treatment for 1-0 pine seedlings, the treatment group with gradually-increasing fertilizer concentration (500→1000→1000 →1000mg·L-1) had the biggest increase in stem height and diameter at the root. The survey results indicated that the increased concentration treatment group and the gradually-increasing concentration treatment group had more growth compared with that in the fixed concentration treatment group. The gradually-increasing concentration treatment group (500→1000→1000→1000mg·L-1) had the highest total dry matter production. Nine weeks after fertilization, the tips of the pine leaves turned yellow in the fixed concentration treatment group (3000mg·L-1). The same phenomenon was observed in the treatment group in which the concentration was increased to 2000mg·L-1, and in the gradually- increasing concentration treatment group, when the concentration was raised up to 2000mg·L-1. We concluded that the optimal fertilization conditions for producing healthy pine 1-0 seedlings involve fertilizing once a week with Multifeed 19 at 500mg·L-1 during the seedling period, Multifeed 19 at 1000mg·L-1 during the rapid growth period, and Multifeed 32 at 1000mg·L-1 during the maturation period.

This study was carried out to analyze cone and seed developmental characteristics of the Pinus densiflora community distributed in the entire area of Mt. Gwanggyo in Suwon. As survey areas, the P. densiflora communities of two regions, which are 400 meters and 550 meters in altitudes above the sea level, were selected, and cone collection was conducted 10 times in total from April 12 to October 11, 2012. The result of cone and seed development survey showed that the size and growth rate of cone and seed was larger and faster in individuals of the community situated at an altitude of 400 meters than those at an altitude of 500 meters. The water content of the cone collected from at an altitude of 400 meters on October 11 was 35.9%, which is 38.3% lower than that of the cone at an altitude of 500m, but more rapid decrease in water was found. The number of cone opening days was 7.3 days in the community at an altitude of 400 meters, and 8.1 days at an altitude of 500 meters, showing that of the cone at an altitude of 400 meters is shorter. The seed separation from the cone showed the same pattern as in the reduction rate from the water content of the inner cone. The number of seeds in the cone and percentage of sound seeds was also greater and higher in th cone at an altitude of 400 meters than that at an altitude of 500 meters. Meanwhile, the maturation of the embryo, a part of seed of the cone between the two communities was observed to be similar to each other. The external size of the seed has hardly changed since July 10th, but the embryo inside the seed was found to be mature until August 7th.
This study was performed in order to grasp the developmental characteristics in cone and seed of Pinus densiflora stands, which is distributed on a slope in the south and the north of Mt. Acha. Comparing the size in cone after September that the maturity in cone is completed with the average size in 2006 and 2007, the southfacing slope was 32.6 mm in length and 17.8 mm in width. The north-facing slope was 31.2 mm in length and 18.5 mm in width. Thus, difference wasn't big. However, the period of reaching the average size(29.8mm) of north-facing slope in 2007 was June 26 in the south-facing slope, and September 19 in north-facing slope. Thus, south-facing slope was surveyed to be faster by over 2 and half months. The water content after September was higher in cone of the north-facing slope. Even the period of being required that the ovuliferous scale in cone is opened was surveyed to be longer in the north-facing slope. In the meantime, comparing the average size in seed after September with length, the south-facing slope was 4.06 mm. The north-facing slope was 4.08 mm. Thus, it was surveyed to be mutually similar. In case of the south-facing slope, the period of reaching this average size (4.06 mm) was July 3. On the other hand, the north-facing slope was surveyed to be August 6. Thus, the south-facing slope could be known to reach this size faster by about 1 month. As for the seed number per cone, the north-facing slope was a little larger with 16.9 compared to the south-facing slope with 14.8. Even the rate of filled seed was indicated to be 56.2% and 60.0%, respectively, for the south-facing slope and the north-facing slope. Thus, the north-facing slope was shown to be higher. As for the germination percent in the filled seed, the south-facing slope was 88.6%, thereby having been surveyed to be higher than the north-facing slope with 80.8%.

Background : Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus, functional wild vegetable, is perennial herb and young leaves with soft texture are generally used as edible food. So the demand for the vegetable has increased recently. This study was carried out to determine the effects of temperature and shading on germination characteristics of A. dioicus.
Methods and Results : The experiment was performed by temperature and shading treatments. Seed pre-treatment before the germination experiment was carried out by the storage in low temperature (4℃) under wet condition (LTW) for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days and shading treatment were 35%, 50%, and 75% under control, BA (6-benzyladenine) and GA3 (gibberellic acid) condition for 24 hours. Increasing the length of the storage periods led to increases seed germination percent in low temperature (4℃) under wet condition (LTW), germination rate of A. dioicus seed was the highest at 15℃ with 60 days of seed pre-treatment. In the case of seeds pre-treatment with LTW, the more temperature went up, the more days to 50% of Germination of Final Germination Rate (T50) went down. As a result of surveying shading treatment, germination rate was the highest in control of 35% shading and the next higher was in control of 50% shading.
Conclusions : It is concluded that the temperature and shading are important factors to produce A. dioicus. Also, We suggest these results as basic data of A. dioicus for sexual propagation.
This study was carried out to determine the effects of light controls and leaf mold on root growth and physiological responses of Atractylodes japonica growing in forest farming. The experiment was performed by light controls (100%, 62.5%, 40.3% and 19.7% of full sunlight) and application of leaf mold to soil. Height, stem diameter, number of flower buds and root collar diameter were the highest in leaf mold within 62.5% of full sunlight (relative light intensity 62.5%). And these were the higher in leaf mold within each light level. As the shading level increased, light saturation point and maximum photosynthesis rate decreased. As the light level decreased, SPAD value increased in control and leaf mold. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. japonica was judged worse root growth under the lower light level. It was concluded that the light level was one of the most important factors to produce A. japonica. Also, producing high-quality of A. japonica with the price competitiveness by using leaf mold like the experiment can be an effective way to increase incomes for farmers.
Recent years, there is increasing demand for seedlings of Daphniphyllum macropodum. However, the bare-root nursery of the species has been reported to be challenging due to meteorological disasters caused by climate change. The study aims to investigate the appropriate levels of shade and fertilization of container-grown D. macropodum, which has shade tolerance in seedling stage. The shading treatment was regulated with the shading level of full sun, and 35%, 55%, 75% of full sun. The fertilizing level was made by regulating Multifeed 19 (N:P:K =19:19:19, v/v) with 1000mg·L-¹, 2000mg·L-¹, 3000mg·L-¹, together with the control. The height was indicated to be the highest in 3000mg·L-¹ under 55% of shading. The root collar diameter was surveyed to be the highest in 1000mg·L-¹ and 3000mg·L-¹ of full sun. A case of the whole dry mass production was surveyed to be the highest in 3000mg·L-¹ under 55% of shading and 2000mg·L-¹ under 35% of shading. Moreover, the study is to explore the possibility of production and sound growth of D. macropodum seedlings by container nursery; consequently, the result is expected to provide the production method of the seedlings of D. macropodum that is to overcome meteorological disasters from bare-root nursery.
