Data on the crude protein requirements of elk doe are nonexistent and the data are essential for their management in Korea. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the crude protein requirement for maintenance of elk doe. Three female elk deer were used in 3 × 3 Latin square design with three diets containing three levels of crude protein (CP) that contained low crude protein (approximately 12%), medium crude protein (15%), and high crude protein (18%). Each three elk doe trials included a 14-day preliminary period and a 5-day collection period. Crude protein intake was 4.83, 6.26, and 9.00 g/d for 12%, 15%, and 18% of CP level, respectively. Crude protein balances were 1.04, 1.41, and 4.14 for 12%, 15%, and 18% of CP level, respectively. The maintenance requirement for CP from the regression equation between CP intake and CP balance were 3.70 g/BW0.75.
Methyl bromide (MB) has been still routinely used in quarantine fumigation on imported citrus, although there had been issuing chronic inhalation toxicity to fumigators and related workers as well as phytotoxic damages after fumigation. Ethyl formate (EF), is the only option to replace MB in terms of its safety for consumers (food additive and naturally occurred) and worker with higher threshold level limit (TLV = 100 ppm). Its application technology also provide cost effectiveness, good commercial practice in terms of application time (< 10 min) for 40 ft container. The replacement of MB with EF is recommended not to fumigate with hazardous and phasing-out MB on imported oranges.
In the aerospace field, Carbon/Cork composites have been used for rocket propulsion systems as a light weight structural component with a high bending stiffness and high thermal insulation properties. For the fabrication of a carbon composite with a heat insulation cork part, the bonding properties between them are very important to determine the service life of the Carbon/Cork composite structure. In this study, the changes in the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of Carbon/Cork composites under accelerated aging conditions were investigated. The accelerated aging experiments were performed with different temperatures and humidity conditions. The properties of the aged Carbon/Cork composites were evaluated mainly with the interfacial strength. Finally, the lifetime prediction of the Carbon/Cork composites was performed with the long-term property data under accelerated conditions.
Recently, there is an increasing the pavement distresses such as rutting with an increase in heavy vehicles on the road in Mongolia. Rutting is the longitudinal depression in the wheel path in asphalt pavements and it causes a hydroplaning and severe safety concern for users. This study aims to develop paving material that can prevent rutting on the road pavement by improving the durability of the asphalt mixture in Mongolia. Therefore, this study was carried out using the technique of reinforcing the material by adding fibers to conventional asphalt mixture. Fibers have been used to reinforce various materials for many decades in various parts of the world. It is generally understood that asphalt is strong in compression and weak in tension. Adding fibers with high tensile strength can help increase the strength of a mixture[1]. A mixture of glass fibers was used in this study to evaluate the performance characteristics. In coordination with the City of Ulaanbaatar, The test section selected in this study was Peace Avenue in Ulaanbaatar. The test section was a bus lane with severe rutting by heavy vehicles. The designated road test section performed cutting and overlay using five asphalt mixtures: Glass Fiber-reinforced Asphalt, Hot Mix Asphalt(10mm, 19mm), Polymer Modify Asphalt(2 types). The performance survey was conducted after the summer. As a result, No noticeable cracks were observed in glass-reinforced mixture section and the rut-depth of the glass-reinforced mixture is lower than other mixtures[2].
Recently, Cambodia has been investing a lot of money in the construction and maintenance of roads, which are social infrastructures. However, damage to the existing pavement is accelerating due to the old age of the road pavement, poor drainage facilities and increase in heavy traffic. To solve this problem, a fundamental solution such as a high-performance asphalt mixture is required to extend the life of road pavement. In this study, a high performance glass fiber reinforced asphalt mixture developed in Korea was applied to Cambodia. Prior to field application, Marshall stability tests were performed on glass fiber reinforced asphalt mixtures, SBS modified asphalt mixtures and asphalt mixtures commonly used in Cambodia. The Marshall stability test showed that the glass fiber reinforced asphalt mixture and the SBS modified asphalt mixture had the same strength (about 1.3 times higher strength than the usual asphalt mixture). In addition, the test construction was carried out on the National Highway 2 of Cambodia for the evaluation of the performance of the three mixtures. In the future, the long-term performance evaluation of each mixture will be conducted through follow-up survey of the test construction area.
In Sri Lanka, the shoulder in asphalt pavements has been constructed using the materials transported from borrow pit in the iRoad Project due to the low quality of in-situ soils. After excavating 150~200mm thick and 500mm wide shoulder area, the borrow pit materials are placed and compacted according to specifications. The excavated in-situ soils are dumped in designated location. It is estimated that this process of shoulder construction is not economical due to high material transportation cost and can also induce the environmental issues by disposal of in-situ soils. It can also cause distresses such as surface rutting and edge drop-off in soft shoulder section due to bearing capacity failure and off-tracking of vehicle. The heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka can induce severe erosion problem when using the soft shoulder. To improve the strength and durability of pavement shoulders in the iRoad Project, the soil stabilization will be a good alternative to solve the above mentioned problems. The use of in-situ soils with addition of soil stabilizer enables to reduce the construction cost of shoulder section and mitigate the environment issues. The objective of this task is to review the application of soil stabilization method for soft shoulder construction in the iRoad Project. Firstly, the quantitative analysis of soil strength improvement due to soil stabilization was done for soil samples collected from iRoad construction sites. Two types of soils were selected from iRoad Project sites and prepared for soil stabilization testing by the Road Development Authority. Secondly, the appropriate stabilizer was selected at given soil type based on test results. Three different stabilizers, ST-1, ST-2, and ST-3, produced in Korea were used for estimating soil strength improvements. Finally, the optimum stabilizer content was determined for improving shoulder performance. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test was conducted to evaluate the strength of stabilized soil samples in accordance with ASTM D 1633. The use of bottom ash as a stabilizer produced from power plant in Sri Lanka was also reviewed in this task.
Tram had been widely used in South Korea until 1960s; however, introduction of automobiles made the tram disappear. KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) has developed wireless tram in order to enhance transporting capacity in large city. Continuously supported and embedded track system supports load from a wireless tram. The track system is composed of concrete slab or precast concrete and groove rail. Surface of the track is usually constructed by asphalt concrete. The asphalt concrete layer is about 5 cm in depth and constructed between rails of which width is 1435 mm. Adhesion between concrete slab and asphalt concrete layer and constructability, which affects performance, were investigated through actual construction and testing at test-bed. Four different types of mixtures and structures were used. After construction, adhesion tests were performed including basic material tests. Guss-asphalt with SMA showed the best adhesion and constructability.
Urokinas type plasminogen activator (uPA) has been used as a therapeutic agent for treating human diseases such as thrombosis. Attempts to transgenically overexpress the uPA in animal bioreactors have been hampered due to side effects associated with this functional protein hormone on homeostasis. Recently, chicken has been emerged as a potential candidate for use as bioreactor to produce proteins of pharmaceutical importance. Since this species has low homology uPA sequence with mammals, we hypothesized that chicken could be used as a potential bioreactor for production of human uPA. In this study, using replication‐defective Murine Leukemia Virus (MLV)‐based retrovirus vectors encapsidated with Vesicular Stomatitis Virus G Glycoprotein (VSV‐G), we attempted to make transgenic chicken expressing human uPA (huPA). The recombinant retrovirus was injected beneath the blastoderm of non‐incubated chicken embryos (stage X, at laying). After 21 days of incubation (at hatching), all of the 38 living chicks that assayed, were found to express the vector‐encoded huPA gene in various organs and tissues, which was under the control of the Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) or Cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter. Using specific primer set for huPA, PCR and RTPCR analyses of gDNA isolated from these samples demonstrated these chickens were transgenic for huPA. Furthermore, successful germ line transmission of huPA transgene was confirmed and next generation whole body huPA transgenic chickens were also produced. We also assayed huPA protein titer in blood (17.1 IU/ml) and eggs (4.4 IU/ml) of whole body huPA transgenic chicken. Thus, our results demonstrated that chicken could be used as bioreactors to produce huPA.
