본 연구는 원예활동이 결혼이민자여성의 자존감에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고자 실시하였다. 원예활동프로그램 내용은 결혼이민자여성의 성취감을 고취시킬 수 있는 창작활동, 대인관계 교류를 확대시킬 수 있는 다양한 활동으로 구성되어 있다. 또한 식물가꾸기 등의 원예활동을 통해 생명의 존엄함과 삶의 의지를 심어주고자 하였다. 원예활동 실시 전･후 대상자들의 자아존중감 척도 검사를 한 결과, 대상자들의 자아존중감이 유의미한 향상 효과가 있었다. 한편, 참여관찰기록을 분석한 결과 대상자들의 정서표현, 웃음, 적극성, 타인과의 교류의 빈도와 정도가 증가하였다. 대상자들의 원예활동프로그램의 참여에 대한 만족도 및 진술에서도 성취감, 정서적 안정, 대인관계에서 긍정적 변화를 나타내었다. 이와 같이 결혼이민자여성을 대상으로 원예활동프로그램을 실시한 결과, 자아존중감의 효과와 함께 정서적 안정, 대인관계에서 긍정적 경험을 제공하여 한국사회 문화적응에 긍정적 기대효과를 얻을 수 있었다.

This study developed a group horticultural therapy(HT) for battered women in Korea and tested its effectiveness. The activities in the HT were formatted to increase the self-esteem and decrease the depression. The major finding was that the self-esteem scores significantly increased and the depression scores of the 12 battered women in the experimental group significantly decreased after the intervention. The change in levels of self-esteem and depression in the experimental group were significantly different from those of the 12 the subjects in the control group. Therefore, both family violence victims and assaulters are demanded to introduce the horticultural therapy activities actively.
