        This paper was written to introduce one of US inspection practice using mobile devices such as iPad or Android tablets and other wearable computing devices. Application of mobile device for bridge inspection is to collect all required asset information without filed notes and complete bridge inspection quickly. This provides time-saved input and customized input from the office and on the web. This paper talks about how much this technology is efficiency and useful to give benefit subsequent projects through several US bridge inspection projects performed by Burgess & Niple.

        고속도로교량을 위한 위험도기반점검주기를 제안하였다. 고속도로 교량유지관리시스템에서 얻은 상태데이터를 분석하여 교량상태 열화 에 영향을 주는 위해성인자를 찾았다. 그러한 인자와 상태열화사이의 특정한 상관성을 찾았다. 이들을 이용하여 위해성점수를 평가하는데 이용하였다. 여러 가지 위해성 인자들을 종합하여 최종 위해성을 높음, 보통, 낮음의 세 단계로 구분하였다. 취약성은 교량의 현재상태로 평가하였다. 위험도행렬을 점검주기를 위해 제안하였다. C, D, E등급 교량의 점검주기는 현행대로 유지하였다. 그러나, 보통과 높음으로 위 해성이 평가된 A 및 B 등급교량은 점검주기를 최대 6년까지 연장하였고 최소주기는 현행과 같이 3년으로 하였다. 위험도 평가에 따라 점 검주기를 보정하므로써 평균 점검인력을 27% 절약할 수 있었다.

        The maintenance costs will be increased due to the aging of the bridge. Thus, the maintenance strategy considering the damage characteristic of elements is needed for the efficient maintenance of the bridge. The objective of this research is that damage characteristic were estimated by analyzing the change in the presence or absence of damage to a structural member of the bridge for the detailed safety inspection conducted two or more times.

        Risk Based Inspection(RBI) Period was proposed for highway bridges in Korea. Hazard factors affecting bridge condition deterioration were found by analyzing condition data from Highway Bridge Management System(HBMS). Certain level of correlations between those factors and condition deterioration were found. They are used to evaluate hazard score. Summarizing several hazard factors, final hazard is classified as three level;high, moderate, low. Vulnerability is assessed only by the current state of bridge. Then, risk matrix is suggested for inspection periods. Inspection periods of the bridges with grade C, D, and E are maintained the same as before. But, those of grade A and B with moderate and high hazard score are elongated to maximum 6 years while the maximum inspection period is three years at present. By adjusting inspection period according to risk assessment, it was shown that 27% of average inspection manpower can be saved.

        The amount of newly-built bridges has been gradually reduced so that the importance of maintenance for existing bridges which has a long services period is issued. Therefore, the maintenance budget for existing bridges is going to be consistently increased. It is needed that a reasonable decision-making methodology for existing bridge maintenance is required to effectively use the limited maintenance budget. In this study, a method of the structural vulnerability evaluation is newly suggested as the one of the evaluation stage for developing a reasonable decision-making methodology.

        In this paper, we propose a cable climbing robot which can climb up and down the cables in the bridges. The robot mechanism consists of three parts: a wheel based driving mechanism, adhesion mechanism, and safe landing mechanism. The wheel based driving mechanism is driven by tooth clutches and motors. The adhesion mechanism plays the role of maintaining adhesion force by a combination of pantograph, ball screw, and springs even when the power is lost. The safe landing mechanism is developed for guaranteeing the safety of the robot during operations on cables. It can make the robot fall down with reduced speed by dissipating the gravitational forces. The robot mechanism is designed and manufactured for validating its effectiveness.

        Damages due to typhoon and floods are increasing as a result of global warming and abnormal climate phenomenon over the world. Flood and scour is one of the major causes for bridge collapse. However, maintenance and inspection techniques still need improvements especially for underwater structures like bridge piers in rivers. Conventionally, manual inspection by divers has been carried out for underwater structures of bridges. This has difficulties in gathering accurate and reliable field data under severe environmental conditions. Therefore, in this study, underwater inspection of bridges has been carried out using the side scan sonar (SSS), one of unmanned underwater inspection equipment. Compared to the conventional manual inspection, it has been found that the SSS can be efficiently utilized to underwater inspection of bridges especially with bad visibility or large-scale inspection area.

        최근 세계가 빠른 속도로 발전하여 교량의 장대화등 특수교량이 늘어나며 예측할 수 없는 대형 자연재해와 인명피해가 발생하는 상황에서 보다 지능적인 점검 시스템이 필요한 상황이다. 교량 유지관리는 안전점검을 통하여 교량의 수명을 최대화 하며 사고발생을 예측할 수 있는 만큼 중요시 되지만, 현재 시행되고 있는 구조물의 점검은 대부분 육안점검이나 수동 측정 장비에 의존하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 접근이 가능한 구간에만 국한되어 있으며, 기존의 모니터링 시스템은 계측만을 위하여 사용되어 지고 있어 계측을 통한 안전확보가 미흡한 상태이다. 따라서 교량의 신축⋅회전 변위흡수, 하중전달의 역할을 하는 핵심적인 교좌장치의 기존 점검방식 문제점을 개선한 유비쿼터스 자동점검시스템을 제시하며 USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network)기술과 LVDT, 센서를 이용하여 실시간 교좌장치 이동변위를 전송받고, 이동변위의 설정된 한계 값을 초과할시 교량관리 시스템에서 자동으로 액추에이터를 구동하여 VMS와 SMS를 통해 정보를 제공하는 자동점검시스템을 개발하는데 목적이 있다.

        This paper proposes a bridge inspection system using a robot to manage the safety status of bridges. A conventional bridge inspection has a lot of problems because inspection is conducted manually by human. As an alternative, we are to develop a robot system having machine vision and this robot system is mounted on an end linkage of specially designed car having seven DOF (Degrees Of Freedom) to inspect cracks beneath bridge. This system is able to check a status of the bridge and record its changes every other year. As a result, the developed robot system offers us the inspection result of quality and reliability about the bridge inspection status. Also, we have tested the effectiveness of the suggested system through outdoor experiments.
