The management of household hazardous waste (HHW), a component of municipal solid waste (MSW) has become a major of concern partly due to their potential toxicity upon disposal. Improper management of such waste can deteriorate the environment and cause serious damage to the human health. This paper discusses the current fundamental management practices, which include the generation rate, collection systems and treatment using the survey reviews of households and interviews held with experts in the Daejeon metropolitan city. Surveys of more than 378 people in Daejeon Metropolitan City were conducted to investigate the characteristics, generation rate, social behavior and awareness regarding disposal of HHW. The target items used in this study includes used lamps, used batteries, pharmaceuticals, and household pesticide chemicals. According to the survey conducted, the generation rates of HHW varied depending upon the dwelling type, collection system, and waste type. Apartment complex residents participated actively in source separation, using the established collection system with limited items (e.g., fluorescent lamps and batteries), while single family housing residents tend to store HHW at households. There is still a need for public awareness, detailed policies and legislation requiring source segregation at households, and better collection systems for HHW. The results of this study can be used for developing better management of HHW in municipal solid waste streams to prevent potential environmental impacts and human health risks.

Mercury distribution and hazardous characteristics of major components from SCFLs (Spent compact fluorescent lamps)for 3 lamp manufactures (A, B, C) are estimated by the analysis of mercury concentration and leaching tests such asKorean Extraction Test (KET) and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). SCFLs can be separated into glasstube, phosphor powder, metals, ballast, plastics, and binder. Through the analysis of mercury in major components forSCFL, mercury concentration in phosphor powder is much higher than that in other components regardless manufacturesof lamp. Also, mercury concentration in phosphor powder is dependent of the manufactures of lamp. From the leachingtests, all components except phosphor powder from 3 lamp manufactures are verified to be non-hazardous waste becauseall leaching concentrations are below the regulatory level. However, the leaching concentration of mercury in phosphorpowder of SCFLs is higher than the regulatory level in both KET and TCLP regardless manufactures of lamp. Hence, phosphor powder should be managed as a hazardous waste and should be separately managed to control mercury.

This study investigated the prospective increase in the amount of hazardous substances in packing containers. Thestudy's aim was to analyse phthalates, which are regulated for use in food containers in the EU, as well as four heavymetals (Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cr6+) regulated domestically and abroad. Furthermore, we endeavored to confirm the need foradditional regulations for packaging material by analysing PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers), a brominated flameretardant that has recently become an issue because of its wide use in plastic packaging. The concentration of the heavymetal, namely Pb, Cd, Hg and Cr6+ in packaging material samples were in ranged from ND to 7.2mg/kg, ND to 0.47mg/kg, ND to 0.07mg/kg, and ND to 5.01mg/kg, respectively. With total concentration of the four heavy metals (ΣPb+Cd+Hg+Cr6+) ranging from ND to 9.14mg/kg, all samples were below the standard threshold (Σ 100mg/kg). Theconcentration of phthalates in packaging samples was less than the standard of all foreign nations of 0.1% (1,000mg/kg). In particular, DEHP, DEHA, and DBP were detected higher in smart phone cases than others; other materials werefound to be at similar levels. The concentration of PBDEs in packaging material samples was detected in the range ofND to 24.2mg/kg, thereby not exceeding the standard of WEEE and RoHS of 0.1% (1,000mg/kg) for electrical appliancesand electronics.

Various foreign materials such as contaminated soil, woody waste, drums containing waste oil, waste transformer, and waste pressure vessel are generated during the collecting and sorting processes of steel scrap. Recently, environmental problems have occurred because of the use of steel scrap that contained contaminants and was not separated properly. And this has also affected the quality of iron products made of steel scrap. Particularly, contaminated soil is highly likely to contain various hazardous substances including heavy metals, which is why proper management standards for contaminated soil are necessary. In this study, concentrations of heavy metals, BTEX, TPH, PAHs, and hazardous materials in contaminated soil were analyzed. It was found that the concentrations of lead and zinc were higher than other heavy metals and iron also showed high concentration. The very high TPH concentration in contaminated soil implies that contaminated soil was polluted by diesel, fuel oil or lubricant. So the comprehensive management regulatory plan and management standard for the hazardous materials are necessary for environmentally-friendly recycling of steel and iron scrap.

This study analyzed concentration and characteristics of hazardous substances in treatment of leachate from carcass burial areas by using high temperature thermal desorption (HTTD). Concentrations of pollutants emitted from HTTD treatment of leachate contaminated soil of carcass burial sites satisfied the emission standards for 11 pollutants from domestic waste incineration facilities. Dioxin concentration was 0.0060 ng I-TEQ/Sm3 and 0.0061 (0.0055-0.0070) ng ITEQ/ Sm3 in the normal operation condition and the experimental condition, respectively, which are much lower than the MSWI Standard of 0.1ng I-TEQ/Sm3. As a result, it was considered that leachate from carcass burial areas could be treated by high temperature thermal desorption (HTTD).

This paper analyzed thermal and carbonization properties of sewage sludge in fixed bed reactor and obtained following results. The heavy metal (Pb, Ni, Mn, Cr, Cu) content of Char showed the highest level at unprocessed sewage sludge, followed by carbonized sludge at 600, 400, and 500oC. It was thought to be mainly due to the yield of char rather than the influence of temperature. Also, the migration-test results of heavy metals satisfied the landfill directive in all samples, which may be possible to use it as landfill cover materials. The concentration of dioxin by changes of pyrolysis temperature was higher in the low temperature conditions and the proportion of PCDDs was higher than that of PCDFs.

As the industrial and urban development has been accelerated, the issues on Hazardous wastes (HWs) management have become important. HWs that are not included in the code lists are also managed by hazardous characteristics and determination methods in Korea. This study has been performed to investigate corrosive characteristics of hazardous wastes (HWs) depending on pH variations. We considered the type, discharge process and pH of the 14,000 corrosive waste dischargers, of which we visited 60 sites and collected 68 waste acid and alkali samples. Based on results using corrosive testing methods of the USA (EPA Method 1110A) and the Japanese environmental agency (Appendix 8 of the Japan Standard Methods on Specific HWs), it was found that, of total 54 waste acids with pH 2 or below, 47 samples by the USA EPA Methods, and 37 samples by the Japanese testing method exceeded the limit value of the corrosive rate, while 5 waste alkalic samples with pH 12.5 or above did not exceed the limit value of the corrosion rate. Besides, 9 samples with a pH higher than 2 and less than 12.5 failed to meet the corrosive rate limit. It was determined that 17 samples with a pH less than 2, which did not satisfy the standard corrosion rate, gained more weight, due to the acid deposition from acid gas on their exposed surface. Thus, it is assumed that the USA EPA Method is more strictly applicable than the Japanese Method.
