대도시에서 초고층 건물의 필요성은 구조 기술자에게 새로운 문제를 안겨주었다. 기둥축소의 효과는 설계 및 시공에 있어 특별한 주의를 요구한다. 기둥의 축소는 칸막이, 마감, 그리고 설비체계와 같이 수직하중을 지탱하도록 고려되어 있지 않은 비구조적인 요소에 영향을 미친다. 또한 각 기둥의 축소량 차이는 주위의 슬래브 및 보와 같은 부재들을 경사지게 한다. 축소량을 예측하는 목적은 부등 축소량의 차이를 미리 보정하는데 있다. 본 연구는 부동 축소량에 의한 주구조부재의 영향에 대한 내용을 다루었다. 자중으로 인해 초지 수직변위를 갖는 52층 철근콘크리트 구조물에 지진하중을 적용하여 구조물에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 각 수직구조요소에 대한 축소량은 전산화된 기둥축소 해석 프로그램을 이용하여 예측되었으며 지진하중으로 인한 축소량이 보정된 구조물과 보정되지 않은 구조물 사이의 응력을 조사하였다.

건물기초롤 지진절연하면 건물뿐만 아니라 그 내부구조물의 지진웅답도 크게 감소한다는 사실이 많은 연구 를 통해 확인되어 왔다. 그런데 이러한 내부구조물이 유체내에 잠기고 부가질량효과가 크게 작용되는 조건에 놓이는 경우 오히려 지진응답이 중가할 수 있다. 본 논문은 건물 내 수중구조물의 지진해석올 통해 그러한 예 를 제시하고자 한다. 해석결과 지진절연된 건물의 경우 이러한 내부 수중구조물의 지진웅답이 상당히 증가할 수 있기 때문에 이에 대한 조치가 필요함을 보였고， 적절한 설계에 의하여 부가질량효과를 조절함으로써 어느 정도 응답을 줄일 수 있다는 사실을 알 수 있었다.

본 연구에서는 지진에 대한 고층건물의 응답특성, 그리고 지진응답에 미치는 중력하중의 영향과 중력하중의 영향이 내진설계에 미치는 중요성을 산정하였다. 이를 위해서 예제 구조물에 대한 정적해석 및 지진하중에 대한 동적해석을 하였다. 지진에 대한 고층건물의 지진응답 특성을 파악하기 위하여 비탄성 변형의 건물 높이에 따른 분포를 알아보았다. 지진이 발생하면 휨모멘트 요구도가 건물의 상부층보다 하부층에서 상대적으로 더 많이 증가해서 설계모멘트와의 차이가 건물의 하부층으로 갈수록 더 커진다. 그 결과 현재 쓰이는 내진설계방법에 따라 설계된 예제 건물들은 지진에 대하여 비탄성 응답이 건물의 각 층마다 서로 다르게 발생하는데 주로 건물의 하부층에서 큰 비탄성 응답이 발생한다. 또한 설계시에 고려된 중력하중 때문에 구조적 손상이 건물의 꼭대기 층에서 아래로 갈수록 크게 증가한다. 구조물의 지진응답에 관하여 중력하중은 보의 항복시간을 앞당기며, 보의 양단의 소성힌지에 각기 다른 비탄성 거동을 유발시킨다. 그러나 중력하중에 의한 초기 휨모멘트의 영향은 보가 비탄성 거동을 계속함에 따라 재분배되어 보의 양단에서 그 영향이 감소되며 비탄성 변형이 계속되면 크게 감소한다. 중력하중에 의한 초기 휨모멘트의 영향이 감소는 고층건물의 내진설계에 있어서 중력하중의 영향이 주는 의미는 기둥과 보의 휨강도를 결정할 때 현재의 방법보다 중력하중의 영향을 줄이고 지진하중의 영향을 증가시켜야 한다는 것이다.
