The purpose of using coolant in machining is both to increase a tool life and also to prevent product deformation and thus, stabilize the surface quality by lubricating and cooling the tool and the machining surface. However, a very small amount of cutting mist should be used because chlorine-based extreme pressure additives are used to generate environmental pollutants in the production process and cause occupational diseases of workers. In this study, medical titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-7Nb) was subjected to a processing experiment by selecting factors and levels affecting cutting power in the processing of the Aerosol Dry Lubrication (ADL) method using vegetable oil. The machining shape was a slot to sufficiently reflect the effect of the cutting depth. As for the measurement of cutting force, the trend of cutting characteristics was identified through complete factor analysis. The factors affecting the cutting force of ADL slot processing were identified using the reaction surface analysis method, and the characteristics of the cutting force according to the change in factor level were analyzed. As the cutting speed increased, the cutting force decreased and then increased again. The cutting force continued to increase as the feed speed increased. The increase in the cutting depth increased the cutting force more significantly than the increase in the cutting speed and the feed speed. Through the reaction surface analysis method, the regression equation for predicting cutting force was identified, and the optimal processing conditions were proposed. The cutting force was predicted from the secondary regression equation and compared with the experimental value.

Recently, with the development of ultra-precision technology, the quality improvement of optical parts and various products is emerging. The need for a difficult-to-cut material that is light and exhibits high hardness and high strength physical properties is being emphasized. Ultra-precision machining processing solutions for these difficult-to-cut materials are being actively developed. In this research, experiments were performed using a DTM machine equipped with a laser-assisted machining module for ultra-precision machining of CaF2 materials that are brittle but exhibit high transmittance in a wide range from ultraviolet to infrared.

In this research, the magnetic abrasive finishing process using (Nd-Fe-B) permanent magnet was applied to confirm the performance and to find the optimum conditions. The STS304 bar was used as the specimen in this experiment. In order to confirm the performance of magnetic abrasive finishing process, the surface roughness (Ra) and diameter reduction were measured when the specimens were processed under the conditions of rotational speeds, frequencies, and magnetic pole shapes. The rotational speeds were varied at 8000rpm, 15000rpm, 20000rpm, and 25000rpm. And the frequencies were changed to 0Hz, 4Hz and 10Hz. Also the shapes of the magnetic pole were changed to flat edge, sharp edge and round edge. It can be concluded that the surface roughness (Ra) and diameter reduction were found to be the best at 25000rpm, 4Hz, flat edge.

The optical film for light luminance improvement of back light unit that is used in light emitting diode/liquid crystal display and retro-reflective film is used as luminous sign consist of square and triangular pyramid structure pattern based on V-shape micro prism pattern. In this study, we analyzed machining characteristics of Cu-plated flat mold by shaping with diamond tool. First, cutting conditions were optimized as V-groove machining for the experiment of micro prism structure mold machining with prism pattern shape, cutting force and roughness. Second, the micro prism structure such as square and triangular pyramid pattern were machined by cross machining method with optimizing cutting conditions. Variation of Burr and chip shape were discussed by material properties and machining method.

Ti alloys are extensively used in high-technology application because of their strength, oxidation resistance at high temperature. However, Ti alloys tend to be classified very difficult to cut material. In this paper, The powder synthesis, spark plasma sintering (SPS), bulk material properties such as electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity are systematically examined on Ti2AlN and Ti2AlC materials having most light-weight and oxidation resistance among the MAX phases. The bulk samples mainly consisted of Ti2AlN and Ti2AlC materials with density close to theoretical value were synthesized by a SPS method. Machining characteristics such as machining time, surface quality are analyzed with measurement of voltage and current waveform according to machining condition of micro-electrical discharge machining with micro-channel shape.

Tool tips of the circular saw for the steel cutting have commonly applied to brazing type welded the saw body to tips. In this case, when the tool tip is required to the exchange, many problems were occurred as the exchange cost is high and its time is long. In this study, to resolve the brazing type circular saw, the insert type circular saw has designed and made. Also, to confirm the performance of new type circular saw, the various experiments were carried out under condition of tip's shape and machining conditions.

Micro trench structures are applied in gratings, security films, wave guides, and micro fluidics. These micro trench structures have commonly been fabricated by micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) process. However, if the micro trench structures are machined using a diamond tool on large area plate, the resulting process is the most effective man- ufacturing method for products with high quality surfaces and outstanding optical characteristics. A nonferrous metal has been used as a workpiece; recently, and hybrid materials, including polymer materials, have been applied to mold for display fields. Thus, the machining characteristics of polymer materials should be analyzed. In this study, machining characteristics were compared between nonferrous metals and polymer materials using single crystal diamond (SCD) tools; the use of such materials is increasing in machining applications. The experiment was conducted using a square type diamond tool and a shaper machine tool with cutting depths of 2, 4, 6 and 10 µm and a cutting speed of 200 mm/s. The machined surfaces, chip, and cutting force were compared through the experiment.

The liquid-phase sintering method was used to prepare a glass lens forming core composed of SiC-Al2O3-Y2O3. Spark plasma sintering was used to obtain dense sintered bodies. The sintering characteristics of different SiC sources and compositions of additives were studied. Results revealed that, owing to its initial larger surface area, α-SiC offers sinterability that is superior to that of β-SiC. A maximum density of 3.32 g/cm3 (theoretical density [TD] of 99.7%) was obtained in α-SiC-10 wt% (6Al2O3-4Y2O3) sintered at 1850˚C without high-energy ball milling. The maximum hardness and compression stress of the sintered body reached 2870 Hv and 1110 MPa, respectively. The optimum ultra-precision machining parameters were a grinding speed of 1243 m/min, work spindle rotation rate of 100 rpm, feed rate of 0.5 mm/min, and depth of cut of 0.2 μm. The surface roughnesses of the thus prepared final products were Ra = 4.3 nm and Rt = 55.3 nm for the aspheric lens forming core and Ra = 4.4 nm and Rt = 41.9 for the spherical lens forming core. These values were found to be sufficiently low, and the cores showed good compatibility between SiC and the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating material. Thus, these glass lens forming cores have great potential for application in the lens industry.
