Agrophotovoltaic (APV) system is an integrated system producing crops as well as solar energy. Because crop production underneath Photovoltaic (PV) modules requires delicate management of crops, smart farming equipment such as real-time remote monitoring sensors (e.g., thermometers, irradiance sensors, and soil moisture sensors) is installed in the APV system. This study aims at introducing a simulation-based decision support system (DSS) for smart farming in an APV system. The proposed DSS is devised to provide a mobile application service, satellite image processing, real-time data monitoring, and simulation-based performance estimation. Particularly, an agent-based simulation (ABS) is used to mimic functions of an APV system so that a data-driven function and digital twin environment are implemented in the proposed system. The ABS model is validated with field data collected from an actual APV system at the Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services in South Korea. As a result, farmers and engineers enable to efficiently produce solar energy without causing harmful impact on regular crop production underneath PV modules. In addition, the proposed system will contribute to enhancement of the digital twin technology in the field of agriculture.

Large-scale adoption of alternative agricultural practices is needed to manage farm productivity and resources under global changes. Ecosystem models are a tool for developing and evaluating potential solutions at management and policy scales. However, data collection and compilation often lack documentation that hinders model calibration and testing. The objectives of this study were to describe the current soil datasets and to combine soil property data from various sources that are sufficient to support the use of agricultural models under Korean conditions. Numerous sources provide soil data that describe the farm environment by land cover, such as rice and other field crops. The interquartile range of soil organic carbon was 9.10–14.50 g kg-1 across paddy and non-rice field systems. The results suggest that it is premature to perform site-specific simulations of farming systems due to no direct carbon accounting and hydrological conditions of the soil. Global gridded soil information, such as SoilGrids, may supplement the local data, especially soil organic carbon (the interquartile range of 23.43–36.92 g kg-1). However, the descriptive statistics of soil properties extracted from the datasets were not in agreement. Because the Korean agricultural land is characterized by small size (less than 1 ha) and family operation as a management unit, it is crucial to build datasets more representative of small-size farms and relevant to the new generation of models.

Ball stud parts are manufactured by a cold forging process, and fastening with other parts is secured through a head part cutting process. In order to improve process quality, stabilization of the forging quality of the head is given priority. To this end, in this study, a predictive model was developed for the purpose of improving forging quality. The prediction accuracy of the model based on 450 data sets acquired from the manufacturing site was low. As a result of gradually multiplying the data set based on FE simulation, it was expected that it would be possible to develop a predictive model with an accuracy of about 95%. It is essential to build automated labeling of forging load and dimensional data at manufacturing sites, and to apply a refinement algorithm for filtering data sets. Finally, in order to optimize the ball stud manufacturing process, it is necessary to develop a quality prediction model linked to the forging and cutting processes.

Considering the Fukushima nuclear accident and the marine discharge plan of contaminated (or treated) water, it is necessary a seafood monitoring system for radioactive material screening. Currently, radioactivity tests in seafood are conducting in Korea. Although current method using a HPGe detector can provide very low uncertainty in determining radioactivity, there is a limitation in that rapid inspection cannot be performed because of a time-consuming pretreatment process as well as long measurement time (typically 10,000 s). To overcome this limitation, we are developing an insitu inspection device, a kind of screening system, which can monitor the radioactivity in seafood in a near real-time basis. In this study, the actual seafood with a check source was measured to verify the reliability of the Monte Carlo simulation model. The detector used in the experiment was a 5-cm-thick polyvinyl toluene (PVT) plastic scintillator with a 0.5-cm-thick lead shield for background reduction. A Cs-137 check source was placed within seafood. The seafood used in the experiment was fishcake, raw oyster, and dried laver, which is the representative seafood of fish, shellfish, and seaweed. These three seafood products of the same size and shape as the manufacturing process were used to predict the performance realistically. We compared the energy spectrum of the Cs-137 check source obtained from measurements and simulations. The region of interest (ROI) around the Compton edge was set to reduce the influence of the background and electronic noise. The results showed that the measured and simulated spectrum were in good agreement.

The RPV internal structure is a high radio activated part and has very complex geometry. Therefore, it needs to be cut remotely with an automated cutting system to minimize the worker exposures. To do so, we made up the remote laser cutting system with a laser cutter, robot manipulator and control software system and the laser cutter is moved by the robot manipulator based on the command from the control software system. A laser cutter is required to keep the desired standoff position between the nozzle of the laser cutter and surface of the cut target model to cut properly. Moreover, in the remote cutting process, an exact time and sequence control of the air supply and the laser emission is required for the cutting quality and the process safety. In this study, we proposed the PERT chart-based process execution and control methodology. The PERT chart is a graph which is represented by nodes and edges. The node of the PERT chart has the information about the activity details such as activity type, execution time and related device. Using the edge we make the sequence of the desired activity execution. A PERT chart of the cutting scenario is compiled in the control software system to creates data and thread structure to operate the physical device. We built software architecture to interpret and execute the PERT chart efficiently in the digital simulation platform which enables us to use existing pre-built simulation scenario for the laser cutting process. In addition, we have tested various laser cutting test cases in our test bed to verify the performance of our system. The test bed environment has the shape of the RPV internal structure and is placed under water.

The decommissioning process of Kori Nuclear Power Plant No.1, which was permanently suspended in 2017, various studies and attention on the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and waste management are being focused. In particular, decommissioning of high-risk facilities should take into account both safety and economic aspects. Small defects in the decommissioning process may lead to major disasters, and the resulting economic losses will cause enormous damage at the national level. In order to prevent such damage, various decommissioning process simulations within a virtual environment should be performed, and process errors and results should be collected and analyzed through simulation to derive the optimal decommissioning scenario as possible. The platform introduced in this paper builds a virtual environment based on drawing and modeling data of Kori Nuclear Power Plant No.1 and automatically creates an optimized cutting path for dismantling the facility and internal structure, and simulates a cutting process similar to reality using Robot Arm. In addition, it is possible to derive and analyze a cutting process scenario by processing process results such as time required for work and cutting distance collected through simulation.

Organic waste generated by small and medium-sized (S&M-sized) metal decontamination in NPP decommissioning. To lower the concentration of these organic substances for a level acceptable at the disposal site, the project of “Development of Treatment Process of Organic Decontamination Liquid Wastes from Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants” is being carried out. The conditioning and treatment process of organic liquid waste was designed. Also, the literature was investigated to make simulated organic liquid waste, and the composition of these waste was analyzed and compared. As the decontamination agent, organic acids such as EDTA, oxalic acid, citric acid are used. The sum of the concentrations of these organic materials was set to a maximum value of 1,000 ppm. The major metal ions of the decontamination liquid waste estimated are 59Fe, 51Cr, 54Mn, 63Ni, and the concentrations are respectively 527, 163, 161, 159 ppm. Additional major metal ions are 60Co, 58Co, 137Cs. 58Co is replaced by 60Co because it has the same chemical properties as 60Co. Unlike the HLW, the contamination level of S&M-sized metal in primary system was quite low, so 60Co is set to 2,000 Bq/g. Considering the contribution of fission and gamma ray dose constant, 137Cs was estimated to 360 Bq/g. Also, suspended solids of decontamination liquid waste were set at 500 ppm. Under these assumptions, the simulated organic liquid waste was made, and then organic substances and metal ions were analyzed with TOC analyzer and ICP-OES. The TOC analysis value was expected to 392 ppm in consideration of the equivalent organic quantity. the test result was 302 ppm. Some of organics appears to have been decomposed by acid. The values of metal ions (Fe3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ni2+) analyzed by ICP-OES are 139, 4, 152, 158 ppm, respectively. A large amount of Cr3+ and Fe3+ were expected to exist as ions, but they existed in the form of suspended solid. Mn2+ and Ni2+ came out similar to the expected values. The designed conditioning and treatment process is largely divided into pretreatment, conditioning, and decomposition processes. After collecting in the primary liquid waste storage tank, large particulate impurities and suspensions are removed through a pretreatment process. In the conditioning process, treated liquid waste passes through UF/RO membrane system, and pure water is discharged to the environment after monitoring. Concentrated water is decomposed in the electrochemical catalyst decomposition process, then this water secondarily passes through the RO membrane system and then discharged to the environment after monitoring. Through an additional experiment, the conditioning and treatment process will be verified.

Montmorillonite plays a key role in engineered barrier systems in the high-level radioactive waste repository because of its large sorption capacity and high swelling pressure. However, the sorption capacity of montmorillonite can be largely varied dependent on the surrounding environments. This study conducted the batch simulation for U(VI) sorption on Na-montmorillonite by utilizing the cation exchange and surface complexation coupled (2SP-NE-SC/CE) model and evaluated the effects of physicochemical properties (i.e., pH, temperature, competing cations, U(VI) concentration, and carbonate species) on U(VI) sorption. The simulation demonstrated that the U(VI) sorption was affected by physicochemical properties: the pH and temperature relate to aqueous U(VI) speciation, the competing cations relate to the cation exchange process and selectivity, the U(VI) concentration relates to saturation at sorption sites. For example, the Kd (L kg−1) of Na-montmorillonite represented the largest values of 2.7×105 L kg−1 at neutral pH condition and had significantly decreased at acidic pH<3, showing non-linear and diverse U(VI) sorption at the ranged pH from 2 to 11. Additionally, the U(VI) sorption on montmorillonite significantly decreased in presence of carbonate species. The U(VI) sorption for long-term in actual porewater chemistry and temperature of high-level radioactive waste repository represented that the sorption capacity of Na-montmorillonite was affected by various external properties such as concentration of competing cation, temperature, pH, and carbonate species. These results indicate that geochemical sorption capacity of bentonite should be evaluated by considering both geological and aquifer environments in the high-level radioactive waste repository.

The detector response was simulated to design a fork detection system for verifying the characteristics of spent fuel. The fork detection system currently used consists of two fission chamber and an ion chamber, and it is nuclear safeguard equipment that measures the gross neutrons and gross gamma rays emitted from the spent fuel assembly to identify the characteristics of the spent fuel and verify the authenticity of the operation history. In order to improve the current fork detection system, we are developing a system that applies CZT, a room temperature semiconductor detector, and a stilbene detector, which is an organic scintillator. Depletion calculations were performed using the ORIGEN code to determine the radiological characteristics emitted from spent nuclear fuel assembly. The flux of radiation emitted from the spent nuclear fuel assembly was calculated by changing the conditions such as initial enrichment, burnup, and cooling time, which are major variables of spent fuel assembly. The calculated result is used as the source term of the particle transport code. Considering the general operating conditions of the pressurized light water reactor, the conditions were changed in the range of 3-5% for initial enrichment and 30-72 GWD/MTU for burnup, and the cooling time was given within 10 years. MCNP 6.2, a Monte Carlo simulation code, was used to simulate the detector response to radiation emitted from spent nuclear fuel assembly. According to the shape, size, and position of the CZT detector, the gamma counts incident on the detector were calculated and derived the initial design of our fork detection system.

Nuclear power plants, which are important national facilities, require special attention against the threat of terrorism using various methods. Among the terrorist threats, as structural damage and human casualties due to explosions continue to occur, interest in the blast load is increasing. However, domestic nuclear power plants do not have sufficient design requirements for protection against the threat of explosives. To prepare for the threat of terrorism using explosives, it is necessary to evaluate the physical protection performance of nuclear power plants against blast load, and to use this to improve protection performance and establish regulatory standards. Most of the explosion-proof designs used abroad use the empirical chart presented by UFC 3-340- 02 (DoD 2008), which does not take into account the effect of near-field explosions. When explosions occur inside nuclear power plants, near-field explosions occur in most cases. In this study, it was assumed that explosives were installed in the corridor inside nuclear power plants. A spherical TNT was placed in the middle of the corridor floor to simulate near-field explosions, and the structure response according to the weight of the TNT was evaluated. The corridor was modeled with a reinforced concrete material and the LS-DYNA program was used for analysis. For the explosion model, the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) analysis technique applying the advantages of the Lagrangian and Eulerian methods were used. By analyzing the pressure history and the degree of deformation of the structure according to the explosion, the degree of threat caused by the explosion was analyzed. Based on the analysis of this study, physical barriers performance database (DB) using Modeling & Simulation (M&S) will be constructed by performing sensitive analysis such as representative structure shape setting, boundary conditions, material of structures, etc. The constructed DB is expected to be used to establish regulatory standards for the physical barriers of nuclear power plants related to explosives.

The crisis of climate change aroused international needs to reduce the greenhouse gas emission in energy sector. Government of South Korea formulated an agenda of carbon neutrality through announcing 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Scenario A and B in October 2021. As the power supply from renewable energy increases, it becomes a core element to take into account the daily intermittency of renewable energy in analyzing the upcoming energy plans. However, the existing yearly Load Duration Curve is insufficient for applying day and night power change in daily scale into energy mix analysis, since it derives the energy mix for whole year on the basis of classifying annual base load and peak load. Therefore, a new energy mix simulation model based on the daily power load and supply simulation is needed for the future energy analysis. In this study we developed a new model which simulates the average power supply and demand daily (over a 24 hour period) for each season. The model calculates the excess and shortage power during day and night by integrating each energy’s daily power pattern. The 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Scenario A was used for the model verification, during which the same amounts of power production from each energy source were applied: nuclear, renewable, carbon-free gas turbine, fuel cell and byproduct gas. Total power demand pattern and renewable energy production pattern were drawn from the data of 2017 power production, and Pumped-storage Hydroelectricity and Energy Storage System were used as day-to-night conversion. Detailed assumptions for each energy were based on the Basis of Calculation for Net-Zero Carbon Scenario from Government. The model was verified with three cases which were divided depending on the method of hydrogen production and whether the Curtailment and Conversion Loss (CCL) of renewable energy were considered or not. Case 1 assumed production of hydrogen occurred for 24 hours while not considering CCL, had 0% relative error in comparison of total annual power production, and case 2, considering CCL, had a 1.741% relative error. Case 3 assumed production of hydrogen occurred only during daytime with excess power and CCL consideration, yielded 0.493% relative error in total amount of hydrogen production, confirming that the model sufficiently describes the Government’s Scenario A with the input of total power production. This model is expected to be used for analyzing further energy mix with different ratios of each energy source, with special focus on nuclear and renewable energy sources.
