This study examines the volatilization of alkali elements on the surfaces of ceramic targets and in the deposited films during the deposition of potassium sodium niobate (KNN) thin films using a ceramic target with the nominal composition K0.55Na0.55NbO3 via a RF magnetron sputtering process. Under a 100 W RF power condition, significant volatilization of alkali elements occurred on the surface of the ceramic target, resulting in the inevitable formation of a Nb-rich secondary phase in the thin films. However, perovskite-phase KNN thin films with excellent reproducibility and without secondary phases were obtained under 50 W RF power and a substrate temperature of 600 °C. When the RF power was reduced to 20 W or the substrate temperature was lowered to 500 °C under 50 W RF power, no crystalline thin films could be obtained. Additionally, when the substrate temperature was raised to 700 °C under 50 W RF power, the niobium-rich secondary phase appeared in the thin films due to the volatilization of alkali elements. The conditions of 50 W RF power and a substrate temperature of 600 °C were found to be optimal for depositing perovskite-phase KNN thin films. However, complete suppression of potassium volatilization from the thin films was not achievable. Consequently, the resulting films had a sodium-rich composition compared to K0.5Na0.5NbO3 and exhibited lower dielectric constants along with relaxor ferroelectric characteristics. This study highlights the importance of monitoring the compositional changes in ceramic targets during the RF sputtering process to ensure high reproducibility in KNN thin film fabrication.
Crystalline heptazine carbon nitride (HCN) is an ideal photocatalyst for photocatalytic ammonia synthesis. However, the limited response to visible light has hindered its further development. As a noble metal, Au nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance the light absorption capability of photocatalysts by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. Therefore, a series of Au NPs-loaded crystalline carbon nitride materials (AH) were prepared for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The results showed that the AH displayed significantly improved light absorption and decreased recombination rate of photo-generated carriers owing to the introduction of Au NPs. The optimal 2AH (loaded with 2 wt% Au) sample demonstrated the best photocatalytic performance for ammonia production with a yield of 70.3 μmol g− 1 h− 1, which outperformed that of HCN. This can be attributed to the SPR effect of Au NPs and alkali metal of HCN structure. These findings provide a theoretical basis for studying noble metal-enhanced photocatalytic activity for nitrogen fixation and offer new insights into advances in efficient photocatalysts.
AR (alkali resistant)-glass fibers were developed to provide better alkali resistance, but there is currently no research on AR-glass fiber manufacturing. In this study, we fabricated glass fiber from AR-glass using a continuous spinning process with 40 wt% refused coal ore. To confirm the melting properties of the marble glass, raw material was put into a (platinum) Pt crucible and melted at temperatures up to 1,650 °C for 2 h and then annealed. To confirm the transparent clear marble glass, visible transmittance was measured and the fiber spinning condition was investigated by high temperature viscosity measurement. A change in diameter was observed according to winding speed in the range of 100 to 700 rpm. We also checked the change in diameter as a function of fiberizing temperature in the range of 1,240 to 1,340 °C. As winding speed increased at constant temperature, fiber diameter tended to decrease. However, at fiberizing temperature at constant winding speed, fiber diameter tended to increase. The properties of the prepared spinning fibers were confirmed by optical microscope, tensile strength, modulus and alkali-resistance tests.
Vitrification is one of the best ways to immobilize high-level radioactive waste (HLW) worldwide over the past 50 years. Since the glass matrix has a medium (3.0-5.5 A) and short (1.5-3.0 A) periodicity, it can accommodate most elements from the periodic table. Borosilicate glass is the most suitable glass matrix for vitrification due to its high chemical durability, high waste-loading capacity, and good radiation resistance. Mo is a fission product contained in liquid waste generated in the process of reprocessing spent nuclear fuel and exists in the form of MoO4 2- in the glass. MoO4 2- forms a depolymerization region without directly connecting with the glass network former. When the concentration of Mo increases in the depolymerization region, it combines with nearby alkali or alkaline earth cations to form a crystalline molybdate phase. Phase separation and crystallization in the glass can degrade the performance of the material because it changes the physical and chemical properties of the glass. In particular, since alkali molybdate has high water solubility when it forms crystals containing radioactive elements such as Cs, there is a risk of leakage of radionuclides by groundwater during deep underground disposal. Therefore, in this study, the most stable glass-ceramic composition was developed using various alkali elements, and the difference in phase separation and crystallization behavior in glass and the stability of the solidified body were analyzed by structural analysis of the glass network and alkali molybdate. The cause of the difference in crystallization of alkali molybdate according to the type of alkali cation is structurally analyzed, and using this, research is conducted to increase the Mo content in the glass without crystallization.
As temporary storage facilities for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) are becoming saturated, there is a growing interest in finding solutions for treating SNF, which is recognized as an urgent task. Although direct disposal is a common method for handling SNF, it results in the entire fuel assembly being classified as high-level waste, which increases the burden of disposal. Therefore, it is necessary to develop SNF treatment technologies that can minimize the disposal burden while improving long-term storage safety, and this requires continuous efforts from a national policy perspective. In this context, this study focused on reducing the volume of high-level waste from light water reactor fuel by separating uranium, which represents the majority of SNF. We confirmed the chlorination characteristics of uranium (U), rare earth (RE), and strontium (Sr) oxides with ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) in previous study. Therefore, we prepared U-RE-SrOx simulated fuel by pelletizing each elements which was sintered at high temperature. The sintered fuel was again powdered by heating under air environment. The powdered fuel was reacted with NH4Cl to selectively chlorinate the RE and Sr elements for the separation. We will share and discuss the detailed results of our study.
Combination of liquid-phase exfoliation and hydrothermal method has progressed in recent years mainly on production of 2D materials. In this study, graphene was successfully synthesized via combinatorial of liquid-phase exfoliation and hydrothermal method with the aid of various conductive surfactants perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylate (PTCA), lithium perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylate (LiPTCA) and sodium perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylate (NaPTCA). The effect of the lithium ( Li+) and sodium ( Na+) cations toward the efficiency of the graphene exfoliation process and its electrical properties was thoroughly investigated. Based on the characterization techniques, it is revealed that NaPTCA is the ideal conductive surfactant to exfoliate graphene sheets. X-ray diffraction spectra verified that the Na+ cation certainly can enhance the exfoliation process by expanding the interlayer spacing. The lateral size of the graphene sheets with Na-PTCA surfactant was the smallest (4.17 μm) as observed from SEM micrograph. The maximum concentration of the graphene yield was achieved up to 0.151 mgmL− 1 in NaPTCA surfactant alongside with excellent electrical conductivity of 746.27 Sm− 1 and relevant specific capacitance of 129 Fg− 1.
PURPOSES : In this study, the alkali aggregate reactivity and expansion characteristics of mortar mixed with waste glass (a recycled aggregate) were confirmed to verify the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) stability and review the appropriateness of the alkali aggregate reactivity test method following the replacement of recycled aggregate.
METHODS : The alkali-aggregate reactivity of waste glass aggregates was measured using the chemical and physical methods described in KS F 2545 and ASTM C 1260, respectively. The reactivity was classified by comparing the results. Cement with a high-alkali content was used to simulate an environment that can induce ASR. Non-reactive fine aggregates, waste glass fine aggregates, reactive general aggregates, and Ferronickel slag aggregates were used as control groups.
RESULTS : Waste glass fine aggregates were classified as reactive when applying the chemical method. In the physical method, they were classified as reactive at 100% and latent reactive at 1%, based on the mixing ratio. Additionally, we discovered that the reliability of the chemical method was low since the ASR of the aggregates was classified differently based on the evaluation method, while the results of the chemical and physical test methods were inconsistent.
CONCLUSIONS : To determine the alkali reactivity of recycled aggregates, the complex use of chemical and physical methods and analysis based on the mixing ratio of the reactive aggregates are required. Small amounts of waste glass aggregate replacements affected the ASR. Because ASR reaction products can affect the long-term thermal expansion of the structure, further research is needed to use ASR aggregates in structures.
The Alkali-Metal Thermal to Electric Converter (AMTEC) can be used as a next-generation power generation technology related with a large thermal energy storage. In particular, this technology is expected for the higher efficiency by a cascade power generation with the thermoelectric generator(TEG), and the temperature distribution becomes a very important design parameter in this case. In this study, the temperature distribution of the AMTEC unit was analyzed through CFD analysis, and design points were discussed based on the results.
Tungsten carbide is widely used in carbide tools. However, its production process generates a significant number of end-of-life products and by-products. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient recycling methods and investigate the remanufacturing of tungsten carbide using recycled materials. Herein, we have recovered 99.9% of the tungsten in cemented carbide hard scrap as tungsten oxide via an alkali leaching process. Subsequently, using the recovered tungsten oxide as a starting material, tungsten carbide has been produced by employing a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. SHS is advantageous as it reduces the reaction time and is energy-efficient. Tungsten carbide with a carbon content of 6.18 wt % and a particle size of 116 nm has been successfully synthesized by optimizing the SHS process parameters, pulverization, and mixing. In this study, a series of processes for the highefficiency recycling and quality improvement of tungsten-based materials have been developed.
Biomass porous carbons derived from Laminaria japonica were prepared by KOH and H3PO4 activation methods, respectively. The results indicated that the chemical activation had an apparent effect on the molecular framework and space of materials. To enhance the selective adsorption for organic acids, biomass carbons were modified by dopamine combined with N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. The SEM and BET results illustrated the effect of the chemical activation approach on the morphology and porous texture. The biomass porous carbon using KOH activation method had the highest surface area (up to 1558 m2/ g). Compared with unmodified materials, the modified materials showed higher adsorption capacity for organic acids (27.90 μg/mL for chlorogenic acid and 25.47 μg/mL for caffeic acid). It was suggested that modification of porous carbons might be a viable pathway to increase the specific adsorption affinity and efficiency for organic acids in dried jujube samples.

Zirconia nanoparticles were widely used as filler in order to get high refractive index layer. However, dispersion of nanoparticles is difficult due to their agglomeration in solvent. In this study, the dispersibility of the zirconia suspension is promoted by controlling the steric hindrance and electrostatic interactions through the adsorption of PEI according to alkali treatment time. Also, to induce improved dispersibility on suspension, we changed the dispersion conditions variously and fabricated an ink formulation method for the coating layer. Zirconia suspension was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Zeta potential measurement, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and FT-IR. We were able to confirm that good dispersion of zirconia suspension by alkali treatment and PEI led to high refractive index.
